Should the shoulder charge be banned?

it is a doubled edged sword situation.

let shoulder charge stay in game, and serious damage to a player could happen.
can you imagine the massive out cry from all and sundry.
then there is scenario of compensation, for long term pain/suffering.

ban it from 2013, and a part of history is gone.

personally would not be suprised if from pre-season of season 2013 it is banned.

why do you think they got rid of the spear tackle ?

players now get penalised for lifting above the horizontal
the chicken wing, grapple tackles are treated harshly.

_**A deterrent for this could be:**_

if you do a shoulder charge that goes wrong, and the player you hit goes off for remainder of game then so should you.

**Regardless If you get suspended, or not the following would occur:**
1\. You cannot play unitl the person you hit with shoulder charge is able to play.
so if he misses 2 weeks you are out for mimimum of two weeks.

2\. Once, the injured player resumes playing, _**and you have been suspended**_, your suspension period starts from that game. You will be suspended for a long time. So if he misses 2 or 3 week, then be prepared not to play for a while. eg. if injured players missses 2 week and you get suspended for 3 you are out for a total of 5 weeks.

No keep it in the game but if some one chooses to use it and if it goes wrong they should expect a ban

Totally ridiculous over reaction to one incident in a game thats over 100 years old….

The fact this topics even being discussed...... seriously soft, leave it for union

No the shoulder charge should not be banned. It is a momentum changing play if done correctly and the NRL would suffer if it were to banned.

I am one of the minority who are happy with the stance the NRL is taking in regards to careless tackles resulting in contact with the head. I am of the opinion that the shoulder charge is a low percentage play that should be applauded when it comes off, and penalised if it doesn't.

I have issue with the consistency of the judiciary when it comes to suspensions. Frank Pritchard has been lucky, but Inglis in my opinion was unlucky to get 3 weeks.

I am the first one out of my seat if a shoulder charge makes contact with the chest - putting the call carrier on his backside. But if you take a blokes block off - whether by accident or not - players need to be penalised. It is dangerous and the defender has the responsibility to avoid high contact.

Unfortunately our game is not our game anymore, little johnnys mummy watches the game from the corperate box and says to exec hubby whos multi national company sponsors the team that little johnny isnt playing this sport with those rough tackles in the game and as simple as that is the NRL wil succumb to the corperate dollar just like they have with all the other rules they have changed over the years.

yes it should be, lets turn nrl into the girls game and lets where helmets…stupid thing to do Shoulder charges is what makes Origin good to watch...

The solution is easy - do what they did with ball-stripping. Limit shoulder charges to one-on-one tackles. It's handy for a fullback to effect a tackle while both taking out the attacker and stating on his feet. If you look at Inglis' tackle, it was made far worse by the presence of another tackler, both lowering the attacker and spinning him over. As it is currently, it is primarily done by secondary tacklers, and amounts to nothing more than a cheap shot.

I think 16 out of 16 club doctors speaks volumes about its unnecessary danger. Let shoulder charges remain for one-on-one tackles and leave the penalties in place for attacking the head.

Exactly.

Go and play touch or soccer if you don't want to be tackled.

If the player chooses to use it, they have a player to be eliminated before the justice and pause.. :righton:

Keep it but if the player connects with the head he should be punished accordingly. It is a low percentage play that can often go wrong. If it goes wrong they should pay the price.

Keeps the game entertaining but if the ban was to go ahead it would cut out a lot of speculation around it.

Either, keep it consistent or get rid of it.

It's the players heads getting soft they're worried about.
Seriously …. if they keep it there should be massive penalties for getting it wrong and taking someones head off.
Once a few guys get 6-8 weeks minimum for getting it wrong you'll see coaches telling their players to forget it.

It's not worth losing a player for 8 odd weeks for a charge gone wrong, especially since most would admit it wasn't their intentions to injure the player.

That's the point - if you want to do it then go ahead… get it wrong and you're gone.
Coaches will soon tell their players to forget it.
Don't tell me Inglis didn't know he was going to hurt Dean Young.
