Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

This Suaali kid is clearly a talent but yeesh what club would want to touch him with all those ridiculous clauses he wants in his contract

Kid needs a new manager if he wants to move forward because his current one seems like aj idiot.

Whats also interesting in the article is Souths asking for a development fee to release him a year early. Great idea but good luck with that.

They can’t sign JAC is how I’m reading that.

In 23 days, the hottest collection of NRL talent comes onto the open market, which threatens to split up Penrith’s brilliant young side.

And the Panther piranhas are already circling.

High-flying Penrith are bracing for rival clubs to throw big bucks at their playing roster as they fall victim to their own success.

Canberra look to have already struck the first blow, with the Raiders set to land fullback Caleb Aekins, 22, to a multi-year contract from next season.

While utility Tyrone May is believed to be close to extending his expiring deal, the Panthers have 11 stars with a combined price tag of $5 million coming off contract at the end of next season.

That means rival clubs will, under NRL rules, be free to sign Matt Burton, Kurt Capewell, Stephen Crichton, Mitch Kenny, Jack Hetherington, Brent Naden, Zane Tetevano, Jarome Luai, Spencer Leniu, Isaah Yeo and Josh Mansour from November 1 this year.

Should Penrith go on to win the grand final on October 25, the players may not even have a week to celebrate before being targeted by cashed-up NRL clubs.

While focused on winning this year’s premiership, Panthers officials are aware rival clubs are building war chests to lure the young stars away from the foot of the mountains.

There is no suggestion there will be a mass walkout but the appeal of the Panthers’ playing group — which has already secured a preliminary final spot — is undeniable.

Successful clubs being poached by rivals is, as one official claimed, the “perils of winning and having a salary cap.”

They’ve won the minor premiershjp and now face the challenge of keeping a nearly undefeated team together.
Many players coming off contract are preferring to defer negotiations until after their season concludes, which, based on Penrith’s form, would be the NRL grand final.

“Negotiations are well under way with a number of those players,” Panthers great and club deputy chairman Greg Alexander said. “You could say we have at least 20 players that are playing the best football of their careers.

“Some are only young in terms of their careers but every individual at Penrith is in good form. And that generally means that there are plenty of clubs interested in a lot of the players.

“I’m sure they have enjoyed this season and also know that the future of the club looks pretty good. We are working through a number of those players as we speak.”

Many have come through the Penrith junior systems together and have expressed a desire to continue playing together.

Isaah Yeo has been one of the most improved players in the comp for 2020.
That, however, will be difficult when the NRL’s reduced salary cap for 2021 is negotiated.

Penrith have been attempting to re-sign rookie centre Crichton for the past eight weeks.

Friends say the 20-year-old, who could command around $500,000 a season, may wait until after November to gauge interest from other clubs.

Luai, Naden and Yeo will also command decent money if allowed to enter the open market.

The Panthers received a boost this week when rising winger Charlie Staines, 20, rejected interest from Canterbury to extend his deal until the end of 2023.

The Panthers will have some room to move in their salary cap through skipper James Tamou’s departure to the Wests Tigers.

Crichton could get offered a good $600-$700k a season if he goes on the market. Yeo could ask for good money too but I doubt he leaves Penrith.

Didn't he resign for 4 years already?

There was a rumour about it earlier in the season but sounds like they’re still in negotiations? I doubt he leaves anyway.

This is not related to signing Suaali or JAC but does anyone know how long Justin Pascoe is on leave?

It seems working at the club is on a part time basis for this guy .. even the staff are on retirement contracts just like most of the playing roster!

Recommended a few days ago we should go hard for Suaalii, potentially the biggest NRL prospect we’ve seen in the last decade!

Early comparisons to Greg Inglis and Israel Folau, and looking at his highlights I get a Tom Trobejic vibe with his length and athletic ability

Perfect opportunity to build this club around a star player, we seem to be in a good position with funds and game time opportunities in his preferred position I think we’d be silly to not pull the trigger on this if we could!

Suaali is not worth the risk and is very high maintenance,as for the get out clauses he wants in his contract no matter where he goes he will leave the first time he is unhappy.

A definate no from me

give me Spencer Leniu. him and Stefano would single handedly pummel teams.

Hes a good prospect. Looked good in the limited time he played this year.

It’s called short end of season break mate.
There’s plenty of recruiting staff on deck to carry on with any negotiations,
And if you look in your pocket you’ll find a cell phone. It’s used to talk to people when needed.

Wests Tigers emerge as contender for Joseph Suaalii as Souths end interest
Boom teenager Joseph Suaalii won’t be at Redfern next season despite being offered a stunning four-year deal worth $1.9m — and rivals are circling.

DEAN RITCHIE, EXCLUSIVE, News Corp Australia Sports Newsroom
Wests Tigers have emerged as a shock contender in the messy chase to sign teenage prodigy Joseph Suaalii.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Suaalii, 17, has told Souths he does not want to play at Redfern next season, despite being offered a stunning four-year deal worth $1.9 million.

Suaalii’s incredible demands — and a lack of desire to represent the famous club — has ended Souths’ interest in the young star.
There are even suggestions Suaalii has managed to tick off his other main suitor, Rugby Australia.

Suaalii was shopped to the Sydney Roosters and, while there was interest, it appears he could struggle to be squeezed in under the club’s tight salary cap.

While the Roosters are the masters of managing their cap, Suaalii couldn’t play his favourite position at Bondi — fullback — due to the long-term presence of James Tedesco.

Suaalii could also be used as a running five-eighth but the Roosters have Luke Keary locked down.
Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has a huge opinion of Suaalii, who has a striking running game in both rugby codes — league and union.

Maguire helped a young Suaalii when the pair were at Souths. Wests Tigers would have the money to lodge an attractive offer and Suaalii could play fullback at Concord.

Several well-placed sources told The Daily Telegraph of Maguire’s strong interest in Suaalii. Maguire and Wests Tigers chief Justin Pascoe are away on leave.

The Tigers haven’t lodged any offer or opened formal discussions but the club’s interest in Suaalii is genuine. A deal could be struck from 2022 when the Tigers’ salary cap has settled.

Rumours circulated on Thursday that Suaalii was close to signing with the Roosters. This was however denied by those close to Suaalii, who has a development contract at Souths next year.
Suaalii is now deemed by clubs as being a “hell of an athlete with an attitude that is all over the place.”

Despite their dislike for the Roosters, Souths would be prepared to release Suaalii to Bondi for 2021, provided the Roosters pay the Rabbitohs a development fee.

Suaalii has told Souths officials he does not want to play at the club next season, despite the Rabbitohs having nurtured the sports prodigy since the age of 13
Even Souths coach Wayne Bennett has seemingly run out of patience with Suaalii, while there is confusion over who is actually representing Suaalii.

While Souths would never admit it publicly, Souths believe Suaalii and his family have disrespected their club.
The only way Suaalii could return to Souths would be by attending pre-season training — after putting contract negotiations on hold — and showing a hunger and desire.

Suaalii — still at school next year — wanted clauses inserted into his contract stating he could leave after each year, a request laughed off by Souths. One rival club, watching the Suaalii drama unfold, fear the kid could be lost to both codes.

Any potential clubs would be wary about the stipulations Suaalii could place on his any future contract.

Thats what it says. Article by Dean Ritchie, probably read on a forum somwehere.

He is not allowed to play for us next year, you have to be 18 to play NRL. The dispensation that the NRL agreed to previously only applied to playing in a Souths jersey.

He can't play next year as he will still be 17. The previous dispensation given by the NRL only applies if he is playing for Souths or the Roosters.

I don't think we should sign this young Suali kid on big money at this stage, he won't be first grade ready for a few years yet anyway. If we did sign him now, what's stopping him from up and leaving when in a year or so, just like he's doing now at Souths?

And we don't need potential quality talent in a few years time, we need some quality now, or at least signing a gun for 2022 is a guaranteed quality injection into the club. The risk is too high with this one.

But I'm not worried at all, I don't think we're serious contenders for him, it sounds more to me like our name being attached to him as being interested to put pressure on other deals we are trying to snare. If Souths are playing hardball with this kid and do still genuinely want him, further public interest in him may weaken their secret desire for JAC as they put more into retaining Suali.

How wrong is it also that clubs sink their teeth into a kid from as young as 13? A kid has barely gone through puberty by then, and clubs are already predicting how they will turn out as an adult? It doesn't seem right to me.
