Yesterday my son's school side played a semi final in the local school comp (They won  )

We knew the headmaster who is the coach wouldn't be there , but the school didn't send a replacement

We had no ball to practice with , no kicking tee and didn't even know what field the game was on

Two parents had to hurriedly start coaching , fortunately the club coach was there to take over I would of done it but one of the kids we were taking to the game forgot his headgear and mouthguard so I was racing around getting that

My kids go to a catholic school , should I complain ??

Given the amount of funding private schools get you probably should.

Got enough money for the Pope to hold a gold cross, not enough for a Catholic school to fund a sports team.

We had almost the exact same thing happen last week , all the schools had a sports carnival which you could choose between touch , football and netball

They had three teams girls ,boys and mixed which was chosen randomly and my young un was in the mixed side

Yet again all three sides are playing at the same time and the parents end of organizing the mixed team ,subs and we weren't even told or asked

Happy, you should write a letter to the school saying how unorganised the sports days are, there is no excuse for non attendance of somebody from the school on these days…thats what rostering is all about .....cheers mate good luck..

they dont get that much, dunno what youre talking about. it varies obviously, some will have 20-30k fees. some with have a few thousand dollar fees.

and no, i didnt go to a catholic school

I would also put something in writing, Especially if they are representing the school and in uniform.

You are right to expect more.

Duty of care and supervision are also vital in this day and age.

And yet they generally have better quality equipment and the like than most public schools.

In my area I live in, there's heaps of Christian and Catholic schools as well as public schools, guess which ones are always doing renovations and expanding?

As a school teacher myself - a PE teacher - I would strongly urge you and all the other parents of the teams that were effected to write letters. It is completely unacceptable to not have a teacher there if it is a school activity. There is a duty of care that has been ignored more than once by the sounds of it.

If anything had of happened to any of the students this would turn into a HUGE legal issue for the school. As it is if it were reported it could still well be a big issue for the school. The severity depends on a number of factors - if parents were told there wouldn't be supervision (sounds like a no), if students made their own way to and from the game, if the game was played at another school (therefore more teachers and greater supervision ratio), if the other school had been informed etc etc

As for the money comment that was made earlier. It is true that some private schools can expect payment if only a few grand to thirty grand per student, but they still receive a huge amount of money from the government also… They have the money to be paying for a casual if the normal coach could not make it.

Once could be a slip up, a very bad slip up! But for it to occur more than once recently is a worrying sign. Short cuts are being taken somewhere in staffing and that truly isn't acceptable....

Your school needs to be informed by writing.... Good luck!

maybe they get money from the church or alumni?

like i said it does vary a lot, but those schools aren't exactly rich private schools, although they are usually better of than public schools because of those fees the parents pay.

Catholic schools have been the mainstay of rugby league in Australia.

That was my point from the outset. They have public funding and they additionally draw income from fees. They are certainly in a much better position to equip sports teams than most public schools are.

Shane Richardson is on around 750K a year lied about what happened in the US …the NRL are top heavy with Merc and Bemmer drivers the Macqauire bank of the sporting world so are you surprised there is no money for the grass roots organisations. They want to make the SFS the new stadium for the NRL so there money mates do not have far to drive to to eat there supplied caviar and champers ,do not worry that the biggest stadium is in the heart of working class suburbia . The current NRL leadership are trashing our great game it is the peoples game not the NOBS game.So it is with no surprise to me that there are no footballs or anything else supplied. The revolution is coming the attendances are down and the guillotines are being designed Power to the people !

yea just the way you phrased it irked me a bit. they're not crazy rich or anything like elite private schools, but SOME have a bit more money. like around 10k per student for a gvmt school versus 13-18k for catholic.

no worries, all good

Catholic schools do not get as much government money as government schools (qualified by what government is in power by the way). They do get government funding + school fees they charge + the building levy + funding from The Catholic Works Fund collected by the Parish ( all of that is private funding and not a govt. handout).

So yes Happy, they should have equipment and a teacher to oversee, along with a few volunteers (always need volunteers).

You should definitely write to the school and cc your local Bishop or Archbishop.

Stir them up Mate!
