Jennings was a try scoring machine at Souths before coming here so be careful paying overs to a player on the end of well oiled attack.
Now if Crichton was available then a big YES

Geez people get excited and carried away here.

Staines has only played 2 games in NRL. One was in a rout. He is not getting picked in first grade currently and supposedly Penrith are going to be happy to let him go.......but he is the next Ponga and worth over $500K pa?

***No-one said that but his agent.*** And every single club would have laughed and told him he's dreaming...!
Ponga had always been labelled a young superstar. Staines has just been a good young footballer. Huge difference.

BB have you just entered this thread now? Over the last 4 pages, 4 posters specifically said we should pay Staines $500k or more and two posters have used Ponga as a reference for Staines (excluding the comparisons in size with Ponga).

Who do you feel we should target?

Im not suggesting that Staines isnt worth signing, but definitely not at $500K pa for 4 years. No player who has played 2 games on the wing in first grade is worth that. Yes it worked with Ponga, Ive seen nothing to suggest Staines is Ponga MK2 and the fact he cant crack in the panthers team and that they are going to let him go, also suggests he isnt.

Who'd Id target? I think we need a 6 more than anything. Havent really seen enough in AD to suggest its him, but there also arent any stand out options available, Burton may be. Yes we also need some pace in the backs and if we could get a JAC, Staines etc for the right price then you grab them.

Staines debut was a lot of catching and diving over the line.

He looks good, but be very wary of paying overs for potential. For every Ponga, there are a number of Milford, Jack Birds, Matt Moylans and Ash Taylors running around in the NRL.

Get rid of Grub & Brooks get in Burton let Benji play on but get a Gareth Ellis/Beau Scott type next to him to cover all his turn style tackles.

I would rather see Benji go & keep Brooks, whilst Benji has been a great servant to the Tigers he is too dominant a player & appears to stifle Brooks game. The last time Brooks played without Benji he was Dally M halfback of the year.

As a fan base we really need to stop with this kind of reasoning.

If Brooks is dominated by anyone its because he is not good enough and is not the player we need.

Good halves work out a way to play with other good halves.

Excuses for him have dried up.

And if your forwards are being smashed? Sterling and Kenny would find it difficult to operate. What do you say to that?

More excuses.

No Mate, it is reality.

The Club would rely on its junior development staff. We have done well in the last couple of years so we should have confidence in our knowledge of Staines.

Hooper reporting Staines looking for 4 year contract, $500k per season.

What’s he played, two games? Even $300k a season is overs.

We need to pay up to get talent, even if it's potential talent.

If you were interviewing for the same type of job with 5 different employers and got 5 offers, what would make you take the job with the least desirable employer? Money.

Unless we take some risks and buy on potential, we're going to be left with older, broken players and other clubs cast offs. Gotta role the dice otherwise we'll be crap forever.

I don’t see him being offered that anywhere. Give him $1.2million over 4 years. We need to take risk for sure and I think paying him even that is a risk, he can’t be expecting 500 grand a season.

The Knights signed Ponga for $700k a season after only playing two games. They took the risk and blew everyone out of the water. The year they bought him the Knights won only 1 game, this year they will play finals football.

We are as undesirable now as the Knights were in 2016.

If the reports are true and we are paying $600k for Leilua next year, $500k for one of the most highly touted young fullbacks in the game seems reasonable to me.

He doesn’t look like the next Ponga to me but I understand what you’re saying my point is more we shouldn’t pay that money if we don’t have to. I don’t see him getting offered that, maybe do a long deal where it’s $300k first year and goes up $100k every season over 4 years.

if there's one thing we all know it's that we will have to pay overs to get him

Yeah for sure would just rather do increases every year so he’s still getting paid a good amount over a long period and we aren’t spending huge money in the first season where he’s still finding his feet

We probably won’t even sign him anyway ?

I would rather take a huge risk with a guy who could be anything than throw money at old or broken down blokes like Reynolds, Packer, McQueen, Proctor. Spend big on the best youth in the game and see what happens. Everything else has failed.

Yeah I agree. If you’re gonna pay overs at least do it on kids who could become stars.

I hope they keep the development System for next season and we sign some more young rep stars. I’ve noticed William kei has been doing a lot of training with our first grade side so I reckon he’ll be one

When you buy a car do you all pay asking price .....

We need to haggle ..half a danari

Anyone who joins WT gets paid extra. We paid McQueen, Mbye etc more than their contract. We have been negotiating on price but pushing the figure up not down. So, consequently we have given ourselves a great opportunity to gather a team of individuals who may not really want to be here.
This appears to be much of the problem Madge and Hartigan have had to work through. It’s a little difficult to now say , hey we want players who want to be here first and foremost, then we can talk about fringe benefits.
Due to management incompetence ,and a desire for quick results , we now have this “pick up the scraps and pay a premium “ embedded into our culture.
I’m one of many who are really disappointed about the direction we have taken post the Tim Sheens era. Sheens was a big fan of grow your own talent and lock them up by treating them well and giving them contracts.
I put it to you, the players are not mentally tough because many of them are here for the wrong reasons.

We need to get deals done quickly ...every time we lose the price goes up

Just let them go. We can't play these games anymore. We can still sign quality players. We signed Matterson and LL.

We've done this as well. We did it with DWZ. It can lead other clubs to paying overs and stuffing themselves like we are stuffed atm.

Billion$ fee a stumbling block Rorters would have space under their Sombrero

Don’t laugh there is every chance the Chooks will have a dash at him. Morris boys have one more season in their legs and they missed out on Bronson X. Typical chook signing and they will get him for half the market price after a game of golf or two

NRL is a complete rort for many clubs. I sometimes wonder why honest clubs even bother to compete.

Christain Welsh this year is playing on an option in his favour with the Storm..by reports was all set to be signed by Parra for this year.. did his ACL so they went cold..so took his option to stay at Melbourne..

Excerpt from this article https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/panthers-give-staines-permission-to-test-market-as-tigers-and-dogs-circle-20200819-p55nbf.html
"Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell has been trying to sign Staines since he was 15 and is also huge admirer of the Forbes Magpies junior. The Bulldogs and Tigers are unsure of who their No.1 will be next season, with Watene-Zelezniak's future at Belmore unclear. The Bulldogs signed Watene-Zelezniak on fullback money after an impressive showing for the club when he joined them from the Panthers midway through last year."

So not chasing him based of 2 NRL games, that were impressive. Not every try was falling over the line

Billy Walters said his contract for 2021 was a player option and he took it up.

Souths also had the option to keep Latrell for next season if they chose and they activated that early in the year

There’s plenty of club and player options around

Need the club to go after Jackson Hastings and Matt Burton. Both goal kickers, defensively strong and great kicking game! Hastings leading the try assists in SL without playing every game. He is quality, and got no fear which is what I like to see in a half!
