Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Storm are playing silly buggers again ..... they want both Moeaki Fotuaika and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui from the Tits for Brandon Smith ..... l:laughing:

Is it to much to ask that Hartigan just deliver Staggs, Brandon Smith and Crichton to us? Centre, Lock and 2nd Row covered. Finals here we come....

It’s crazy because , like in the JAC situation they’ll end up with nothing . It’s a bad tactic IMO.

I just don’t see the need for Mansour, we have Nofa, BJ, Tommy, Momo, AJ, Hoffman,Kei and at a pinch Cini.

Would you take him if it meant getting Laurie early though? Kind of like when the Sharks got Fafita for taking on Gibbs.

No. He would block the progression of one of our younger players, take up a top 30 spot and $. Laurie is on a development contract. To retain him at the Panthers, imo they would need to upgrade him to a NRL spot and contract which would place further pressure on their cap. If they cannot do that, he should be released. We have Mbye.

Totally agree.

I'm excited to have Laurie, but he is still a rookie. He is not tedesco or a proven superstar.

Would rather we are patient for the 12 months if we have to be, than take on Mansour and his terrible contract. That is why penrith are trying to bundle them. Let them struggle with their cap.

And agree, he blocks the progression of the current youngsters.

You negotiate with two contracts. One if he gets a release and one if he doesn't. He signs both contracts. Then you just stay out of it.

Kiwi connection may help Maguire get Smith to Tigers

Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has confirmed the club's interest in Brandon Smith after the Storm forward was given permission earlier this week to test the market.

The joint venture was one of the 14 clubs which received an email on Tuesday indicating Smith was chasing a starting hooker spot for a rival team in 2022 and had been allowed by the Storm to explore his options.

Maguire handed Smith a Test debut for the Kiwis in 2018 with the 24-year-old making the No.9 jersey his own at the international level.

The Tigers have struggled to find consistency in the hooker role since Robbie Farah's retirement in 2019 with Smith a handy option for the club to chase.

Coincidentally, the had a Storm hooker fill the void last season but Harry Grant has returned south of the border with Melbourne stalwart Cameron Smith all but certain to retire.

Brandon Smith is one of the hottest properties on the open market - on Thursday, Kevin Walters said Brisbane planned to take on local rival the Gold Coast in pursuit of him.

Zane Musgrove re-signs with Wests Tigers

"He's a very good hooker, I've got a lot of time for the way he plays the game," Maguire said on Friday.

"He's had a different role down there [in Melbourne] because of the circumstances but the time he's been with myself and the Kiwis he's been excellent.

"He's one of those players everyone wants to play with but his craft around the space is very smart.

"We're very particular with what we're after. We want winners and people who are going to go above and beyond.

"We're about improving and to bring players like that makes us a better team.

Wests Tigers' top five tries of 2020

"That's what it takes to win comps. The salary cap plays a massive part in building yourself to success. We need to make sure we get that right as well."

Maguire's own future at the Wests Tigers was confirmed on Thursday night with the premiership-winning coach extending his contract until the end of 2023.

He is just the second coach to re-sign in the club's 20-year history.

"I'm really pleased and am following a good coach in Tim Sheens," Maguire said.

"When I first walked in you've always got in your sights on wanting to win straight away.

"I haven't changed from that but it takes time sometimes to bring that change on.

"There's been a few different hurdles along the way to get to where we are but I think the organisation is in a really good position now with everyone around the team."

Maguire said he remain committed to juggling his commitments with the Kiwis ahead of the 2021 World Cup and beyond.

"I've got two very supportive teams around me and the NZRL have got a lot of good people over there on the ground doing a lot of great work," he said.

"It's a bit of passion in the background but I'm very focused on what we need to achieve here."

If we're prepared to pay Smith equivalent to a good hooker then play him as a 13 his purchase would strengthen the team. I would not be swapping either of our hookers as they are both very good. A monetary compensation to the Storm is the preferred option.

While I agree about our hookers, and agree that I'd love to have Brandon at 13 here - it just won't happen.

The guy speaks so passionately about the Storm, and his desire to play hooker is the biggest motive for the move I believe. He won't take splitting the hooking role or 13 IMO.

Guess money talks, but doesn't strike me like that kinda guy.

I thought the same of Matterson and Aloiai. Nothing would suprise me with these guys now.

Maybe give Bellyache a call and let him know its a bad tactic. They definitely need advice on how to manage rosters. Imagine how bad it would be if next season they have both JAC and Smith still playing for them. Losers.

You’re a douchebag mate . I disagree with the tactic , as it’s a new tactic , and a new thing in Aus sports ie. asking for a trade package . You’re just butt hurt about the other thread .

He has a point though Strongee. They hold the cards, so they can demand whatever they like. If the other club can't meet their demands they get to hang on to the player for the year they are entitled to under the contract at a lesser value than what they will earn elsewhere.

That's why Melbourne remain competitive and we haven't made the finals in 9 years. A player gets poo face and we let them walk.

I see it as real short term though. When JAC leaves in 12 months and they got nothing for it , is it smart business ? What about Smith leaving as well . I get what you’re saying . But really you’re talking about culture , and a trust that these guys arnt going to go full Matto and Moses and sabotage the season.
I’m not saying let them go for nothing , I’m saying that when your demands are outrageous , it can close off any passage of communication at all .
Like when you buy a car , and its a Toyota hilux , and the guys selling it asks for a million dollars .
Your dismissal off him would be almost to a point of you being offended .
It’s a bad faith proposition. Like asking for Nofa or Talau , when you know how highly the club thinks of them . And not really having a backup proposal .

Name calling is not on and not necessary ...

Argue you point without it..

Thank you..

The problem is we have 3 positions to fill
And must spend 95% of our cap
Obviously there are a number of ways to do this
I am not certain of the cut off dates for signings

So we wait and hope for a superstar
Sign 3 young guys
Or cheap experienced heads
Even a combination of the above

I would hate to be a coach
The back lash they cop and pressure to succeed

I wonder who people think is the better player

Robert Jennings
Josh Mansour
Jordan Rankin
Mwz
Mahe Fonoa
Keith Lulia
Kevin Naiqama

All wingers

Actually that's a terrible list of players
No wonder people expect better

If smith signs and insists with playing hooker then what do Wests tigers do with Liddle and Simpkins? Quandry?

Let Liddle go and play Simpkin off the bench. Smith plus lock when Simpkin comes on.

Sssshhh don’t tell Brandon until he signs.

No he also takes a Top 30 spot and $ which can be utilised on more effective players.

I’ll say it again, if we go into round 1 with Kepoa as our first choice left winger, we’re in trouble. He has not yet earned that position. Neither has Talau really.

I’d say yes to Mansour for 1 year, with another year option in the club’s favour on lowish dollars. If Kepoa and co can outplay him and push him to reserves so be it, but at the moment Mansour is twice the winger that Kepoa or Talau are.

Maybe, but quality players are not available atm and besides you seem to think he is past it, is he, he is a GF winger?
I’ll support the club in what ever move they make, they seem to have an extensive brain’s trust available.

He's a GF winger that was shown up for lack of pace. We don't need another clone. There is no rush to spend the money. A player will become available that better meets our requirements.
