Should Field Goals be scrapped from the NRL

Today's match highlighted how difficult, given the framework of the current rules, it is for a referee to make a correct decision with regards to an attempted tackle on a player attempting a field goal. If you interpret today's decision as the correct one then there is very little reason for opposing teams to suppress an attempt at field goal. In all cases field goal attempts are taken very close to or in front of the posts so a penalty at that point almost guarantees two points.

There have been calls to remove golden point and/or removing field goals from golden point. Rugby League is about scoring tries Maybe the NRL should remove field goals altogether.

pardon the pun, but this seems a knee jerk reaction to me. field goals are exciting at the end of a game and also useful as a tactic to just break away from that 6 point gap that can be closed by a converted try.
also, we currently have like the best field goal kicker in the history of the world ever….

Yes Turnstyle I will have to agree with you. Interesting to note however that field goals were originally worth two points when a try was only worth three points. In the late sixties however many matches were being decided by the great number of two point field goals being kicked during a match and the League governing body decided to reduce the worth of a field goal to only one point.

I reckon the players could sort it out better themselves

Funny you mentioned that Happy. I thought Graham was going to take a bite out of the referee's ear.

Funny you should say that … Before my young blokes footy training starts all the boys (26 of them) play a game across the width of the field and I can't believe how smooth and fair it goes !

You don't actually have to dive to make a charge down… The majority of players are able to do it without diving.. Keith did it a few weeks ago without diving!!

If a player dives at a field goal attempt they run the risk of giving away a penalty. It's exactly the same as attempting to catch a bomb in the air when an opponent is doing the same. Most times both players are going for the ball but a penalty is awarded against the attacking team (if the defence catches it or drops it) because contact is made with the man in the air with the ball... It's the risk you take if you attempt such a play... Both plays can yield good results if executed perfectly, but if not they can be costly...

By awarding penalties like they did this afternoon it will prevent other players doing the same...
I'm not a fan of golden point personally, golden try would be a good idea for mine, but the field goal is still an important part if the game..

no, but it also depends how far you are from the kicker. as i said in the other thread: graham was _basically_ doing the right thing to smother - he just executed it terribly.

Keep field goals but get rid of the golden point BS. For over one hundred years there was nothing wrong with a draw, so why stuff something up that wasn't broke?

Keep the field goal but make golden POINT golden point not Points. At the end of 80 each team gets a point who ever wins extra time gets another point.

I agree, the only reason golden point is there, is because of betting on games. :smiling_imp:
get rid of it once and for all. :deadhorse:

Agreed.

It needs to go to golden try. Or even just a 4 point margin so you could still lose if you give away repeated penalties.
