Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Our squad seems pretty set but definitely needs some adjustments.

Jake Averillo
Shawn Blore
Suli Pole

Replacing Toa, Hunt & Geyer.

Depth is still always a concern.

I like what Benji did bringing in Herbert as the old head. Few more lower contracts like this would be good business.

Few names floating around NSW cup I like;
Jordan Hill @ the eels (winger)
Sione Finau @ the raiders (winger)
Michael Gabrael @ the sharks (centre)

If we don’t sign anyone to strengthen us before June 30, we will not win more than 2-3 more games this season.

Most likely … KPP might go down as the last straw …

I seriously doubt there is much money left in the cap though to get someone now for the rest of the year ..: even 4 few months of Luciano’s contract might be beyond what they can take on … Blore is probably a bit cheaper , but are the Storm letting him go now ? I doubt it

We also dont want to get desperate and screw our cap and top 30 for a short term shot in the arm. Whilst digging into our depth and losing games is not great, it does help clear the wheat from the chaff and also give the talented and less experienced kids a taste and idea of what they need to do to become a regular first grader....will pay dividends in 2027.
We only have Api & JL for a limited time. I think we need to solve our backrow problem externally if at all possible. This year is a genuine chance to break the finals drought.

Im also beginning to think who is going to lead us into the 2030's.
Very important recruitment coming up
Im thinking blokes like Jake Preston or Hudson young have that leadership in them, respect, they play with a follow me attitude...moreso Young imo
I think they could both develop further into fine leader

I hope Benji is starting to think that way. Programming guys like Heywood and dare I say it, Latu Fainu to think like leaders away from the pitch.

My concern is with all the injuries and poor form to start the year at Melb Suli did not get a look in. Have never seen him play in cup so i dont know anything about him tbh.

I’ve watched a lot of Josese Lanyon both last season and this season. He has shown plenty of promise and it was good to see him get an opportunity and do well at NRL level, but we have to be mindful he is nowhere near an 80 minute player and he is not someone who has the required fitness level to show good defensive line speed and make plenty of tackles when we are doing more than our fair share of defending.
As mentioned on one of our Wests Tigers podcasts, he has generally looked better as a running and ball playing 13 which is a good thing to provide versatility when starting off the bench.
I’ve also been long thinking that both the Taotua twins would sooner or later start running the ball and playing somewhat similar to Sitili Tupouniua as they have the same type of physique and athleticism.
If that was the case we would have 2 very valuable emerging NRL players on our hands. The problem is they are still very rarely running the ball anywhere near full speed and very rarely use their strength and physicality to their advantage when defending.
I could not consider either of them for NRL until they start doing this.
Then we have Solo Saukuru who is an attacking beast, but a very lazy defender.
These 4 all have the size, physical stature and ability to be very good NRL players, but there has to be doubt about their fitness levels and application to get there.

Didnt we do Storm a favour a few years ago lending them someone for the last couple of months as injury cover as our season was shot? Might be time to call in that favour.

It’s too early to make any call on Lanyon at this stage … let’s just see what transpires over the weeks and months of this season where he will get a lot more opportunity … if people weren’t impressed with his debut last week…i don’t know what you are watching …

If we could get by with him for 2027 as the backup 9, that would be great ..I assume the young kid coming through ( Haywood) should be ready to fill in as well with another offseason and 12 months more experience under his belt ..

I checked his stats and Lanyon played 56 minutes with 2 missed tacklers …not bad …there is no need to play him 80 minutes a game …
