Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

If you play Talau you play him in his position

The minute you start debuting players out of their main position's you start creating problems for them , kids need to feel comfortable coming into the NRL or they will get eaten alive at this level

I can still remember being put into a A Grade QRL trial against Central Highlands up at Barcaldine and hadn't played centre since I was 11 in a one off game ...no warning ......nothing

I even had to ask my centre partner where I had to stand for receiving a kick off lol

It stuffs with your head trust me

Can someone who actually knows explain whether there is a difference between the top 30 and an NRL contract.

For example, if Stefano, Ad and one more player sign on we are at 30. If we pay Simpkin above minimum wage does he then take the spot of a minimum wage player in the top 30? I seem to remember that the top 30 is based on contact value so that clubs can't load up in lower grades.

Can anyone answer this for me?

Yep.
I agree.

Talau next in line.

Could Talau play wing?

Imo.... yes

Big and fast. Wouldn't look out of place.

He should play centre. JL should not be purchased because he will block Talau 's pathway as well as eat into money. We have at least one very good winger coming through without having to push Talau onto the wing to accommodate JL.

I understand your argument Paws but Joey is a strike centre and will be a real handful for the opposition. It's been a while since we had a centre as damaging.

I know he is that but we are at the stage where there is the opportunity to rebuild. Bring in Talau in the centre, Scolari on the wing, buy AJ for the other wing and bring in Doeuhi and Seyfarth. A changing of the guard and accept a few hidings as they learn.

Momo has 5/8 skills? Where did this narrative come from lol

From his having played 5/8 as a junior and in the lower grades at Souths and from watching his play at centre?

People put too much weight in where a player plays at junior level. If he was any good it would of transitioned into first grade.

I wasn't saying he would make a good 5/8 in first grade, I was saying he has 5/8 skills. He does. He got them from having played there. He's got a good pass on him, a good head for the game and he plays eyes up.

I have to agree mate. We need to stop buying named players past their prime.

All the talk is Talau is a gun, why spend big bucks on someone to block his pathway. I also think Momo has the potential to be as good as bj.

Totally! We spend the big bucks to block Talau’s pathway and Storm buy him and we all know what happens next. We’ve seen it so many times.

I watched Tommy at centre in a couple of his games in JF and CC and his strength attracted a number of defensive players which then allowed him to offload with great result. I agree that he would be wasted on the wing plus do we really want him to start out of position as he finds his way into the NRL as pointed out by others on this forum?

does anyone have an update on Liddle and do we think JR pending will be DH or Mbye.?

Ziggy you make too much sense.

thanks mate...it beats arguing just for the sake of it...

I guess that the club is going to once again hedge their bets that once Liddle is fit he'll be right. Simpkin will be in the lower grades plying his trade, hopefully he is the real deal.

What I was asking CB,if Liddle isn't fit to start which he definitely wont be,do people think the hooker role will be Mbye or JR to start in rnd one....

I would think JR will be the starting hooker if fit and is allowed to play by the NRL.

In my opinion, JR didn’t look at all comfortable playing hooker last year.

He is an effective runner from dummy half if there is a quick play-the-ball but his passing from the ground is ordinary at best. He also doesn’t seem to engage the markers nor does he bring players on to the ball. The other concern has to be his body over a full season. Will he be able to handle 50+ tackles a game? The evidence of the past two years would seem to suggest otherwise.

I think Mbye is the better option and if he plays well, he would have to be an outside chance of playing hooker for Queensland given they have manufactured Hunt into that role in the past - so there is incentive.

Definitely agree. Don’t think Reynolds has the motor to defend at hooker for 80. A few articles mentioned Mbye was the early favourite for the position, which especially makes sense if BJ is signed and playing centre.
Reynolds will be on a bench possibly including Stefano, Mikaele and Packer I reckon. Funnily can’t find a spot for Chee Kam at this stage if Packer moves back into the side.

Will need a second rower on the bench...big Lucy ain’t playing 80

Why?

He’s an impact edge forward like frizzel...you get the best out of them in stints....why limit him by playing 80 when he can go hard at it for 60

I don't think he'll have any issues playing on an edge for the full 80, especially with his big brother running off him.

In attack a running 6 and centre aren't that different

Problem is defensively as you know , at 6 you get protection as long as your edge defence isn't exposed and your not stretched to the eyeballs

Centre you need to be able to read the attack and what they are about to throw at you and at what angle it's coming at and pick the decoy

Bloody hard , and then you have the idiot outside of you who at times might as well be picking flowers

Jeez, the Idea of Jennings and BJ Leilua on one side.... thats a cracker, and the size.

Just remember boys, we used to trot out DWZ and Naiqama on one edge.....

Never a lack of effort from those lads - but really worlds apart in size compared to Jenko and BJ.

Yeah I tend to agree with you. But Madge seems to like Jennings for some reason.

RJ starts our sets off well. The rule change affects CT - Jenko is taller & safer in the air.

Generally agree with a lot you say.

However, you are joking, saying "RJ starts our sets off well" - probably 2 NRL sets in the whole of last year. (unless you are talking cc).

The guy for 2019 was a big fat, unfit nothing, that bludged on the wing every time he played there.

Reason why I like momo is because he has the ability to score a try....you give him the ball close to the line and he scores...he just always finds it, Same with garner. I honestly don’t rate momo but it’s that skill that just leaves me wondering...how does he do it! He is two slow for the wing so I guess he earns a centre spot.

Jennings

CT and Momo to miss out.

Hopefully commonsense will prevail and Madge will choose Thompson before Jennings. Jennings did nothing last season to hold a place in the starting line up for the beginning of this season, imo. Thompson always gives his best.

Yes, more so in CC no complaints from me re: last year. He's worked hard in the off season though, moving forward I could see Madge starting Jenko - safer hands in the air and bigger body. Not being able to tackle a player in the air puts CT at a disadvantage by default. We'd give away escort penalties protecting him on the wing in defence too.

IF we get AD and JL someone from last year is going to miss out.

Will it be up-and-comer Momo? Or big earner Mbye? Thompson or Jennings? Seems like there's no space for Reynolds either...

This isn't necessarily my opinion but I wouldn't be surprised to see Madge go with:

Doueihi
Nofo
Leilua
Mbye (GK)
Jennings

CT and Momo to miss out.

He'll be better this year. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see you out at the game wearing a Robert Jennings tee shirt by years end.

He would want to be 99% better this year (I'll give him 1% for 2019 for showing up).

Hopefully he won't get the chance. He is a bludger just like his brother Michael.

That'll be the day I'd be wearing a Robert Jennings tee shirt.

It hurts just typing his name

If he is our top try scorer in 2020 will you change your user name to Russell Jennings?

He could score 100 tries and I won't.

The only way he would be our top try scorer is if he has a year like 2018 and falls over the line 18 times.
