TIM Sheens has quit as Wests Tigers coach following a revolt from his players.

He reached a settlement with the club yesterday to walk away after 10 years at the helm.

Sheens told Tigers players and officials yesterday afternoon he was no longer going to be involved at the club, and speculation immediately turned to him possibly switching to the New Zealand Warriors.

It is understood Sheens reached a compromise payout agreement regarding the final two years of his contract.

A Tigers board meeting last night to decide Sheens' future was cancelled and the club is believed to be holding off on a formal announcement to allow Sheens to sort out a deal with the Warriors.

Under the terms of Sheens' contract, he was to be paid the full amount of his $450,000-a-year deal if he was sacked. But the club baulked at a parting payment of $900,000.

While Sheens told several players and officials of the news yesterday, it's understood that he chose not to tell club captain Robbie Farah and star Benji Marshall.

Sheens is also thought to have told his longtime colleague Brian Hyder that the football manager too won't be at the Tigers next season.

In recent days the pressure to oust Sheens became apparent as leading players openly expressed displeasure over the departures of club favourites Beau Ryan and Chris Heighington to the Sharks.

Sheens and the Tigers came to an agreement over the payout terms, while a new deal with New Zealand would likely cover the shortfall if it eventuated.

Sheens is keen to retain the Kangaroos job, presenting the curious situation where he could have to coach against a Kiwi side packed with his Warriors players should he take the Auckland job.

Candidates for the Tigers job include Melbourne assistant coach Kevin Walters and Manly and NSW assistant coach Matt Parish.

Sheens, who guided the joint-venture club to the 2005 premiership, is understood to have spoken to Warriors executives yesterday about a possible deal.

Warriors chairman Bill Wavish is expected to fly to London within days to discuss candidates for the coaching gig with club owners Eric Watson and Owen Glenn.

While the Tigers failed to make the top eight this year, the real problems began when Ryan and Heighington confirmed last week they were defecting to Cronulla.

Marshall was furious, particularly as he has a close relationship with both players.

He made his feelings known in an explosive confrontation with club chief executive Stephen Humphreys.

With popular prop Bryce Gibbs having departed last year, also to the Sharks, some of the remaining players felt the club was being ripped apart because of its inability to retain long-serving stars.

Well there you go. What have we achieved: we lose the coach who has run out of ideas, a 27 year old winger (average fill in full back and centre) and a lock who has seen better days. Is that such a bad thing ? I think not. All this hoopla about 2 players who, just because they are popular with other players, have created such division by going over to another club because their current club knew their true dollar value and wasn't prepared to pay them what they thought they were worth. Well done Tigers. All I ask now is a regular half back and full back, Marshall to 5/8, Sironen as a ball playing, angle running lock and Anasta to back row and to kick.

So Sheens would have survived had he not moved Heighington and Ryan on …
Forget the Board, forget the CEO, forget the major sponsors, forget the head coach,
Apparently, it's the players who are running the club.

Mmmm... the inverse pyramid model

Yep, he baulked when Robbie and Benji complained about Heino and Ryan being shopped to Penrith in 2011, and now has paid for it. I wonder what would have happened if he had stood his ground 12 months ago.

Thank god it's over and we don't have the entire league watching us air our dirty laundry. we need to ensure that Robbie gets the contract he deserves and hope that the coach fits a 12 year old club that has good systems in place but needs success with the remaining (talented) roster in place. We cannot afford to train another coach (ie terry lamb) and that is my only fear with parish and co. Give me Anderson, Murray and off course bellamy any day.

I was silly enough to hope that it was because of our awful season where he consistently played people out of position and always picked his favourites.
We may have got the right result but it appears to be for all the wrong reasons :crazy

I feel like a weight has been lifted off the clubs shoulders, interesting days ahead - a fresh start, new energy, ideas and enthusiasm.

If I'm feeling it surely the players will too and with some great young talent waiting to be given a go exciting times are ahead!

Cleanout? Get Brian Smith on a two year deal and then sack him for another full time coach. Seems to have worked at all the other teams he has coached.

I understand that Nathan Brown will be coaching St Helens next year so we can thankfully remove him from the equation, I like the idea of Danial Anderson, he's been out of the loop for 2 years but has been working in the media and has an impressive ESL & NRL coaching record.
Brian Smith could possibly cause the club to implode in it's current state while I agree that a rookie coach may not be the answer, over at Manly Parish is being used as an excuse for Manly not defending their premiership.

It will be Kevin Walters or Matt Parish for sure. I Love what Sheens did for our club and if you remember we were an absolute basket case when he arrived. he helped deliver us a premiership in 05 and i for 1 am grateful. Having said that i do think it was time for a change as it just looked stale this year and a new young coach with some new ideas might just be the tinic we need.

Nothing but respect for all that he took our club to.

Time to move on had been reached and I think once this decision is formailsed all Wests Tigers fans will give him nothing but the respect he has earned for his tenure and also for moving on before it became way too late.

All of these articles have made me question the role of Benji at the club. His sooking and reported tantrums at the CEO are nothing short of pathetic from the highest paid player at the club. If we could negotiate Thurston or another half to the club I would be willing to cut the guy loose if he wants to keep going.

Don't expect the new coach to be named in a hurry

With the Warriors position still be filled (I'm assuming it hasn't for the time being)

Kevie still involved with the Storm (if he is a major player)

Who we get will depend on whether Sheens gets the Warriors gig

If he does we will have a lot more money available

But my options for each situation in order

Senior coach Folkes and Anderson

Junior coach Dymock and Parish

I am sure the club will want the new coach named in a hurry to start preparations for the off season. The longer we go without one the worse stead we'll be in come 2013\. I wouldn't be surprised if there is already a verbal agreement with someone pending the announcement of Sheens quitting.

He stayed about 5 years too long but yes he will probably go down as our greatest ever coach for the next hundred years.

I would hope not! If in 100 years from now a guy who guided the club to the finals three times in ten years is considered its greatest coach, then there are certainly some dark times ahead of us.

Well said Smeg. Sheens deserves respect and Benji deserves none.

I wish it was true that all fans will give him respect. Unfortunately, I think too many fans have an undeservedly jaundiced view of a man who took on a tough job. We are the only club in the NRL that has factions who do not want the club to succeed. The very same factions held back one side of the JV for 30 years. The fact that Sheens achieved what he did in such a poisoned environment is admirable.
