Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

How does a NRL club "align" itself with a particular school? Would it be an official thing where basically any talent that school produces, the club that it is aligned with gets first dibs on?

We used to have an ‘exclusive’ alignment with Keebra Park. I believe that has now been changed to being a feeder club for the gold coast titans.
There will always be kids at those schools that other clubs are already alligned to. However improve the relationship as a whole and identify and harness the relations, make clearer pathways through to senior football for Wests Magpies / Tigers and there may be more kids inclined to stay within our catchment area.

It’s all about giving the kids an opportunity.

We are also infiltrating the Westfield sports high. Their teacher / coach of their schoolboys team is our jersey flegg coach.

Don't need to let Holy Cross slip away either, keep them all under our wing.

Having a constant stream of young kids from these schools is the way to go. Don’t know why the club moved away from doing it seems pretty obvious to me

A lot of the boys at St Greg's are/were boarders on scholarship with other NRL clubs.

Holy Cross always produces good plyers - Woods, Moses, Brooks, Ben Stevanovic, Curtis Wilson and Zac Camroux.

Brendan Tumeth is one to watch produced from Holy Cross and the Balmain juniors NSW U16s rep.

The starting point is to offer scholarships to country players to board at the school. These are offered on the condition that the player is signed to the wests tigers

Not fact, but if you are offering to support the school & rebuild their sports program that would be a good starting point. Increase the reputation & also support them financially.

Yes, this is what we need to do. Top up the local player pool with some of the best country boys. Campbelltown might be more comfortable for the bush boys, a bit more quiet than some of the busier metro schools.

Actually securing the best juniors from the south West would also be a great start. The magpies have been embarrassingly poor for a very long time now.

The Club might like to take a look at Oran Park. There must be many young families in the area with boys and girls who want to play footy. This is a huge development with potential for further growtb.

I was speaking to someone at the club early in the year and the benefit with St Gregory’s is historically a lot of the players were from the area. Holy Cross brings in kids from outside the area. Either way it’s smart but with a rapidly growing South Western Population strategically the MacArthur region is extremely important.

Agreed about the South West. I am disappointed the State Govt didn't build a huge new stadium and COE at Oran Park instead of rebuilding the SFS. The growth potential with Camden and surrounding areas is huge.

Huge growth at Oran Park at the moment. Their football club falls under Group 6 which is technically Tigers territory, however it’s not very well run and it’s very disorganised, not heaps of guys make it out of group 6 into NRL and those that do (Keppie, Stone, Hindmarsh) tend to end up in the eels junior system.

Our team for 2035 really coming along nicely

That's actually realistic. COE might be completed by then too. I wonder if we'll still be playing out of 17 home grounds.....:face_with_rolling_eyes:

Guys let's not write off Jock Madden. He only turned 20 this year, he's still young. As others have said, we all thought McIntyre would never cut it, yet he has been really good in his short career so far. We all thought Seyfarth would be the development player to do well, yet he failed to impress in the three games he played.

And then there's the Lomax case. It just shows that a guy needs to be allowed to find his feet in first grade. Rack up some games, get some consistency, then once he feels confident, flourish. We should monitor Talau. It might not happen for him this season, but he has been quietly notching up some solid performances on the wing. I suspect by next season he might be ready to unleash.

In terms of signings, Tristan Sailor is on our radar. He is super talented, being able to play in the halves, fullback and wing. His defensive reads are a work-on, but he puts his body on the line and would fit in well here at WT. He has an awesome offensive attitude, where he can both follow a game plan and try hard to find points.

Just my thoughts but what better advertisement for WTs and. RL is to use Benji as a development officer in this region. Every kid had the Marshall step and he is instantly associated with WTs, Kiwi expat families and success.

I'm not so sure if direct affiliation with schools reaps direct benefits. Holy Cross, for example, is directly in Balmain territory and you aren't supposed to have to do anything special to have those kids playing in the Balmain junior district sides. Same with St Gregs, those kids will play in Macarthur teams on the weekends.

Tigers had a long-running affiliation with Keebra as we all know, and what exactly did we get from that arrangement? Not a complete waste of time but for every Benji Marshall there was a non-event Kurtis Rowe, with plenty of other players going to clubs that weren't Tigers - Greg Eastwood, Kenny Edwards, Jai Arrow, AJ Brimson, Jesse Arthars, Payne Haas etc. And lots of the kids Tigers took on didn't quite make it - Liolevave, JJ Felise etc. Tigers only ended the Keebra arrangement 3 years ago.

So I'm not against trying to promote special ties with a school, but nothing stops you from signing up the best talent from any school. Hence why I think a lot of clubs aren't particularly bothered for propping up school programs.

In fact it is often the other way around - certain schools become placement locations for kids already bound to the club, rather than the school offering up unaffiliated juniors. E.g. St Dom's used to be a Penrith Panthers placement location and for that reason used to really dominate (no pun) schoolboy football. When I was a kid, a school like Penshurst Marist had a lot of St George rep kids and were a really strong football school, but now they've gone co-ed and I don't think it's the same anymore.

When singleton and Harvey’s consortium bought the entertainment quarter a redevelopment was always going to happen at the SFS

I have been reading about this Zane Camroux kid and asking if he is old enough to give a run later in the year if we are out of the finals run ? Only a kid but a year or 2 growing and putting on weight i see him been a 6 like Jack Wighton ? Thoughts

He's not eligible this year.

This school development is good and well but at the present moment is a deflection by the club of the failures over the years including this year ! The club needs to consolidate and sign up for next season as if there is no real success in the next year or two things could get interesting on a financial basis!
The club urgently needs some real success and signing 15year olds really won’t wash !
