Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

@iofthetigers Thanks for the replay. Perhaps we should look at a link with a Northern Rivers School. Lots of good footballers in that district.

Still think one of our biggest mistakes was not setting up a feeder team in the Qld Cup when the opportunity was there to do so

We still should. I don't understand why the Broncos need 5 feeder teams in the same comp, their young talent spread out all over the place.

There'll be plenty that slip through the cracks. The Broncos can only employ 30 odd squad members. Thinking about it, Keebra Park after all those years didn't offer us a whole host of terrific players. A few yes, but was it really worth it?

Keebra have a deal with East's Brisbane according to the website. There is no reason why WTs can't park their young Qld recruits at the school

Keebra Park severed ties with Tigers & joined the Bulldogs in 2017 after the Bulldogs injected an extra $50000 into the system. The Bulldogs pulled the pin after 1 year due to the Broncos holding scholarship clinics at the school (Mikaele was part of one clinic in 2016 before the Tigers rushed to sign him). Easts put in less than the Tigers used to & have for the last 2 years which is the same deal as Clairveux which is through Darren Smith so they are essentially with the Broncos.

Ever since the Kahu incident you are always fighting the Broncos when linking with QLD schools. I wouldn't say we were any worse off since we cut ties with Keebra. Sure we got guys like Benji and Mikaele who are good, then we got guys like Te'o who came and went; Kahu didn't even come down, then a whole bunch of blokes who didn't kick on here - Rangi Chase, BMM, JJ Felise, Liolevave, Robert Lui etc. Then all the kids we didn't get because a school alliance is no sure bet - Brimson, Arrow, David Fifita, Corey Norman etc.

You still have to sort the diamonds from the rough.

IMO we should double-down on the ties with major sporting schools that are actually within our junior districts - Holy Cross, St Gregs etc.

It's better to have elite schools aligned with you than to not, but I feel having Westfield Sports High or try and return ST Gregs to being a good rugby league school again would be a better strategy seeing a number of queenslanders get homesick or don't want to move too far from their family. But there's no reason not to do both.

And then have Easts Tigers as a QRL feeder club too (or whichever club is interested in some investment)

I think you need to go and look at the Keebra Park Alumni .....see the superstars we missed out on

Ok we weren't going to get everyone of course .....but we shouldn't have missed out on many of these blokes

Just remember a lot of these kids were coming from NZ .....weren't aligned to Brisbane or Qld

We just didn't create a true pathway to the NRL , which many other clubs did

Just remember even clubs like Canberra aligned themselves to QLd Cup sides

I still think their is a place for us .....maybe this is some bias , but with some sides in Qld Cup being absolute whipping boys

Brisbane Wests and western suburbs is not represented the link with the names .....Wests Arana Hills which was always linked with WPJRL has a strong junior base

Lot of strong league schools in the western area with 4 rugby union GPS / TAS schools in the vicinity as well and you would be the closest NRL side to the Ipswich area as well .....

The landscape has changed dramatically NSWRL clubs can't have dual registered QRL Cup players, this changed about 5 years when the NSWRL threatened clubs that they would be removed from NSWRL junior comps if they alligned with QLD Cup teams that is when Canberra left Souths & why Melbourne play Mal Maninga Cup in QLD. There is nothing wrong with the Tigers recruiting out of QLD, they have the strongest presence I have seen. I was told there was 4 scouts from the Tigers at the QLD state championships 3 weeks ago (not including Matt Balin). There used to be 10 players from NZ a year at Keebra on Tigers schlorships (Jason Lowrie used to select these players but he is not with the Tigers anymore). Now GPS & TAS schools in Brisbane will be playing league for the first time talent will come from a lot more areas.

Is it me or does it seem like things are quiet on the signing front across the whole competition. Not many clubs have made signings for next year. Unusual for this late in the year.

Has been rather quiet. Only the odd player re-signing with their current clubs.

Jack Hethrington apparently signing for Canberra.

Would've liked someone like him in our bench rotation with his aggression.

@iofthetigers thanks for providing the advice. With the increasing presence in QLD, are you of the belief this will result in more and better quality Qld junior recruits? Are we also awarding scholarships?
