Sheens poised to hand ageing Anasta challenge and a half Re

TIM SHEENS is set to make one of the biggest gambles of his coaching career next season by handing Braith Anasta the No.7 jersey.
The Herald has been told Sheens plans to shift Benji Marshall back to his customary five-eighth role, with Roosters recruit Anasta to partner him at halfback.
The Wests Tigers have been the biggest flops of this season, failing to make the play-offs after being premiership favourites at the start of the year. One of the biggest problems was the club's inability to settle on a ''spine'' - the halfback, five-eighth, fullback and hooker - and the halves in particular. All up, the Tigers used nine halves combinations, rotating Marshall, Tim Moltzen, Jacob Miller, Tom Humble, Chris Lawrence, Blake Ayshford, Curtis Sironen, Robbie Farah and Liam Fulton through the six and seven spots.

Benji Marshall will go back to five-eighth.
Anasta has played 251 games in an illustrious career for Canterbury and the Sydney Roosters. However, he has started in the No.7 jersey only once, for the Roosters against Manly in round 17 in 2007.

The former NSW and Australian representative has played 214 games at pivot, one at fullback, five from the bench and the rest at either lock or in the second row. But at the age of 30, he will be asked to take on a new position at a new club.
''That's where Sheens wants to play him; it means Benji goes back to five-eighth,'' a source said.
The experiment, likely to be road-tested in next year's trial matches, will have ramifications for many at the club. Sironen showed promise in his five matches alongside Marshall in the halves, but injury prematurely ended the year of the schoolboys superstar. The latest development could push him into the back row.
Sheens, the Kangaroos coach, is one of league's great innovators, and has held the clipboard for more games than anyone else in NRL history. But the four-time premiership-winning coach's sides have made the finals only three times in the past 15 years. The lean trot has put Sheens under pressure to keep his job, and finding a long-term replacement for Robert Lui remains one of the big challenges.
''If they decide to move me on, then they'll move me on,'' Sheens said after a loss to Melbourne on Saturday night officially killed off the Tigers' play-off hopes. ''That is something out of my control.''

Oh well. Looks like another 2 seasons of a bloke who has never played halfback playing there for Wests Tigers. 3 years of Johny Cronk was a spectacular success. This seasons 10 combinations were great. Next year an ageing Anasta. Expect this to be Johny Cronk mark 2\. Anasta will be off the pace, but Sheens won't budge him for 2 long seasons. I liked Anasta as a footballer, however i genuinely think he is past it and will be a poor signing. Happy to be proved wrong, but worried he will flop.

Eddie I respect your opinion , but if you continue to play him as a backrower at his age he will start to get a lot of niggly injuries and he becomes a worthless buy

Benji is best at 6 , but you don't want him making the calls from 6

Realistically with who we have for 2013 that you can play at 7 who will complement Farah and Marshall Anasta is the best option

The one bloke I would like to see get a run at 7 probably won't

Chisholm Hopefully Sheens does give him the opportunity in the trials to put his case forward

I just can't remember Anasta having 1 good game the past 2 years. How many games has be affected the past 2 years? I just think he is running on old legs. Maybe with Farah and Marshall either side it can work. However you still have to worry about a bloke who has never played halfback in his life, past 30 years old, coming off 2 poor seasons, joining a new club.

I totally agree , but he is here now and we have to use him in the best way that will compliment the team

No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No!!!!

Braith isn't even here yet and Sheens is already turning him into a different player??? So basically it's either Benji at 7 was a massive failure or Tim Sheens is just bored in the job and looking for ways to make life fun??

We've got nothing to lose. I can't wait to see Anasta in Wests Tigers colors in 2013\. Think what you like but he's my marquee signing, & with his experience in the halves it will be only the 2nd time in Benji's career that he has a partner that he can't really bully & dominate. The last time we were in this position we won the comp. It's not about Anasta it's about Benji finding his mojo. Who else better than Anasta to illuminate Benji once again. Give Sheens a 6 month stay of execution. I for one in the off season will be licking my lips in anticipation of a semi final season in 2013\. If this story is true then I stand by Tim Sheens. Enjoy the summer.

Anasta doesn't have to be the fastest 1/2 in the game but what this guy brings is stability and expieriance in a major way just what the doctor ordered for this team .Benji can now look after his own game ,doesn't have to kick as much ,another field goal option, can defend, has a passing game and kick goals.Yes might be a bit slower but the total package out weighs this IMO.

Agree with the populous. Stability in the spine is all I ask out of 2013 and if this grants us that opportunity, then tally ho!!!

I reckon its a great idea.

no-one mocked Kimmorley at Halfback really ever, and Noddy was one of the Slowest players going around the park.

Anasta has the added bonus of being able to tackle as well.

Lets see how it plays out before we death ride it.

He can pass=yes; can he kick = yes, one of the longest kicks in the game; will he let Benji overrule him = no….this could work out...I'm just happy that Benji will revert back to #6...two failed seasons at #7 proves Benji is not a halfback.

Out of our roster, this IMO is the best option for our halves.
Im glad Sheens wants to play Benji back at 5/8\. And Anasta being older and more experienced could have a positive affect on Benji.
It's still not a long term option which is what we have been dying for a while now.

Roosters fans will be laughing at us, they've been wanting him OUT of the halves.

Not liking the idea at all, but looks like we'll be stuck with it, unless there's a coaching change.

Hopefully Anasta will bring some maturity to the club. Everything seemed rushed in most of the games this year, and Benji was the worst culprit for this.

I can't really see much changing next year. I hope I am wrong, but the staleness may continue!

we have a young gun five eight in sirro who now loses his position to accomodate benji.
the backline will continue to be half assed with guys like ayshford who are solid, but not attacking weapons.
another failed seaosn ahead of us.

There is no doubt moving Benji back to where he should be is a good move however playing an aging Anasta at half is one of the craziest ideas i have ever heard,he is not a half back but our esteemed coach has decided he is (Morris revisited).2012 will probably be considered a good year by when compared to what 2013 is shaping up as

*Having a Sheens moment*

Cooking.

Needs milk to complete this recipe….....travels to supermarket.

My only hope it's not sheens call, but if it is god forbid,we know Anasta will be picked every week and he is to old and his work rate as far to low for the back row and we know Benji is better suited at no6 so it only leaves no7 for Anasta. But Sheens being Sheens it will be a hybrid style no7 where he will play a bit of 6 a bit of 7 a bit of 9 and a bit of everything else!!!!!!

If it means Benji at 6,then it will do me,Anasta can defend and has a decent kicking game.

Well what else is he to do …. He was banking on Robbie Lui to be there this year and the next..... I really believe that our season would have been a lot different if he was still at the club even with all the injuries that have copped his season...
