Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

NRL brought in the salary cap to even the playing field but for me it only works for teams they want it to work for.

Quick history revision. The NRL didnt bring in the Salary Cap, the NSWRL did. Secondly they didnt bring in the salary cap to even the playing field. The draft was brought in to even the playing field. The salary cap was brought in in 1990 to stop clubs from sending themselves broke after Canberra did exactly that building their monster side.

A bit of a whisper from Souths, JAC will sign for next season.

The storm have shut down all negotiations until their season is finished, so how exactly could there be any new developments

Doesn't stop the players from talking. I have a nephew at Souths and he seemed fairly convinced when I spoke to him today.

Hope it's wrong as that would be wrong on so many levels...
They have no money to resign AJ but all of a sudden he resigns for 200k less, They have Arrow coming next season and he would not be cheap, They have players as there back up players that most squads would die for to have in starting teams,
2021 players of note for them already signed - LM, AJ, Jai Arrow, Tom Burgess, Damien Cook, Dane Gagai, Cameron Murry, Graham, Adam Reynolds, James Roberts, Jaydn Sua, Cody Walker and all these guys are on very good money yet they can just keep buying quality players. They are the new Roosters and as Toovey says - "There needs to be an investigation"

NRL brought in the salary cap to even the playing field but for me it only works for teams they want it to work for.

Anyway rant over..... Who is our next target for fullback if JAC doesn't come ?

I think Souths want James Roberts gone

That's what I have heard also.. I know we need to focus on our own back yard but its hard when the rich just get richer.. 2022 once we can offload our overpaid player might get a big signing. Fingers crossed

Appreciate your response and understand however I swear I have heard the Todd G, Coaches and media talk about that the cap was designed to spread the talent around.

It wasnt but its the only mechanism left to do so and is of course used that way now.

He is entitled to his money, but now that the whole “great clubman” myth has been exposed

"He is entitled to his money, but now that the whole “great clubman” myth has been exposed'

Why has he been exposed....

Because he doesn't want to move on to England (who would)?
Because he wants the money he is entitles to?
Because he is ready to play any time Madge picks him?
Because he will play any position the clubs wants him to play?

Think you are being a tad harsh on him myself.

Nup...because he clearly isnt wanted by the club, but puts his own financial needs above that.
We will probably be his last paycheck,so most wld do the same...but at the end of the day its still all about him

The one answer to that is - he has a contract.

Everyone jumps up and down because of the Tanker and Sooky Boy not wanting to honour their contracts.
However you jump up and down because Reynolds wants to honour his.

Im just contesting the ridiculous concept of Reynolds being a "clubman",because hes clearly unwanted and decides to stick by his contract which hes legally entitled to do.His other behaviour is incidental, tho again not consistent with "clubman" concept
And because hes unemplyable most wld do the same
He won the lottery..well,Ivans lottery
But hes no clubman..whatever definition you decide

Well he’s had about the most challenging 3 years in footy career you can have, a few years back he plays in the 2014 GF, plays one origin series and wins it, from there he gets shuffled on from Belmorewhere he had a very unique respect amongst fans and players alike.
Never said a bad word about their club from memory.
He’s signed by us and since he has joined us he been in and out of physical rehab, the Del Busso scandal, spent a year and a bit playing reggies and every time he speaks to the media he’s positive about our club, about our coach and our fans.
He’s not kicking stones and when he is picked in the 17 he gives it everything.
Yep I’ll agree he’s on more than what I’d pay, but that’s not his bone to picked at by you or me, it’s Clearys.

Payten driving it

I’d be up for that, but doubt it’s true.

Don’t rate Drinkwater from what I’ve seen. Would be more keen on a Clifford swap

Good to see in the paper that Josh Reynolds has made a few more million on investment properties and has apparently found a new love. Thus no need at all to take up UK SL offers..............

Just our luck.

All jokes aside, but him leaving would have changed our entire club and allowed two really good signings. He is entitled to his money, but now that the whole "great clubman" myth has been exposed it is going to be fairly galling watching him begrudgingly sit on the sidelines for another 12 months collecting his 700-800 grand.

He has been an absolute disastrous signing. By FAR our worst as he is going to ride out the whole four years...at least Blair jumped ship.

thanks ivan

Yep. It is rare that a disastrous signing rides out a long term deal..

Blair left.

Even Bryce Cratwright bailed...!!!

But not our Josh, he is going to ride it out and essentially live off this deal forever with all his properties...which he is perfectly entitled to do.

But wow, it has been a disaster. Absolute disaster.

If he had of taken the UK deals it would have allowed us to go into 2021 with TWO more decent players of need.

I’ve lost all respect for Reynolds. The guy has no integrity and is happy to do nothing for his pay cheque. The club can’t make it any clearer that he isn’t wanted. Yet he is happy to be 18th man , earning $25k a week doing absolutely nothing. Spent more time injured then playing and looks likely to ride out this deal and not go anywhere.

I'd be happy if we could move Josh R along but nothing I've seen from him suggests he's happy being 18th man.

The fact he was signed by the previous coach and doesn't appear to be in the plans of the current coach doesn't mean he's not keen to get on the field. In fact I'd say it's killing him not being able - or picked - to play.

It’s josh Reynolds, all he wants to do is play footy. Madge regularly applauds him for how hard he works at training and Ronnie Palmer called him the fittest at the club. Those aren’t the characteristics of a guy who’s happy to sit on the bench and not play.

Disagree. It does not look like that at all to me. Madge and co say good things about him publicly, like they say good things about Packer, because you have no chance of ever getting another club interested in them if you don't. Even then no other club is interested anyway.

It's been made abundantly clear to both of them that the coach wants them out of the club, it's been made clear by them not being picked very often at all in the run on team.

If all Reynolds wants to do is play footy, then why does he stay at a club where he is clearly not wanted? Where he a lot of the time is not even chosen to play footy? He is on a good wicket with the money he is on, he has no better options, and he's just riding it out. Hard to condemn him, as it it Ivan's fault, but there's certainly no dignity in it. Personally I'll be glad to see both their names off our books.

I don’t think you can blame JRey. He was offered a contract in-good faith and is entitled to it. He may not be what the current coach is looking for but he signed with Cleary who obviously had plans for him. It’s Cleary who let the club, fans and players down - including JRey who aside from money was probably also sold the dream Cleary wanted to build.

It would be interesting to know if Josh had a crystal ball when he signed, would he have taken less money to sign elsewhere?

If we have lost JAC and Hetherington...Burton is not coming also....it is time to look in the mirror and realise we have an issue.

25 years and never landed a single current Roo or current NSW Origin rep. Only club to never land a current one.

Players use us to drive up their value. Then laugh and leave the table.

Even the Dogs can land them....Hetherington added to the big Pom once he has settled and that is a nice pack. We desperately need mongrel and speed....Hetherington and JAC both would have been great. The Pom said both were almost done a month ago...Lattrel was almost done...:Alex Johnson was almost done....

My question is WHY can't we close out deals?

Either way, we are stuck with Josh, Packer and Mbye...

The official cap is 9.5 million...those three staying means we are playing with 7 million vs the rest of the NRL plus their 'contribution'. Mbye at least plays most games, but all three combined contribute probably 500 000 worth to the roster.

So, basically, we are playing with a 7.5 million dollar squad vs fully loaded teams.

NRL outcasts: The 16 unwanted stars stuck in rugby league contract limbo

Matt Moylan’s manager has revealed the current predicament facing his client and 16 other unwanted stars, detailing his blunt dealings with Wests Tigers. See the full list of ‘outcasts’ here.

These are the NRL’s unwanted 16 stars who are up for sale; eight of them State of Origin players and six of them Test footballers on contracts worth more than $10 million.

Poor form, off-field issues and injuries have contributed to them becoming rugby league outcasts.

These are some of the biggest names in the game.

A handful of clubs that might be interested in picking them up on reduced rates are being held back by the uncertainty over the salary cap for next year and beyond.

Also, many clubs are trying to move on their own players before the cap space becomes available to go shopping for the “outcasts”.

The Wests Tigers have let it be known they will contribute substantially if any of their rivals want Josh Reynolds, Moses Mbye or Russell Packer to free up $2.4 million in their cap. Yet there have been no bites.

Matt Moylan’s manager, veteran agent Allan Gainey, has been on the lookout for a new club for months.

The 29-year-old has played only 19 games in the past two years because of injuries.

“I thought there would be a couple of possibilities but every club is in the same situation,” Gainey said.

“They are nearly all trying to move on players before they look at others. Everyone’s on hold.

“There might be a spot at the Wests Tigers for Matt but not until they can move Josh Reynolds or the others they are trying to shop.”

Gainey spoke to Cronulla CEO Dino Mezzatesta about Moylan’s case on Tuesday.

It doesn’t help that Moylan has a reputation from his Penrith days around his commitment.

“I told Dino I’ve been doing my best but nothing’s happening,” Gainey said.

“I’ve pulled out all stops, seriously.

“Look, Matt wants to prove a point. He’s really popular around the group at Cronulla and it would be hard for him to leave but I’ve been trying.”

Cronulla would even contribute $400,000 if there was a taker.

It’s not just Moylan at the Sharks. They started shopping Josh Dugan last season, two years before his contract was up. Andrew Fifita still has two years to run on his contract.

They were all deals coach John Morris inherited from previous coach Shane Flanagan.

Kevvie Walters has the same issues at the Broncos.
NRL OUTCASTS

BRONCOS
- Jack Bird (2021): $975,000
- Matt Lodge (2022): $650,000
- Brodie Croft (2021): $450,000
- Joe Ofahengaue (2022): $500,000

SHARKS
- Matt Moylan (2021) : $850,000
- Josh Dugan (2021) : $850,000
- Andrew Fifita (2022) : $850,000

TIGERS
- Josh Reynolds (2021): $850,000
- Russell Packer (2021): $750,000
- Moses Mbye (2022): $815,000

COWBOYS
- Josh McGuire (2022): $650,000
- Jake Granville (2021) $400,000

RABBITOHS
- James Roberts (2021) $550,000

DRAGONS
- Corey Norman (2021): $850,000

PANTHERS
- Dean Whare (2022): $460,000

ROOSTERS
- Kyle Flanagan (2021): $280,000

Jack Bird is on a ridiculous $975,000 next year. He has played only 17 games in two seasons at the Broncos. Plus Walters want to offload Matt Lodge.

The Cowboys are prepared to release tough middle forward Josh McGuire to St George Illawarra yet they can’t agree on a deal. The Dragons can only squeeze him into the cap if the Cowboys pay half.

Even the opportunities to place players in the UK Super League are no longer there.

“There’s not much happening in England at all,” player agent Steve Gillis said. “It’s the most quiet I’ve ever experienced in these unprecedented times.

“Normally with their promotion and relegation system, things become a bit frantic as clubs try to stay in Super League or climb up from division one.

“This year there’s no promotion and relegation. There’s no urgency to improve their rosters. Plus there’s COVID. A lot of the club are in serious financial trouble from no crowds and sponsorship dwindling.”

One of the common themes of the four preliminary final teams is that they’ve been careful not to throw the type of crazy money at stars that will come back to bite them.

Only James Roberts ($550,000) at the Rabbitohs and Dean Whare ($460,000) at the Panthers make our list.

It was one of Phil Gould’s strengths as general manager of football at the Penrith Panthers to move on unwanted players.

In 2018, Trent Merrin wasn’t justifying his $800,000 price tag at the Panthers.

Gould told him he was no longer required and he left for the UK.

He also convinced veteran five-eighth James Maloney to leave a year early to use his contract money for the next generation of Panthers who have come through so spectacularly this year.

Why keep Maloney with Jarome Luai and Matt Burton banging on the door for first grade?

Ricky Stuart was good at it, too.

There was the famous story in 2007 at Cronulla when Stuart inherited Queensland Origin centre Josh Hannay on a $150,000-a-year contract and halfback Brett Seymour.

Stuart wanted them out, the players wanted their money. To try to force them to go, Hannay was sent back to the park to play A-grade for the Gymea Gorillas. It was a long way from Suncorp Stadium in front of 40,000 fans to Corea Rd Oval in park footy in the Shire.

Seymour was dispatched to the Engadine Dragons.

Eventually they settled on departure packages.

These days it’s much harder and the RLPA wouldn’t allow it to happen.

As one manager said yesterday: “It’s not the players’ fault — it’s the clubs’. They’re now trying to clean up a mess they created themselves.”

For an option writer/columnist that yarn has no opinion. For a journalist it has no research. It’s a PR piece for his club and a manger. Absolutely no fault lies with the managers because that’s where he gets his stories - it’s all the clubs fault. What a moron

I really fail to see why his editor literally falls over himself about Buzz.

Where is the comment on injury riddled players and lack of support, the stories about head knocks and the long term damage they have all this info on, the part where managers have screwed clubs and now it’s coming back to bite them, an investigative piece on the relationship between player, managers, coaches and execs?

Drivel
