Arrow's probably slightly better but you're going from $350K/year over the next 2 years for Matterson to probably $750K+/year over the next 2 years for Arrow. Not a good way to keep the books in balance...

This is my hot take !
Only really clever RL insiders saw this Matto season coming . And whilst he did play well all year , I would argue , our late season resurgence, was also largely in part to another 2nd rowers return to 1st grade .
And huge leaps in defence .
He is a great footballer, but honestly , do it for 2 -3 seasons . Then we will talk about 750k. Even packer , and Reynolds despite their flaws , have an actual resume to justify that pay .
God even Chricton played origin last year .
I actually had bigger hopes for Musgrove and Mikalele this year. And I think Aloai , could be the 13 . He was great this year .
Whilst the yardage work was great , was he like wade graham , turning the team on its head when he came back ? Or Fifita running holes through the middle @ 19 ? Or JT carrying the whole of NQ on his back. Or Trobojevic , inspiring his team .God even Nathan Brown lifted his team when he was there.
It would suck to lose him for sure , but I actually think garner, next to a brooks then , say Scott or Lomax would be cooking with gas .
I feel like Matto can be replaced .

Yes, but the idea was to have them both.

Let him go and then you have to find someone as good to actually come here.

My simplistic solution.

Tell him he is not getting a release & not getting an upgrade. Any contact from his manager around potential player swaps indicate that another club is making offers to a player that is off limits until November next year & spill straight to the media.

Wait and see what the NRL does & if nothing, start making open media statements around how we are willing to pay other promising players twice as much as they are currently on if they can get out of their contract.

@Strongee Matterson is replaceable and if he doesn't want to be here we can trade him for a couple of young superstars. If Cleary want him, I'd take the young 5/8 Burton and one other player like Burns as compensation. The other option of course is to make him play out his contract.

It would put pay to the "carrying an excessive load" theory wouldn't it?

This might be another Cleary-Madge job, where we get dragged across the coals but actually end up with someone better. I honestly think Jai Arrow has more upside than Matto, though I don't want to lose Matto.
