Should players have named jerseys and numbers

Was wondering what fans thoughts on having players with their names and numbers on the back of their jersey

The general plan would be that you would submit your playing list and each player would be given a number

I have a reasoning behind this and it is something clubs could use in retaining their superstars

The jerseys sales could be used in paying for players (outside of the cap ) and it could be unlimited

I'll give an example of what I mean

So Robbie Farah agrees to a contract with the Tigers , and part of his contract is that he gets $5 for every jersey sold with his name and number on it

So we the fans pay for the extra $5 dollars for his jersey and therefore help keep our players

If they went stupid and asked for $ 20 you wouldn't pay for it as it was overpriced and you'd get another player

Something outside of the box , was wondering what others thoughts are

If this was Tim Sheens' team, then I'd say NO, because some blokes end up with 7 different numbers on their backs by year's end.

Under Potter - MAYBE. I for one don't want numbers or names on my back, I prefer to be myself in a Tigers jersey, not emulating a player. Kids would go for it though.

I remember back in the 80s seeing heaps of people with State of Origin jerseys, with their favourite player's name and number. Eg Elias or Kenny.

I'd rather see my favourite player's name on the back than some dodgy sponsor sticker.

100%

Would love a Simona #5 or something.
Would be great. Most sports ( America at least ) do it.

Make sense if each player was issued a number at the start of a season… But week by week your number could change... Don't see the point

That was what I wanted , your entire squad would be numbered at the start of the season and you would remain in that jersey for the entire season

With regards to the NRL and previous incarnations, for the last 60 odd years the Numbers 1 through to 13 have signified a certain position, from the 1989 season the NSWRL adopted the International numbering system and I can't recall anyone having trouble to adjusting to that.
The whole idea of having a player being given a designated number for the whole season goes back to the dark old days of Super League and the notion of having the players name on the back originated when the architects of everything wrong with the game today the Melbourne Storm.
This idea does have some merits as it caters for non Rugby League types as in AFL, they seem to issue the player number randomly and if we have to enter other markets then you need the players name on the back of the jumper to identify them, I recall that when the Aussie cricket side adopted individual numbering there was no rhyme or reason for doing so, just a random number, so no, let tradition prevail!.

hehe… that took me back. many moons ago I worked with Siro Snr for a short time at a company who was fixing the issues Bulldogs were having with their numbers (superleague) not being able to be seen on television or something of the likes... on friday arvo all the factory staff would line up down a shelving aisle and he would run at us all, like a pump up before the weekend games, lol, Im laughing writing this

that was pretty slack… i was reading the thread Happy and it is an interesting idea, not sure how I feel about it to be honest. I can see the idea ruffling a few feathers, and it developing its own issues, for example if managers caught on to the possibility of a big signing at a new club selling bucketloads of merch it could almost work against keeping marquee players as first intended, or what if stores only want to stock certain players... restriction of trade sort of crap...

not knocking, it is honestly an interesting idea...
