Showdown between Todd Carney and Benji Marshall shaping as major attraction

IT LOOMS as the best individual match-up of the season - star five-eighths Todd Carney and Benji Marshall locking horns in the first weekend of the final series.

The NRL was granted an early September wish when Carney's Sydney Roosters and Marshall's Wests Tigers were drawn to clash on Saturday night.

The superstars have lit up the competition in the past month but are yet to come head to head this season. Carney was at fullback and then halfback when the Roosters met the Tigers during the season.

Legendary No. 6 Brad Fittler labelled the pair "the best two players to watch at the moment" and likened the five-eighth duel to "the Golden Slipper of the NRL" between two young headline acts.

A short-priced favourite to win tomorrow night's Dally M, Carney is keen for the Marshall challenge.

"I read an article about Benji and how stoked he is to have played a full season," Carney said.

"He's going into the finals playing some good football. He's very dangerous and you can't take your eyes off him for one second, otherwise he can hurt you. Benji and Robbie Farah are the Tigers' backbone.

"Benji is one of the best in that [five-eighth] position. It's going to be tough and I hope I'm up for the challenge."

Carney, who has enjoyed a fairytale return with the Roosters, has not given too much thought to the Dally M.

Marshall, who has hit his straps in attack for the Tigers, is sure to push him all the way for league's greatest gong.

The Roosters won 18-8 against North Queensland on Saturday and, while it was not a brilliant finals tune-up, Carney was happy with his side's defensive effort.

Fittler was on the sideline for Channel 9 during the Tigers' 21-18 loss to Gold Coast on Friday and watched Marshall closely.

He said there had been plenty of publicity ahead of the Roosters-Tigers final and it would only inspire Carney and Marshall to lift a gear.

"We've already got a great build-up with [coach] Tim Sheens taking over the SFS and making it a fortress, telling the Roosters, 'you can't train here'," Fittler said. "So there's a real animosity between the clubs.

"It will get both teams playing tough. If that happens, Carney and Marshall will be at their best.

"If Benji goes out thinking about passing, he won't have a good game. If he goes out thinking about tackling and getting his jumper dirty, I think the two of them will shine.

"They are the two best to watch at the moment. They have speed and skill. It's why you pay your money to go."

Benji has to run to the line. HE MUST PLAY DIRECT AND RUN TO THE LINE. if he does this, the Roosters will get on the back foot and we will win.

Robert Lui has to run to the line as well.

And fast line speed in defence. Get in their faces and shut down the options. Toddy P is the key to this, I believe. Fulton and Gibbs coming (hopefully) back in will held the D as well.

what ive been screaming about all year.. last few weeks we have seen him do this a bit!! cmon benji!!

Me too. I don't know why a team which is so dynamic when it runs the ball and so dodgy when it kicks… kicks so often. Especially early in the tackle count. It drives me nuts.

The Daily Telegraph are a bunch of Nuffies… This will have very little to do with Benji or Carney. This game will be won in the forwards regardless what the scoreboard tells us at Fulltime...

Neither will get the chance to be Superstars of the Game if thier Forward Packs dont win the battle up front and on the ground... (Hate the term grind).

Sauce, Gibbs & Fifita the Meter Eater will decide this game!!!

Hopefully Watto. The Tigers forwards dominated the Roosters pack at Campbelltown all game only to get done at the death due to Anasta's bomb which Ryan fumbled. They laid an excellent platform for the backline to have a say but the side is certainly playing a lot better now than then.

The thing the Roosters need to deal with is getting their energy up after the humidity in Townsville took a lot out of them. Plenty of sides have turned in a flat performance a week after playing in humid conditions up north.

 Ok….. but I think Benji and Robbie will be in it right up to their eyeballs...

I think I'm a good luck charm. The boys have only lost once this year when I have attended and that was at bluetongue

Taking care of Todd Carney is no different to taking care of JT.You cant take your eyes off those two when you line up against them.Put him out of the game and disable the rest of the team , he is a match winner without a doubt.
Must admit though, roosters forwards are big boys ..Chooks on steroids and our boys , free range..

Carney is the Roosters most dangerous player, and he is now playing in his most dangerous position - five-eighth. When he played for the Raiders he was a real bogey man for us - remember the hay-maker field goal he kicked to beat us in (expletive, cursed, blasphemy) golden point in (maybe) 2006? I believe we are a better team all over the park than the Roosters, but I hope we have a plan to stifle Carney.

….and punish Sean Kenny Doodle

No real need for this . Remember before the Panthers game we were all exremely concerned about the bombs and what Walsh was going to do to us but when we shut him down and some others it was "good nite panthers!!".. That is what we need to do against the roosters .. Same approach and similar game plan , target key men and impose on the game … and put the chooks to bed .. simple aint it ??

Yeah, but everyone knows free range is better!
