Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

@jirskyr Like most people I like Gutho, but I'm not sure you want to break the bank to make him the cornerstone of your team.

I agree and that's the Eels major problem in 2019 - who exactly can they rely on consistently to build their team around? Gutho? Mahoney? Moses? Jaeman Demon Heymon Salmon? All flakey.

@TigersBusDriver

Sorry guys been on this forum for long time but don’t like to say too much .

We have all but signed broncos hooker Jake Turpin. It explains why Liddle not really-signed yet.

Let’s keep it Hush hush so broncos don’t up their offer.

@innsaneink Being behind Slater was pretty much perfect for him though because he was 18 looking to come in to first grade over the next year or two which would coincide with Slater retiring.
Melbourne do seem to do a really good job of stockpiling talent though. They don't seem to care too much about being overstocked in positions, they just want talented kids in their system because they can pay off big time on relatively low contracts. Hopefully we start taking a similar approach with the likes of Cini, Talau etc. if they keep showing promise.

Also nobody can allow themselves to be ignorant of how many players Melbourne end up discarding. No argument they are a great system, and what better way for a young player to develop than away from Sydney/Brisbane microscopes, under basically the greatest coach of all time and some of the most elite players of all time. They also fail / cull just as many players as anyone else does.

I agree with @TigerTiger that it makes sense for Storm to identify a top junior prospect at FB when Slater is clearly on his last contract. Tedesco is nothing like that at all - either Paps plays wing his for his Tigers career or he leaves.

You also have to consider that Paps perhaps WANTED to leave Tigers, not just because of pathway to NRL behind Tedesco but also to want to be in the Melbourne system. In that regard it's not the recruitment guys / strategy to blame, it's the player management strategy.

Lastly I'll say that Paps left 2 years ago and I personally think it's a bit dumb to say "I told you so" after a totally different club had a teenage player for two whole years before putting them in FG. A player who never ever played FG before. Plenty - I'd argue most - promising players who leave clubs end up doing nothing special.

And Paps is about 5 matches into his FG career, typically coming on in the last 15 minutes and playing in one of the better sides in the comp. Moses Mbye would probably also playing eye-catching football if asked to take the field for Melbourne, up 24-6 and with all the running.

Let's let Paps play 50 games starting at fullback before deciding whether or not he was "one that got away".

Sterling on Ch 9 Sunday explained that Papenhuyzen came from the TIgers system and always had something special that set him apart from others. If Sterling is aware of this, why did we not match the Storm offer?

I do appreciate under David Warwick our junior recruitment has been excellent so in that respect we have improved, However, we have never recovered from the loss of Korobeite, JAC and hopefully Dylan Smith, Cini and young Logan can progress through to our NRL team,

How does the landscape change if we were to look at playing Brooks at 5/8 and Mybe at centre going forward?

Recruiting a halfback and a fullback?

Very badly if you ask me. Brooks is halfback and Mbye is fullback. Get used to it. The spine is starting to gel. Sure there are bad games but when they are good they are very good. We just need the consistency.

Sometimes in a game i notice the subtle things. Little things in our win like Benji directing in the centre and Brooks running on the outside of him. It looked normal, it looked like thats how it should be.

I also saw the try Mybe was disallowed by Mahe's obstruction call. The way Mybe finished that looked every bit like a quality centre.

Not a big fan of blanket statements like Brooks is an out and out half back. There is enough in his game to suggest he may be better at 5/8.

Well if the donkeys have just signed Segeyaro, then he may want to head south anyway.

@Balmain_Boy I'm not sure about Ayoub, but Isaac Moses certainly didn't fall for it. Funny how long the negotiations are taking with Mitchell Moses again.

I don't know Ryan personally, but a friend of mine does, and at the time he told me our offer was about 20k more than the Storms. In the end it came down to Teddy being here and an opportunity to be part a very, very successful system elsewhere. As successful as Melbourne are, from what i was being told at the time, i think he would have stayed had Tedesco already left or made his intentions to leave clear.

Not sure if this mentioned elsewhere, but James Roberts? Clearly not gonna be at Brisbane much longer.....
Does he have any relationship with Madge?

I still think we should re-sign Jacob Liddle.

I'm not fussed either way if Liddle is re-signed or not. WT have to recruit another hooker anyway. Liddle has not yet shown us he is reliable enough to be the main hooker, so if we recruit a good hooker that can compete for a shot at NRL stage- all good, we have 2 potential candidates. We make a reasonable offer to Liddle if he stays fit for the season and he can take it or leave.

Would explain the Segy signing, I thought Turpin sparked their attack, they looked heaps better than previous weeks

Teddy seems to have had enough of Isaac and wants a new manager
