Wests Tigers call time on Tim Sheens after horror season

ByMichael Chammas and Adam Pengilly

August 16, 2023 — 9.11am

The Wests Tigers are set to drop a bombshell barely one season into the club’s five-year plan, calling time on Tim Sheens’ tenure as head coach.

The Tigers have responded to concerns raised by key stakeholders within the club and the sport by significantly reducing the role of the 2005 premiership-winning coach.

It is expected Sheens won’t coach next year, nor will he return to the general manager role which he assumed before taking on the job as Michael Maguire’s successor this year.

Sheens has given the club his blessing for Benji Marshall to take over as coach but had expectations that he would return to his administration role.

The club is expected to keep him around in an ambassador and mentoring role if he wants to continue.

Sheens was meant to be head coach for two years and help transition Marshall into a top-line coach in time for him to take complete control of the team in 2025.

Sheens’ power at the club has been diluted significantly over the course of the year with one club insider telling this masthead that Sheens had very little input for the club’s last game against the Warriors in New Zealand.

This masthead has been told that Sheens hasn’t been seen at the club’s Concord headquarters for the past couple of days. Club powerbrokers have held a series of meetings over the past 48 hours to reach the decision.

Marshall will now have complete control of the team and is contracted until the end of 2027.
This masthead has contacted Sheens and the Tigers for comment.
More to come.

This is a good move but an even better move would be to remove Lee Pascoe and the entire board of idiots we have as well as Sheens because they are the cretins who decided to appoint him to the coaching position,a position he was at least a decade out of touch with.
I wonder if Sheens will sue the club again like he did last time

wow. I guess this is basically a delayed reaction to the Sheens-Marshall-Fulton power struggle that was playing out on an almost hourly basis a month ago.

the lack of experience in the football department is extremely concerning. we need a Director of Football with proven success if Sheens won't be around and another experienced assistant. without them we will be anchored to the bottom of the ladder for far longer than anticipated.

Fascinating. I suppose some on here will be happy.

You can't fault Pascoe, Lee and the board for not acting.

Should we be sad? Perhaps not by the sacking but putting him there in the first place..

The man was cooked 10 years ago the first time they let him go… baffling call to recycle him … another terrible decision in the clubs history …

Would love to see Benji succeed … but a coach with 12 months experience at any level, coaching a team with 7 wins in their last 50 games … you wouldnt put your at house on it…

Would rather moves like this are made in the off season. What is gained by doing it now? Unless it's to get the bad press out of the way early? New coach already in place, finals out of reach, not sure of the need to rush.

I’m kind of Surprised that this took so long.
He never really got the team going forward.
Totally unexplainable player retention recruitment and team selection decisions.
Hope that sticking with Benji strategy moves us forward.
Wait and see …… maybe Lady Luck will smile on us for a change.

Yeah - not to derail the off-season. Tigers will start training again in November and you might as well remove the coach whilst you collect the wooden spoon, get it all done at once.

5 Year plan?? More like 5 months
its a five year plan - we just keep hitting the reset button......
Kudos to Lee/Pascoe for pulling the pin on this failure. BUT lets also remove those that put this plan into place..... Oh wait that was Lee/Pascoe.....

I can hear Anasta/Pooper creaming themselves at the opportunity this is going to give them to sink the boot in

Should we be sad?

I don't think so. Firstly it's just your footy team and I'm as much a nut as anyone.

In relation to this issue no. We've been terrible. I don't care what player or coach or administrator leaves because we are terrible and changes are required.

I don't think Sheens was that bad but he has been poor for years and this season the coaching staff have made several bad decisions as well as hardly ever getting the team to perform on game day.

As for Benji I'm going to be positive but let's wait and see. My impression is that Benji is really keen to win and sometimes that will can help turn things around. I'm hopeful he won't be conservative and we need some spark.

Not even being kept as football department manager, just hope it was results based and not because he was being white anted or from player managers pressuring the club. Geez our club are just like prostitutes. We screw everything we touch.

Sheens has had a stronger squad on paper then last year but the team has gone backwards results wise…

His preseason training program, roster management and weekly selections have all played a big part in this.

Its a results orientated business… he promised a lot before the season kicked off and hasn’t delivered…

Next!

I’m really worried by our coaching. We need another very experienced assistant. You would think it would make it hard to recruit with such novice coaches (Furner excepted).
