UNDER-PRESSURE Wests Tigers chief executive Steve Humphreys conceded Tim Sheens would not be offered a new role that involved working alongside disgruntled players.

Sheens fell out with key players, including Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah, over the past three weeks. Those same senior players were involved in the club's end-of-season review.

There have been suggestions Sheens may be offered a coaching director's role - but that would appear highly unlikely.

"There are lots of roles at our club that may or may not involve being around the NRL squad," Humphreys said.

Pressed on whether the players could still work under Sheens, Humphreys said: "I have not said that. What I would say is that all of us at the Wests Tigers, including the players and the senior players, have nothing but the highest regard for Tim."

Buzz: The reality is Sheens had to go
The Tigers have formed a sub-committee to appoint a new coach. The leading candidates are Kevin Walters, Matt Parish, Daniel Anderson and Nathan Brown.

"We would not stand in Kevin's way if he had the chance to be head coach of an NRL team," Storm football operations manager Frank Ponissi said.

"He'd be a fantastic head coach and his two years under Craig (Bellamy) have made him even better."

Asked whether Sheens was offered another position to prevent a hefty payout, Tigers chairman David Trodden said: "I reckon that's really disrespectful to Tim and disrespectful for the people at this club who hold him in such high regard."

Trodden yesterday urged Sheens to remain at the club in some capacity.

"We are very keen for Tim to continue at our club in a senior role as part of our restructure," Trodden said.

"He has been offered a position. To be fair to Tim, this has all happened quite suddenly. He will need to consider his position over the coming period of time.

"I think it's fair to say that Tim is disappointed that he won't be coaching the NRL team next year. That's to be expected."

Wests Tigers are in crisis at the moment amid suggestions Marshall has too much say, star players are leaving and the club is without a coach six weeks before pre-season training. There is even angst on the board between Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers directors.

Humphreys said the Sheens decision came after his club conducted a "thorough review" after a "disappointing" season.

Sheens still had two years remaining on his contract.

Asked was Sheens sacked or did he quit, Trodden said: "Neither. It was a restructure of our football operations as a result of our review process."

Reminded it had to be either one or the other, Trodden said: "No."

WESTS Tigers have officially opened negotiations to retain star hooker Robbie Farah.

Farah comes off contract after next season and there is speculation he will be chased heavily by Ricky Stuart's Parramatta.

Sacked coach Tim Sheens and Farah fell out over the past three weeks.

In an email to club members yesterday detailing Sheens' departure, chief executive Steve Humphreys also said: "Our captain Robbie Farah is off-contract at the end of next year and you will be pleased to know that the club has already commenced discussions with him about a new deal.''

Like i said yesterday… CEO's words were basically sugar coating Sheens being sacked.

Not sure why we keep posting the press reports when it is clear that not one of them has been accurate to date.

I thought it was poor form for the Tele to come out yesterday and say Sheens quit, and then print a "we told you so" after the press conference which confirmed that he had not quit and had been offered a new position.

The press can write whatever they like and they are not accountable.

Am I missing something? Where does it suggest sheens is going to reject it?

One thing is for sure - Sheens won't be going anywhere without getting his cash monies.

So either he signs elsewhere, or he gets his $$$.

All power to him I say.

I don't begrudge him his money either. They signed him in good faith. He should get what's owing to him.

Could they work out a payment plan?

Lol tigers are in crisis because Marshall has too much say? I'll tell u all this, Marshall wasn't heading the sack sheens movement, he was part of it but it was farah mainly. It was a him or me threat from farah. Marshall will stay at tigers regardless, farah wanted sheens gone and when the club captain speaks the board listen

I wish he would just walk,he has brought this mess on himself,he picked the players out of position,he selected non performing players,he finally gets called to task after 10 years and he don't like it,stiff you know what, most coaches are accountable every year, get use to it Tim,your free ride is over.
Thanks SG that only makes the argument stronger,Farah is a must,Sheens promised Farah a proper halfback, and that Robbie would never play half again,he failed on both fronts,I don't feel one bit sorry for him.

Herald is reporting the Wests Group prefers Peter Gentle and Jason Taylor:

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/sheens-tipped-for-new-role-20120925-26jh0.html

_A sub-committee has been formed to find a new coach and they have a long list of potential candidates to consider but former assistant Peter Gentle told the Herald last night that he would not be returning from Super League after signing a new contract with Hull FC.\
\
Gentle had been a preferred choice among some on the Western Suburbs side of the joint venture, along with Sydney Roosters under-20s coach and former South Sydney mentor Jason Taylor - a Magpies junior._

That article also takes the angle Sheens will take the role….

Interesting to read that Dan Anderson is one of the frontrunners for the Warriors job. Can't think of many coaches who've come and gone and then come again as head coach of a first grade side.
I like Anderson, he's got a good record, seems very affable and would love to see him at the Tigers … Only worry is, I don't understand why he keeps getting sacked ( or my memory is shot). Parramatta fell flat after their grand final year, that I remember but what happened to him in NZ ? He got them to the grand final too, but why'd he leave ?

I wouldn't mind Sheens in a similar role to Gus at Penrith. It's clear that Sheens has lost his touch when it comes to the hands on coaching, but his record in development and youth recruitment is outstanding. Players like Benji, Robbie, Lawrence, Woods, Koroibete and Sironen all came through a Sheens led Tigers youth system.

I think that would be a suitable role for Sheens.

I'd rather a younger bloke the kids could relate to, someone a bit more up to speed with how the games played these day as opposed to a bloke who buggers the 6 & 7 for moonths because a fullback gets injured.

KEEP HIM AWAY FROM OUR KIDS AT ALL COSTS!

Tigers at loss to find useful role for non-coach Sheens

TIM SHEENS will be back in action as a coach today - but not for Wests Tigers. He will be at Redfern Oval in his other capacity, as Australian coach, to put the Sydney and Newcastle-based members of the Kangaroos squad through their paces.

The club coaching future for the four-time premiership-winning mentor remains unclear after the Tigers management announced at a news conference on Tuesday that he would no longer be the coach.

Sheens had two years left to run on his contract but the club felt that after a poor season this year in which the Tigers missed the finals after starting the year as competition favourites they had to change tack.

Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys and chairman Dave Trodden said Sheens had been offered another role at the club but they were not able to define that position.

''There are lots of roles at our club that may or may not involve being around the NRL squad,'' Humphreys said. Trodden added: ''We are very keen for Tim to continue at our club in a senior role as part of our restructure. He has been offered a position. To be fair to Tim, this has all happened quite suddenly. He will need to consider his position over the coming period of time.''

Sheens is on a deal worth $450,000 a season, and the club is loath to pay him out that sort of amount. The club may say it wants him to continue but it appears they are trying to either squeeze him out by having him work in a role he doesn't want or by buying time while they hope another club comes along to pick him up. But Sheens clearly isn't going anywhere at this stage.

The Warriors are still to make a decision on a coach for next year, to replace Brian McClennan who was sacked, but indications are that Sheens isn't in the frame for that job.

A source close to Sheens said yesterday the 61-year-old remained very keen to continue his coaching career. He still has the Australian job, and the Aussies will play an end-of-season Test against New Zealand in Townsville on October 13, but he has not lost the desire for coaching at club level and was ready to continue doing so at the Tigers until the management removed him.

Neither Humphreys nor Trodden returned the Herald's phone calls yesterday but indications are that they are still in the early days of going through the process to find a coach for next year.

After a decade of Sheens being in charge, and with the club in disarray because of recent poor results and the exit of several players, it is an important decision that they won't want to rush.
