Michael Maguire‘s bid to transform perennial underachievers the Wests Tigers has led to a dramatic shake-up of the club’s coaching staff.

Tigers premiership-winning captain and club legend Brett Hodgson is part of the overhaul with the current NRL assistant coach weighing-up whether to stay at the club.

Hodgson isn‘t the only change at Concord with one-time caretaker coach and current assistant to Maguire, Andrew Webster, bound for the minor premiers Penrith as Trent Barrett’s replacement and to work alongside head coach Ivan Cleary.

The Tigers aren‘t alone in their mission to revamp their most important staff with long-serving Dragon Dean Young poised to link with the Cowboys, where with rookie coach Todd Payten, they will form the competition’s most inexperienced coaching staff.

In further changes across the NRL, The Sunday Telegraph can also reveal:

* Incoming St George Illawarra coach Anthony Griffin has made his first senior appointment of key staff for next season.

* Former Bulldogs coach Dean Pay and Broncos caretaker coach Peter Gentle have been linked with a possible move to Cronulla to work alongside John Morris, who is losing Craig Sandercock to Canterbury

* The Knights need a replacement for assistant David Furner after they were hoping to torpedo the Cowboys for Young‘s signature

The Tigers are a major piece of the puzzle with Maguire set to further his decision-making following a Tigers board meeting this week.

Hodgson has been offered – but is yet to accept – a junior pathways coaching role rather than his current NRL assistant position.

Fellow Tigers assistant Shane Millard will remain on as one of Maguire’s support staff with Webster departing for the Panthers.

Young has opted against joining the Knights, who the Dragons face on Sunday afternoon, and instead will work alongside Payten at the Cowboys.

Debunk the Bunker!
NRL: Greg Alexander is making the stand, it's time to get rid of the bunker once and for all.
The Dragons wanted Young to fulfil the final year of his deal and work alongside Griffin but the 2010 premiership winner has decided to move to Townsville to grow his coaching experience.

Young said “the timing is right for me to go and try something different”.

“The club has been great throughout the whole process,” Young said. “I spoke with Anthony Griffin and he was keen to keep me around but I thought it was time to make a change. I’ve been at this great club for the past 20 years as a player and a coach. The opportunity came up to go somewhere else.

“I put my hand up for the (head coaching) job. I didn’t get it. That’s OK. Anthony is going to do a great job.

“I hope he does well and gets the team back to the finals. It was a tough decision.”

His decision comes as Griffin also makes his first senior appointment to his staff for next season.

Griffin has appointed Tony Guilfoyle as his head of high performance. Guilfoyle worked alongside Griffin at Penrith and Brisbane.

Griffin has been finishing prearranged consulting commitments before he ramps up his search for his coaching staff. It is expected he will start discussions with potential coaches this week.

A forgotten member of the coaching realm is ex-Warriors coach Stephen Kearney, who has been sounded out for potential coaching roles.

It is also believed several clubs have made inquiries about off-contact Eels assistant David Kidwell.

Madge also needs to start looking at himself when we leak 50+ points wheh you speak about D all season.

It’s seeming likely. I’m so gutted for him, career best season and really buying into Madge and he’ll miss all of pre season and some of next year. Such a good bloke as well ?

Really not concerned about JAC at this stage.
Another player wanting extra $ when he has not proven himself at a position.
Offer has been on the table but like Mitchell it won;t happen.

Well simple let him play out his contract next year with the storm, all the Media around it think its a formality

Watching Sunderland till I die at the moment. We have a couple of Jack Rodwell's at out club. Players that completely kill the budget, do not get a game and just won't leave.

The person we need most next year is Craig Fitzgibbon (current Roosters defensive coach).

Hynes or Staines at fullback, JAC on the left wing and we have a decent team

JAC's deal comes with stipulations, if he plays at fullback he has to be earning that money - so no dramas with it there. At worst we have a very good winger. Obviously more valuable to get a lethal fullback, so hope he can make that transition - thought I have doubts.

I feel like he wants to come here, but we just don't want to give up who Storm want/they don't want to leave Sydney.

Like a any deal the more chatter the less it will happen.
In reality JAC would rather play at Souths with his mate Mitchell. Happy with Tamou at least on small $.

Storm eye second loan deal to fast-track Addo-Carr move
SMH article of 19 September By Christian Nicolussi
Melbourne are prepared to entertain another 12-month loan deal to fast-track Josh Addo-Carr's move back to Sydney.

As Addo-Carr lined up against his likely future employer on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday evening, The Sun-Herald can reveal the Storm have warmed to the idea of finding a short-term fix to replace the "Fox", rather than hold out hope for a like-for-like replacement.

The Storm have already made it clear they will not release Addo-Carr from the final year of his deal unless they are able to sign a suitable replacement. The talent available for next season is scarce, but improves dramatically in 2022.

Popular Wests Tigers winger David Nofoaluma is at the top of the Storm's wish list, even though Tigers coach Michael Maguire has already gone on record about having no interest in releasing one of his stars.

No chance – there's no way in the world that Dave's leaving," Maguire said earlier this month.

There is nothing stopping Nofoaluma playing for the Storm next year and then returning to the Tigers in 2022 when the club will have freed up plenty of salary cap space with the departures of Josh Reynolds and Russell Packer.

Penrith's Brent Naden is another player who has been discussed by Storm officials. Naden, however, would be seen as a longer-term prospect as a centre or winger.

There has already been contact between Naden's management and the Storm. The youngster is off-contract at the end of next year and any move would give Penrith the freedom to re-sign off-contract outside back Charlie Staines.

The Storm and Tigers took part in the first NRL swap deal this year with Harry Grant and Paul Momirovski.

Grant has been outstanding for the Tigers, gaining valuable first-grade experience for when he returns to the Storm.

There could yet be merit in a swap deal involving the Tigers, Storm and a third or fourth club, depending on which positions each club requires strengthening.

Loan deals could become a permanent fixture in the NRL with the idea warmly received by many clubs, especially this year with no reserve grade competition for fringe players. The system is common in other sports, most notably soccer.

Addo-Carr will be involved in the Origin series and not return for pre-season training until January. It means the Storm are under no pressure to find Addo-Carr a new home and a proper replacement.

Addo-Carr wants to return to Sydney for family reasons and the Storm know there is no point trying to convince him to see out the final year of his deal. The Tigers are keen to give him a shot at fullback.

Storm chief executive Dave Donaghy said this week if an arrangement could not be reached by the end of the regular season next weekend, negotiations would be shelved until after the finals.

Melbourne football manager Frank Ponissi told The Sun-Herald: "We genuinely want to help Josh. We'll look at all options and what we can do for him. We'd certainly be open to discussing another loan deal.''

The Storm thought they were close to signing Alex Johnston from Souths, and would have released their representative winger had Johnston not extended his stay at Redfern.

Melbourne have been based on the Sunshine Coast this season, but are hopeful they can commence their pre-season in Victoria. Should Melbourne remain a COVID-19 hot spot, the preferred option would be to train in a regional area, which would allow the Storm players to return home to their families on the weekend.
