Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Decision time people.
You either have a recruitment policy with a set limit price the you consider the player is worth .... that you stick to .... or you allow every two bit manager take advantage and you get into a situation like we have with Packer,, Reynolds a Mbye.
You can’t have it both ways .... so we are at that point with Aloiai.
Nice forward to have .... has much potential but lacks real aggression, real line breaking penetration and only just this season scratched his way to a permanent starting spot and still very inconsistent.
A $650k forward ..... not really.

The problem is how is the club going to signing just an even replacement?

That’s a good point, don’t we now have an analytical team that measures players worth?

Got to trust them that they know what they doing.

If our football team is considered the 11th best in the league, it’s better than our analytics team, which I’d have 15th or 16th. Possibly ahead of the Dragons only.

Why do we even have a recruitment team when this is a legitimate fear. Just let Madge do it.

Whenever Aloiai had a good game he’d follow it up with being a cat. Hugely inconsistent in my opinion

Would love to keep him, but not for the money manly are supposing offering him...if so, good luck to him

If Manly want Alioai at 670k. they can have him. If they want him in 2021 we take their young 5/8 in exchange. And if they want Garner, we take Saab.

Plenty of salary cap to use for 2021 now. Hopefully can get Laurie early and get him into first grade, maybe upgrade a few guys we want to keep too. Maybe we could get lucky and someone half decent becomes available

Honestly I’m still keen on signing Josh McGuire. Think he’d be great for us at lock.

I'm not keen - he is a Dog. I'd like a $1 for every dog shot he has put on players "on the ground"

Maybe I'm not up with the new trend, I don't want to cheer for players of that ilk.

I don't understand how manly can throw big money at him...I know they lost AFB, but they still have dce, kapow and the Turbos

Difference is they are actually quality players on market value

We have Packer, Reynolds and Mbye chewing up our cap on 2-3x what they’re actually worth

Take a good look at the teams who play finals. They have a lot more than 4 stars.

'Cause we don't want another Bus Driver scenario, that's why.

I have never rated Aloiai tbh. I think he has an average work rate and runs hard every 5 runs....middle defense is okay but nothing great. At that sort of money, happy to see him go. Would much rather Billy Magoulias and Peni Terepo at that money (laugh at will but both provide much better value than Aloiai at $670K

We have good young props coming through the grades. Young players perform at higher levels knowing they are in with a chance of winning a Top 30 spot with the departure of a NRL player. It is exciting times and refreshes the squad. Being able to replace from within your juniors without the need to enter a bidding war is smart business. If we can negotiate an early release for Garner and Josh A we may be able to be able to pick up their young 5/8.

Making the eight consistently is smart business.
And I don’t think you can do that without good experienced players

We've signed Tamou perhaps losing Alioai. We also have Stefano.

And Packer! Don’t forget that metre eater Packer, happy days! ?

I hope that Packer is given medical retirement and not because of any perceived benefit to the club, just because it is the correct decision for a person suffering for months. Even though he doesn’t have a long and full history of concussion issues, his current circumstances are exactly that which the game needs to attend to. Boyd Cordner should never be allowed to take the field again, nor have returned in the first origin match, which was disgraceful.

Not enough realism on here. If we choose to let Aloiai go if he’s offered 650k elsewhere, how do we replace him?

It took 800k to get someone like Packer to come here, how much do you think it will cost to get someone of Aloiai’s quality from another team?

If we’re ever going to have a competitive squad we need to hang onto the few good players we have (Nofa, Aloiai etc).

**670k i**s the figure, wish people would stop increasing the figure.

By the times his contract runs out he'll be touted as 950k.

How do you know this?

From ZeroTackle.com:
"Packer is believed to be earning well over $700,000 a season"

Is this figure even close to reality and where is it coming from, as it is probably at or even higher than we were looking at paying JAC?

Exactly.

In a season shortened by Covid 19, Aloiai played 17 games, missing only 2. For the first time in his career, he started at prop in every appearance. Scoring a personal best 3 tries, his stats were much improved on previous seasons. His running metres increased from an average of 94 per game in 2019 to 136 in 2020, and his tackles made and tackles missed were both the best of his career.

You can see how he thinks his value has increased however will he continue to make the same improvement if he changes clubs? It's really up to the club to manage and work out his value if he wants to go to Manly on a bigger contracat i say good luck as i think they would be paying overs.

As another forum member stated lets make finals otherwise current players are under achieving for the team.

I think that he would stay for less, he loves the club. yes he's got a young family and needs to look after himself but $550k is probably value and good enough to keep him.

Manly didn't even make the finals with their squad...

We offered JAC. $600k. Alioai is nowhere near that level. He should take what is on offer. We have good young props in the system.

He’s a grub but he can play, defends very well in the middle, runs the ball well and can ball play from lock. He’s not the player he once was but for a good price hr would be worth it he walks into our starting pack
