Hooper reporting Staines looking for 4 year contract, $500k per season.

What’s he played, two games? Even $300k a season is overs.

We need to pay up to get talent, even if it's potential talent.

If you were interviewing for the same type of job with 5 different employers and got 5 offers, what would make you take the job with the least desirable employer? Money.

Unless we take some risks and buy on potential, we're going to be left with older, broken players and other clubs cast offs. Gotta role the dice otherwise we'll be crap forever.

I don’t see him being offered that anywhere. Give him $1.2million over 4 years. We need to take risk for sure and I think paying him even that is a risk, he can’t be expecting 500 grand a season.

The Knights signed Ponga for $700k a season after only playing two games. They took the risk and blew everyone out of the water. The year they bought him the Knights won only 1 game, this year they will play finals football.

We are as undesirable now as the Knights were in 2016.

If the reports are true and we are paying $600k for Leilua next year, $500k for one of the most highly touted young fullbacks in the game seems reasonable to me.

He doesn’t look like the next Ponga to me but I understand what you’re saying my point is more we shouldn’t pay that money if we don’t have to. I don’t see him getting offered that, maybe do a long deal where it’s $300k first year and goes up $100k every season over 4 years.

if there's one thing we all know it's that we will have to pay overs to get him

Yeah for sure would just rather do increases every year so he’s still getting paid a good amount over a long period and we aren’t spending huge money in the first season where he’s still finding his feet

We probably won’t even sign him anyway ?

Staines is a fullback who can play wing. He has a great junior rep resume. Ponga MK2?

We have Hartigan and Maguire in charge who I have great confidence in to get the best outcome for WTs.

Stains is only 184cm...just on 6ft ..too short..???

He'd be a little taller than Slater and Papenhuyzen? It doesn't seem to impact their games.

Size isn’t important it’s power that matters. Paps is small but powerful and hard to handle. Staines is quick but not sure how good he is at busting tackles but he looks a talent for sure.

True. Ponga would be around the same size as well.

I would rather take a huge risk with a guy who could be anything than throw money at old or broken down blokes like Reynolds, Packer, McQueen, Proctor. Spend big on the best youth in the game and see what happens. Everything else has failed.

But considering what we are paying others ,I’d take that gamble on potential alone
In two years he could be one of the best fullbacks in the game for 500 a season 🤗
I’ll try anything at this point 😂

That's what got us into trouble in the first place.

"I’ll try anything at this point"

Rather pay Burton that money myself - more upside.

That is overs in my opinion for a guy who has played what...2-3 games of NRL.

Wasn't it Madge who said he's not interested in paying overs?!

He's on the hunt for value because the club still has to re-balance the cap.

This Staines asking price should conclude negotiations between his management and us. Move on

I think very highly of Burton but I think Staines would be even better. He is extremely fast and a try scoring machine.

Yeah I agree. If you’re gonna pay overs at least do it on kids who could become stars.

I hope they keep the development System for next season and we sign some more young rep stars. I’ve noticed William kei has been doing a lot of training with our first grade side so I reckon he’ll be one

the value argument is completely moot because we have nothing attracting players to the club. The players we can pick up at good value prices will be only because they get no other offers from rivals.

Half back and full back are critical positions. Would be happy to sign both Penrith juniors up and pay overs if it means we get them both. Rather young upcomers then retirement village players we have previously paid overs for and no value. Backs should be priority now as well as tapping non performers on the shoulder. love Marshall but his time is sadly up.

Doueihi needs to become a much better ballplayer if we're going to run him at 6. I like the idea of grabbing Staines and Burton, but we need to be careful with how green our spine would be. The Tigers had a relatively young spine when we won the comp in 05, but Hodgson and Prince had both played state of origin and Marshall and Farah have gone on to become 2 legends of the game. Obviously we didn't know they'd be that good then, but with the benefit of hindsight it's pretty clear that a young spine having success like that is more the exception than it is the rule and they were all great players.

If we're planning to write-off next year and probably not really be a contender until 2023, then I can see the logic. But what's the point of creating a young team and then by the time they're ready to compete, they're all gonna come off contract. We need a mix of young, improving players who exceed their cap number and veterans who are win now players to continually compete. Otherwise you just end up at square 1 again (see what happened to us after 2013/14 when we ushered in the Big 4).

No-one is going to come close to that. 400k would be the absolute max and most clubs would offer him, a deal that starts off at around 300k and maybe finishes at 400k over 3 years. Just over a million. Of course we'll have to pay more than other clubs but i don't think we should.
How many clubs are looking for a fullback? not many

I think Blore & Stefano are good examples of value signings. No guarantee they're gonna be stars but they've got a high ceiling for development. Both clubs wanted to keep them. They just weren't quite ready for the top grade there and we used that to our advantage.

Seems like Madge wants it done that way. Take advantage of other clubs circumstances

Geez people get excited and carried away here.

Staines has only played 2 games in NRL. One was in a rout. He is not getting picked in first grade currently and supposedly Penrith are going to be happy to let him go.......but he is the next Ponga and worth over $500K pa?

I'm not sure they're what you'd call value signings though. Stefano is on almost $300k a year (reportedly) and had never played first grade.

Ponga had always been labelled a young superstar. Staines has just been a good young footballer. Huge difference.

BB have you just entered this thread now? Over the last 4 pages, 4 posters specifically said we should pay Staines $500k or more and two posters have used Ponga as a reference for Staines (excluding the comparisons in size with Ponga).
