Seven Questions: Which Round 1 position is most up in the air?

WHICH ROUND 1 POSITION IS MOST UP IN THE AIR?

It would have to be left wing. In my opinion, there are three main contenders — Jordan Rankin, Justin Hunt and Moses Suli. The player who spent the most time in that role during the Club’s trial matches was 18-year-old rookie Suli; however, will Jason Taylor opt for the more experienced Rankin or Hunt to open the 2017 season ahead of the untried teenager?

The main question mark surrounding Wests Tigers is still that of the left wing, but there’s also a few others that exist — particularly that of the other starting prop spot. Last season, it was Sauaso Sue who partnered Aaron Woods up front for most of the season, with Tim Grant also earning a number of starting appearances, but it looks like Sue could shift to the right edge this year, as he did in the trial match against the Cowboys. That would free up Josh Aloiai (who played excellently at prop against the Cowboys) to possibly start, or take either Ava’s or Grant’s prop spot on the bench. I’d lean towards the experience of Grant starting with Woods (almost 300 games combined), but whether that will transpire still remains up in the air.

I'd have to go with hooker, because there's a great battle going on for that spot. Looks like it'll come down to Jacob Liddle to Matt Ballin to see who starts, and then there's the question of whether they'll be right for Round 1 so it might be Matt McIlwrick. They've all looked good at training so there's plenty of options to think through for 2017.

That's a surprisingly good feature. I know it's just Skando and the media blokes, but you'd imagine they have some insight into what's happening.
 
This is a good little initiative from the club. Good stuff wests tigers. 6 sleeps till NRL, 7 sleeps until WT

They are still questions that tow the company line though. You wouldn't expect them to discuss the most important question re defence. I suppose discussing a subject that has the possiblity of failure isn't good PR. Throw in contract questions too.

Just hope Saturday they haven't got to discuss "Who needs to be dropped for Rd 2"
 
I think Reynolds being out is the guarantee that Suli should start. He is not going to get peppered by the very smart kicking game now.
 
I can see the meltdown coming if Rankin is named in front of Suli, being called JT's favourite :blah :blah

If he is, it will only be for one reason, because they won't be ready to blood the kid yet. Simple. I can't believe that even the most passionate JT/Rankin critic could be so delusional to think that they would be keeping a kid they just fought off half a dozen clubs for and paid a million dollars for out of first grade purely because they favour Rankin. If they do, there will be a logical reason behind it.

For me, it has to be Elijah Taylor. While ET certainly didn’t disappoint anyone in 2016, expect the former Panther to go to another level this year with a full pre-season at Wests Tigers under his belt. His combination with halves Mitch Moses and Luke Brooks as a ball-playing lock forward will be key to the Club’s hopes of returning to finals football in 2017.

Last season, David Nofoaluma went from being a good winger to a great winger, scoring a team-high 14 tries and making his international debut at the end of the year as well. He’s an excellent finisher and one of the strongest runners in the competition coming out of his own end — he led the entire NRL in tackle breaks last season — and I’m looking for him to continue that progression again in 2017\. Playing on a dangerous right edge with Mitchell Moses, expect Nofa to find the line time and time again this year and establish himself as one of the top wingers in the game by season’s end. I’d even go as far to say that if the Blues are looking for a winger to replace the injured Josh Mansour this year, they’d do much worse than to look to City representative Nofoaluma.

I reckon Josh Aloiai is really going to improve again this year. Obviously he had an incredible year last year but I think he’s going to be even better again this year and really build on what he’s already done. Especially watching him in the trials, he seems to have continued his 2016 form so I think he’ll be one of our biggest improvers.

I think they will all improve significantly.

I hope that Lawrence gets replaced by Esan Marsters and also i would like to see some of Paseka this year along with Tatola.

If a back goes down i would also like to see some of Leumuelu.

I personally think the biggest improver will either be Aloia, Luke Brooks or MCK

From what I have seen of Marsters - he has a long way to go to come up to Rowdy's standard. let alone replace him.

This game has cruelled many a young player, by playing them in the NRL too quickly.

What is the rush?

There will be no meltdown from me GNR, just mild disappointment and exasperation. I see your point re experience, blah, blah, but the real point is is that, despite his time in first grade, Rankin does not deserve to be picked after his poor form in the trials and several underwhelming performances last year. Suli is bigger, taller, faster and, on form, the better player. Despite the risk of mistakes due to rookie nerves, he still provides better value than Rankin. I defended Rankin last year, especially after a couple of wholehearted efforts early in the season, but after that his regular errors provided an unnecessary handicap to the team. Taylor should try to be more positive this year, avoid playing favorites and pick the best team.

What's the toughest road game on the schedule?

Travelling to GIO Stadium in Round 3 will be a huge test once again for Wests Tigers. While the Club’s three trips to Queensland throughout the year might be the more obvious choices, the Raiders clash is part of a tough opening six rounds that also features clashes against 2016 finalists Penrith, Melbourne and the Cowboys. Wests Tigers will be out for revenge from 2016, with this the only time the two sides will face each other in the regular season.

They broke the hoodoo last year at Suncorp Stadium, but any time you have to face the Broncos at home, it’s not an easy task. That’s what awaits Wests Tigers this year just before the Club’s first bye round, and this time, the game will feature both sets of Origin players, who were missing in the 19-18 upset win last year. Heading into the bye makes it a four-point game for Wests Tigers; it just doesn’t make it an easy one to win.

Canberra away, definitely. They’re massive, massive boys down there. There’s no way around it, but it’s going to be a tough one. Three games in to the year, taking the bus down — it’s all a tough week but it can be a really enjoyable one too if you overcome that and get the win. We had a good result back there in 2015, last year not so much, but for me personally, it was always a really tough trip to make. It’s a great challenge for the boys, that’s for sure!
