NRL: Warriors coach Nathan Brown has confirmed that star fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will play for the New Zealand club in 2021.

With the futures of some of the NRL’s biggest names and brightest young stars still up in the air heading into the final week before all clubs shut down for the Christmas break, PAUL CRAWLEY tackles 10 burning questions that still need to be sorted out.

1. CAMERON SMITH

I suppose we all should be grateful that this long-running retirement soap opera is finally expected to be settled this week.

But even if Smith produces a last-minute curve ball and decides to play on at a rival club next season, I still can’t see how anyone could justify why this had to drag on for as long as it did.

No one disputes Smith has earned the right to take time to consider his options after such an illustrious career, but the way it played out went beyond a joke and just ended up embarrassing all involved.
2. GARETH WIDDOP/BENJI MARSHALL

This could be a public relations disaster if the Tigers end up handing Widdop a lifeline after pushing Benji out the door.

Right now Widdop’s best chance of securing a start in the NRL next year appears to be at Concord.

Of course, Widdop can return and finish his deal at Warrington, which is probably his most likely option.

FROM OUR PARTNERS

But after arriving back from England to try to sort out some family issues, Widdop is due out of quarantine in coming days and it is understood his agent did have talks with the Tigers last week.

With Billy Walters now reportedly pushing to join his dad at Brisbane, a player of Widdop’s experience could fill a hole at a bargain price.

Would he be a better option than Benji is the big question? Because Benji still can’t find a home, either.

3. JOSH ADDO-CARR

This is another circus that has left a sour taste.

While the “Fox hunt” has gone quiet in recent weeks, the Storm and the Bulldogs both want a decision before the players return in the new year.

Melbourne want Addo-Carr to focus on 2021 while the Dogs need to know if he will be at their club in 2022 or whether they need to spend elsewhere.

Rumours Addo-Carr wants in at Souths just won’t go away even though the Rabbitohs are adamant it won’t happen.

4. BRANDON SMITH

Every club would want this bloke but it appears Smith will end up at either Brisbane or Gold Coast in 2022 because Smith wants to live in southeast Queensland.

Imagine him in the same Titans pack as David Fifita and big Tino Fa’asuamaleaui.

5. STEPHEN CRICHTON

Young Crichton is worth every cent of his reported asking price of $750,000 a season. We’re not only talking about the game’s best young centre but a young superstar more than capable of making the shift to fullback.

While the Dogs would love to land him for 2022 and beyond, it is hard to see the Panthers letting him walk unless if they can’t fit him in a cap that is busting at the seams with so many players wanting an upgrade.

6. MICHAEL JENNINGS

There is still no word when Jennings’ B-sample for his positive drug test result will arrive back.

But if, as expected, the Eels are without Jennings next season they need to find a suitable replacement fast.

No disrespect to Tom Opacic and young Haze Dunster, but neither of them are in Jennings’ league at this point.

Mostly known for his tryscoring prowess, Jennings is also one of the best defensive centres in the game.

7. BOYD CORDNER

The Roosters are keeping this very private and no one holds that against them.

But what is clear is that Cordner will be given as long as he needs to get himself right before he returns from his latest concussion setback.

The Roosters certainly have enough quality forwards to get by if Cordner is not back for the start of the season.

8. COREY ALLAN

Was given permission to see if he could find a long-term deal elsewhere rather than wait behind Latrell Mitchell but so far that opportunity hasn’t arrived.

That said, Souths are happy to keep him on their books for next year if he doesn’t get a chance elsewhere.

9. JOSH MANSOUR

The Tigers are set to offer David Nofolauma an extension and if they get Mansour that would complete a pretty fair backline.

Although it raises another question as to where Tommy Talau would fit into the picture given Joey Leilua and James Roberts will be starting centres.

10. MATT BURTON/DAINE LAURIE

The Bulldogs are desperate to get Burton for next season and the same goes for Tigers who want Laurie to play fullback, but the Panthers are playing hardball with both.

Lodge, 25, is on a contract worth up to $800,000 a year.

Am I the only one gob-smacked that Lodge is on $800,000? His manager is a genius.

Is it really possible that he is on that amount ? A fair salary would be 1/2 that at best.

10. MATT BURTON/DAINE LAURIE

The Bulldogs are desperate to get Burton for next season and the same goes for Tigers who want Laurie to play fullback, but the Panthers are playing hardball with both.

Walters unsure if Broncos would take someone that can't play until later in the season, Widdop not a smart move best football was a few seasons back so can't see that happening.

Mansour unsure why name keeps getting floated around hear originally wanted a 3 year deal, easy decision NO.

Priority get Nofo signed now and keep some cap space to retain younger players and reward them.

If we don't stay loyal and start rewarding some our good juniors ie: Talau, Kepaoa, Kei, Cini and co.. we run the risk of losing these quality players and they will become regular 1st graders with other clubs. The problem with that is .. why would any other junior want come to us if they cant make grade through the ranks and end up having to our club to find a 1st grade spot somewhere else .. !!

We would be regarded by all new juniors as a feeder club to the successful clubs .. !!

Yes i hear a lot of people already saying .. but they are to young and wouldn't cut it in the top grade .. trust me, if you are good enough .. you are old enough .. and if we don't try them in the top grade .. they will never be able to cut it in the top grade .. give them a shot, or risk the possibility of them leaving to greener pastures .. !!

Completely agree, considering the standard of some of the players especially our lack of speed i can see plenty of opportunities.Yes we need to buy some class backs but give the young guys a go,its no use having a develoment squad without pathways.

This is I think why there is little chance of us signing Mansour. Would make zero sense. For mine its a no brainer to use Kepaoa and Talau, at least on the left wing after blooding them both last year.

Maybe, but are they under contract?

With respect, but juniors come through every year, we cant keep them all.

I will say though , I was quick to bag him , considering I assumed the article was about us not signing Nofa yet , but he does have a point regarding Benji and Widdop . IF and that’s a big IF , we did nab Widdop , a lot of supporters , who lets say , arnt as tuned in as the people on here , will go bananas . Look I’d be ok with benji running around in CC cup , and acting as a halves coach to first grade , and a poo hits the fan , replacement .
In fact I think he would excel in that position . What I’m not ok with , is inevitably him signing , and the crawleys of the world writing articles saying how badly we are mistreating a club legend by banishing him to CC cup . Which is why I’d be ok with Widdop . Because we have no loyalty or history to him , and AD will be the first choice 6 , and if he plays well, the long term 6 .

Widdop also has the ability to play FB, a goal kicker and 4yrs younger than Benji as well. Not arguing a case either way but seems he has enough to offer.

Not having a go at you 🙂 but the decision has been made and the umbilical cord cut.
Most will always love Benji and the joy of 2005. I still enjoy having a few and reliving the night - I snuck into the Members Stand to watch it (with the help of some diehard Eels fans who had been doing it for years.)
As has been pointed out, Widdop is younger and can cover positions we are a little light on. Although I would prefer we spend the money elsewhere, Widdop could have more upside than Benji.
Getting Benji back would be a massive backdown and backwards step.

The problem with Marshall is he's a massive distraction. He's on TV, he's interviewed all the time. He's everywhere. And if he's in the top 30, he'll expect to play and it will put unnecessary pressure on people like AD who are trying to make the position their own. Also, we didn't do the dirty on him at all, we gave him a great go and then his contract came to an end and we didn't re-sign him. As far as i'm concerned we owe him nothing

Widdop keeps a low profile and would be, in my opinion, a more handy back up because he can play 1,6,7 and kick goals.

No thanks. Another footballer looking for a retirement package. We've learnt nothing from Reynolds if Widdop is being considered.
