Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Imo brooks is still the issue....he needs to be the leader out there taking the big kicks if he can become a dominant half then it doesn’t matter who is next to him.....Reynolds should not be the main kicker....i think if benji stays on we should switch brooks to 6, he has a fanatic short kicking game and really good running game...with madden being the long term game manger....but say benji retires and Reynolds is off the book but madden isn’t ready I recon Blake green wouldn’t be a bad option at 7

“but it would free up considerable space in the Tigers' salary cap **as they attempt to rebuild for next season.**”

Classic. We are still in the hunt this year but “rebuilding” for next. If we make the finals is it classified as a rebuild or pragmatically looking to improve the roster? Part of which is assessing options related to the medical circumstances surrounding one of our contracted players.

Anyone checked out the Broncos backline for this round? I don’t know half the players.
Apparently one is a G.I clone according to Broncos fans. Similar size weight skills when G. I was 19.

Xavier Coates biggest weapon I have seen since Folau. Dominated under 20s Origin looks like a star in the making.

The Lurker: Wests Tigers to medically retire Ben Matulino?

Would be a huge development.

Matulino to be medically retired?

Wests Tigers are considering trying to medically retire prop Ben Matulino in a bid to get him off the club's books.

The Kiwi international is 30 and has a chronic knee injury that has hampered his performances this season.

The club has told rival teams that Matulino is up for sale - despite the fact he has two years left on his contract.

But there have been no takers and the Tigers are now reportedly considering the more drastic move of attempting to medically retire the former Warriors star.

An independent doctor would have to rule on Matulino's injury and he would get the money he is entitled - but it would free up considerable space in the Tigers' salary cap as they attempt to rebuild for next season.

If true it would be serious Matulino has always played hard. He looks hampered by it and I remember he failed a physical for the Knights on the knee before we signed him.

I Would like to see Cini and Dillon both get development contracts next year. Watching nearly all the nsw rl Jersey Flegg vids and being absolutely realistic on how many and what kids we should buy or attempt to buy, these are my nominations, Jake averillo - bulldogs, doesn’t have a dev contract and is a far better half’s prospect than anyone we have at the club, is about 6ft 2, has speed, strong around hips can hold of defenders, great goal kicker. Josh Cook- south Sydney, has a full time pre season coming up next year very good dummy half owns the space around the play the ball dictates tempo, plays short sides really well. Shalom ofu - dragons, just starting to step up to cc, good late footwork , has speed but more importantly has correct body positioning at impact, wins a tremendous amount of play the balls, and he has dirt in him, ultra competitive.

@teddy23 If you'd asked me 2 years ago with RCG i'd be super keen to sign him up. But he's not the player he was. Seems to have lost his aggression. I also know a couple of Penrith folk and apparently his salary for next year would make your eyes water.

probably from when he got his jaw smashed he's become a bit gunshy....

Agree 100%.

Yep that's definitely when his form dipped, been gun shy since returning. If he can somehow overcome that mental block and get back to his original form, he would be an excellent pick up. He was quite the maniac on the field before the broken jaw.

Zac Cini’s already on board, comes in from next year as a D.P player (signed until 2021).

There seems to be an assumption that all these development players will have a spot in the 30 next year. Surely some of them could be NSW Cup instead?

@Masterton Not from me. It is more the recognition that our club views them as players identified as important to our brand and future. As training evolves, this could attract specialist one on one training eg Dillon receiving coaching from Billy Slater. Just my view.

If we miss out on a prop like Welch or Ese'ese I wouldn't mind us taking a bit of a different path and going after Jazz Tevaga to play lock and backup hooker. He's got a player option for next year so he won't necessarily stay at the Warriors if a better offer comes along. We're not going to steal Brandon Smith off the Storm but Tevaga is a similar bustling, competitive player who has done well when playing in the pack and can do a good job at hooker. It would save us having to carry a backup hooker on the bench which is a huge plus...

@Geo will Dillon and Scolari be considered for development contracts? Both have a lot of what we are short of.

You'd think that would depend on who else we can recruit externally. Already 3 development players signed for next year by the sounds of it: Cini and possibly Simpkin and Garner.

Henry LP is a dev player but was only promoted early this year so he may still be on a dev contract next year. You'd certainly hope he's not on an NRL squad next year at least! Otherwise our squad would already be practically full.

This is also why it's imperative to not re-sign Benji and Robbie. Unless we can offload Reynolds Benji has to go.

If Marshall goes and Reynolds doesn't, Marshall will have to be replaced with another 5/8 on a similar size of contract - ie not much. His departure isn't going to make much difference to the quality or makeup of the squad unless we hit a lottery ticket of a 5/8 that no-one else wants to pay for.

Next year we will have Brooks, Reynolds and Madden as noted halves with Mbye, Matto and Talau capable of also playing there.

Are you happy with our current squad? If we re-sign Liddle, Aloiai, Benji and Marshall we will have one spot left, and we're pretty much going to have the same squad next year as we do now. Everyone seems to lament our lack of pace and power, yet no one wants to release any of our current players except those on the most money.

He hasn't played there for us yet, but I wouldn't mind Talau getting a crack at 5/8 if Reynolds is out. His size will help in defence, and he can do a bit of everything. Of course if we offload Reynolds we can buy an established 5/8.

I can also see the club looking at a

6. Brooks
7. Madden

partnership in a year or two's time.

You're confusing two things. No, I'm not happy with the current squad. But freeing up the money we're currently spending on Benji Marshall isn't going to do much to improve it, barring hitting on a lottery ticket. I don't know how many times I need to say this: THE PROBLEM IS REYNOLDS. Until he's gone, we can't fix the halves long term.

There is no way we're going to go into 2020 with our 5/8 options being Reynolds (always injured, coach doesn't seem to rate him anyway), Madden (totally unproven) and someone playing out of position. Sorry, I take some of that back: I;m not going to claim to have a view on Madden - perhaps Maguire thinks he's ready to be first choice in first grade. I doubt it, but you never know.

I'm not some one-eyed Benji backer. I'd be delighted to see someone better line up in the 6 next year. But getting him out of the squad simply doesn't make much difference: someone needs to play at 5/8, we can't count on Reynolds doing it and Marshall's salary won't give us many options for a replacement.

It's not that I don't want to release players on small contracts, it's that doing so doesn't make much difference. You lose a player on minimum contract or close to it and you just replace them with another one. It may be possible to do better than Benji Marshall for next to no money but it's far from guaranteed, and if we let him walk we will be signing another 5/8.

It's about squad balance. If we already have 5/30 players capable of playing 5/8 then is it a position of priority? We could sign a Sezer, Keighan, Cust etc type if needs be.

And sometimes clubs need to back youth. We have both the 2018 Aussie schoolboys halves. One of them could do a job next to the Dally M halfback of the year if needs be. They will have their ups and downs but no more than what Benji does.

We can then sign some more props or forwards to help the halves have the space they need to perform.

You can believe what you like, but in the real world we are not going into 2020 with Reynolds, a 19 year old who isn't even in our top 30 at the moment and a bunch of fill-ins as our 5/8 options. Saying we have 5/30 players capable of playing 5/8 is meaningless: without Marshall, the current top 30 has one actual 5/8 in it and he has played half a dozen games in a season and a half.

There will be another specialist half, and if it's not Marshall there's still not going to be cap room available from releasing Marshall sufficient to add much elsewhere in the squad. You seem to be fixated on the idea that if we can just get Benji Marshall off the books we'll be able to strengthen elsewhere. You're dreaming.

Really not sure if you understand cap management. You need to have a combo of highly paid an lowly paid players. Sometimes you have to play the kids on lower contracts. Clubs do it all the time. Why wouldn't we?

We have around 300 games of NRL halves experience (excluding Brooks) in our top squad for next year. These are players with Origin experience too. Not exactly nobodies. If we re-sign Benji that's one fewer squad positions we have to recruit with for next season. Be that a forward or a replacement half. Going for a younger option, particularly a goal kicking one, is not any worse than having someone as erratic as Benji. Brooks needs to lead the team anyway, he will be our dominant half in 2020.

I understand cap management perfectly well. I'm going to set it out very simply here.
- Yes, Brooks and Reynolds have a lot of games between them. But Reynolds can't get on the field so that's largely irrelevant.
- We're not going into 2020 with no backup for Reynolds.
- Madden is not ready.
- Playing someone else out of position is not a sensible plan B.
- Therefore, we will have another 5/8 in the squad.
- If it's not Marshall it'll have to be someone on small contract because the only money available (barring getting rid of other players on higher value contracts) is what we're paying Marshall.
- Good 5/8s don't tend to be available for small money.
- If we sign a 5/8 for small money it'll either have to be someone we pretty much know isn't terribly good (because if they were good someone would offer them a better deal) or is completely unproven.
- There's no point replacing Marshall with someone we know isn't any good.
- Hence the only option is to replace Marshall with someone unproven, ie a lottery ticket.

If you're happy replacing Marshall with a lottery ticket, fine. Actually it might be worth a go because Marshall is clearly at the very, very end of his usefulness as a player. But you have to accept two things. (1) Lottery tickets often don't win, and (2) releasing Marshall won't do anything for the rest of the squad anyway, because it won't free up much cap room and we will need another 5/8 that will chew up what there is of it anyway.

He is very much in the Brandon Smith mould, is playing 13 this weekend, the warriors do have a lot of hookers and backrowers so he may be inclined to move

@851 He is a good player but our strength has always been bringing through juniors or those younger players purchased from other clubs on the cusp of NRL selection. We have a core of NRL quality players to which we add these players to improve our team and results. We should continue with this but continually improve coaching to our youth to accelerate promotion and capabilities to handle the NRL.
