Siege in Sydney Cafe

MOTHER-of-two Katrina Dawson, 38-year-old daughter of well-known Sydney lawyer Sandy Dawson has been identified as one of the two hostages killed in the Cafe Lindt siege in Martin Place. A 34-year-old man was also killed, along with the gunman, Man Haron Monis.

Sydney’s terror siege horror ended in tragedy early this morning with three dead - including the lone gunman - as police stormed the Martin Place cafe.

Flashes of light and gunshot rang out from the building only moments after six hostages escaped the clutches of armed Islamic hate preacher Sheik Man Haron Monis just after 2am.

Tragically, police confirmed two of the hostages, a 34-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were killed.

Three other people were treated at hospitals including:

- a woman, 43, who has a gunshot wound to her leg

- a police officer, 39, grazed in the face by a bullet and later discharged

- a woman, 30, who suffered back problems

Let's start deporting them all , why waste our Resources and wait till February for this guy's Court case (Gunman) deport him . Even those Brothers from Yagoona that went to Syria to fight for Isis , stamp there Passport's to never return . NO IFS BUT"S OR NOTHING.
Can you imagine if that extremist found another 4 or 5 people willing to go with him in that Lindt cafe , they could of started beheading Hostages who bloody knows with these Sicko's .

The man behind Sydney's siege, Man Haron Monis, expressed outrage about Prime Minister Tony Abbott's "Team Australia" comments in a series of online tirades and has a long history of directing hatred at senior politicians.

Most notorious for sending abusive letters to the families of Australian soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan, Monis also has a lengthy track record of attacking politicians on social media, including Mr Abbott and his predecessor Kevin Rudd.

In extensive posts, he has claimed to be under "constant attack" by the Australian government and has compared himself to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, saying false charges, including sexual assault, have been made against him for "political reasons".

Just last week Monis – who had more than 14,000 "likes" on social networking site Facebook - branded Australians who supported the United States and its foreign policy "racist and terrorist" on his Facebook page, which late on Monday night was taken down.

"Shame on Team Australia and shame on those racist and terrorist Australians who support the governments of America and its allies including Australia."

The Facebook page bills itself as a "counter terrorism" page and states "it is 'Team Islam' against Australian oppression and terrorism."

He went on to congratulate Muslims who had "chosen 'Team Islam'".

In a letter to Mr Abbott on November 1, 2013, Monis wrote – in what can now be seen as a chilling portent of Monday's siege - attacked the Prime Minister for declaring Australia's mission to Afghanistan over during a visit to Tarin Kowt military base.

Monis argued that Australia's policy in Afghanistan "has a significant role in jeopardising security and peace in the world especially in Australia", challenged the Prime Minister to a debate about the Afghan war and promised to support government policy if he lost the debate.

"However, if it is proven in our debate that the government's policy endangered Australia, if it is proven the government made Australia unsafe, if it is proven that Australia and Australians will be attacked, in that case I expect you to change the Australia's (sic) policy."

Monis last week praised the Islamic State group for its provision of services in Syria and Iraq – though most experts say that such services are largely used for propaganda and in fact the group predominantly terrorises local populations.

He has also claimed to be one of the "victims and witnesses of the torture by the barbaric and terrorist Australian authorities".

And Monis has also attacked former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, including after Mr Rudd criticised the self-styled preacher over the letters he sent to dead soldiers' families.

Mr Rudd said at the time: "I think people … I think their stomachs turn."

Mr Rudd vowed to review Australia's immigration laws after Iranian-born Monis – who arrived in Australia in 1996 as a refugee - was charged with seven counts of harassment over the letters to soldiers' families.

As recently as December 5, Monis was still fulminating on Facebook about Mr Rudd's comments, insisting it was up to God as to whether he would be deported from Australia.

something positive out of all this…

In a climate of fear and uncertainty, Australians have banded together to show their support for the Muslim population.

The #illridewithyou hashtag amassed almost 120,000 tweets on Monday evening, as Australians took a stand against anti-Muslim sentiment in the wake of the Martin Place siege.
Workers gather at Martin Place during the siege at the nearby Lindt cafe.

A young Sydney woman, Rachael Jacobs, appears to have inspired the campaign after posting a moving Facebook status about her encounter with a Muslim woman earlier in the day.

"...and the (presumably) Muslim woman sitting next to me on the train silently removes her hijab," Ms Jacobs wrote.

"I ran after her at the train station. I said 'put it back on. I'll walk with u'. She started to cry and hugged me for about a minute - then walked off alone."

The inspiring status quickly circulated on social media before inspiring the #illridewithyou hashtag.

Sydney TV content editor Tessa Kum said she "broke" when she read Ms Jacob's story and decided to post the following message on Monday afternoon:

"If you [regularly] take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire & don't feel safe alone: I'll ride with you," s

Please keep all comments and posted articles relative to this story. A reminder to think before you post inflammatory comments as well.

Not targeting anyone in particular, just want to make sure this thread doesn't get out of hand.

Cheers.

The young man who managed the business deserves some major recognition for his bravery

I'd like to think I would have the same bravery in that situation , I have often thought how I would go handling a robbery or such

To the families involved and their friends my condolences and RIP

#illridewithyou is a bloody great idea. Something like this could easily turn into a civil war or a religious war- Australia a truly multicultural and a great country.

Sad news that two of the hostages were killed, thoughts are with their families. Top shelf job by the cops to ensure there were no more fatalities.

Interesting to note the arsehole was a Shiite. Strange that he would associate himself with Islamic State, they'd wipe him like a dirty arse.

Anyway, hoping everyone can keep themselves in check today and don't go off giving innocent people a spray over the actions of one psychopath.

Apparently he had converted from Shia to Sunni. But he was a complete whack job so his understanding of the IS attitude to Islam. Clown didn't seem to know he had the wrong flag…

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath. This guy was just a big L Loser.
He had backed himself into a corner by his excessive behaviour over a period of time. When he had nothing else to Lose, he decided he might want to make a big final statement so attached himself to his idea of a cause. His was Islam, but with his mentality it could just as easily been voices from an alien mother ship.
Big L ! I think it is important to understand that the Australian Muslim community is as repulsed by this as everyone else.
My thoughts go to the families of those killed and wounded by his senseless and completely meaningless actions.

What I fail to understand is the fact that this lunatic came here as a refugee and, despite all the laws he has broken since coming here, wasn't deported back to where he came from.
How many strikes do you get before you're shown the door?

I think the issue was he hasn't been tried yet CK

No matter where you are from or what you have done you still deserve your day in court and are innocent until proven guilty by a jury

Actions like this however are a reason capital punishment should be brought back in though

Those were my thoughts exactly. His use by date had well and truly expired and it appears he had done nothing to accept or conform to the social or cultural standards of the country that had offered him asylum. I am ignorant of this side of Australian legislation, but I would think that the offer of asylum should be conditional on conforming to Australian social standards.

Let me clarify, when I said "deport them all" I was meaning the extremists that support the cause Isis.
Like NT says we shouldn't judge all the good Muslims in this Country that want to adapt and live the Australian way.

He never did face his day in court scheduled for February. With his state of mind and knowing he was a goner he went through his senseless and cowardly act.

We have troops in action in the middle east, Do we all think that this is ok and that there would be no repercussions??

As a vet who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, I have to say Im very wary of comments like this.I dont like the insinuation that we brought this upon ourselves.

That said…what upsets me more is comments like "Australia has lost its innocence". BS!

We as a nation have been active in the middle east for a long while now and we have spent the majority of that time fighting. As such, we have been on the radar for some time as a target. Our intelligence agencies and Police know this damned well and have been doing an exemplary job. Our courts are letting us down.

Australians need to wake up.We need to stop with the political correctness and demand of our leaders that if they catch these scumbags planning attacks, they get mandatory life in prison. They are damaged animals and cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be rehabilitated. They have forfieted their right to live amongst civilised society as human beings...they have done so as they are less than human.

This post isnt meant to be alarmist, I live my life as I want to everyday. However I am also aware of the real world around me and when I see warning signs like muslims protesting in the streets holding placards about beheadings I fume. When I hear that a self proclaimed sheik with a long history of violent crime who sent aweful letters to the families of dead Aussie soldiers, who was still caught up in his wifes murder, who posted tonnes of extremist propaganda on social media and who was accused of 40 cases of sexual assault was able to get bail and cause this disaster I am perplexed....that is what is frightening...our authorities know about these pricks and seem to have little power to deal with them.

I blame our politicians, especially those weak gutted turds who blocked the anti terror legislation recently. Just behind them I blame the media. The coverage of this terrible event made me feel sick. All forms of media have two peoples blood on their hands today.
