Wests Tigers sign Tukimihia Simpkins

Wests Tigers have today confirmed the signing of promising young forward Tukimihia Simpkins, effective immediately, after he was granted a release from the final year of his contract with the North Queensland Cowboys.

“Tuki” Simpkins has signed a three-year contract with the club that will see him feature in Wests Tigers colours until at least the end of the 2023 NRL season.

In addition to the signing of Simpkins, Wests Tigers have confirmed that Kane Bradley has been released from the final year of his contract to join another club.

Standing at 192cm and topping the scales at 105kg, the 19-year-old edge forward is viewed as a rising prospect in rugby league having transitioning from rugby union in Rotorua. Simpkins was initially spotted at the 2016 New Zealand U/15 Rugby League National Championships and has spent the last 12 months in the North Queensland system.

Wests Tigers General Manager – Football Adam Hartigan expressed his delight to secure Simpkins on a long-term contract.

“Tuki is clearly an exceptional talent and we’re very excited to see him play his football in a Wests Tigers jersey moving forward,” Hartigan said.

“Tuki will add a lot to our forward pack over the coming years, and adds to the already talented young squad we’re building for the future of Wests Tigers.”

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe welcomed Simpkins to the club and thanked Bradley for his service over the past two years.

“On behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to welcome Tuki to the club and say how pleased we are to have secured his services long-term,” Pascoe said.

“As a club, we’re all looking forward to watching him take next steps in his development in a Wests Tigers jersey.

“I’d also like to thank Kane for his efforts since joining Wests Tigers in 2019,” Pascoe said. “He is a fine young man, and we wish him all the best in the next steps of his career.”

Simpkins will join his new Wests Tigers teammates when training resumes on Thursday.

That’s some quality business. Picking up a very highly rated kid (rugby schoolboy standout) in a position we need, and moving on someone who’s not in our future plans. Well done WT

Another impressive offseason move by the Tigers.
Tuki could be a gun if we can get his head right.

Letting Bradley go and put Simpkin is another bonus, still a few spots left.

Well done again WT!!

I know nothing about Simpkins other than he comes very highly rated. Some of the young talent on the books now certainly does get you excited.

Am I right in thinking that with Bradley now gone we still have 3 spots to fill?

With the strife going on at the Knights what would people think of going after Fitzgibbons if he comes on the market? Apparently he is not happy with Pearce, who looks to be staying (has the club’s backing via Buderus statement). Pretty good 2nd rower.

I know I will be severely in the minority here, but I think Jack bird will actually have a pretty good season down in the gong. I think he has 1 or two seasons of really good footy left in him and now would be the time to let rip. I don't think he could have worked with our roster but I reckon come this time next year there will be a few people on here suggesting we throw good money at him. Anyway just speculation for speculation sake

You do realise that he has reportedly major arthritic problems which makes him unlikely to be of any realistic benefit to a club on the field?

I did not actually, that could be an issue. As I said, I don't think his body has too much more to give but he looked in really good shape before he went down in the preseason, it's a real shame, I've always like his style of play and think he's got buckets of talent. I guess sometimes things just don't pan out.

Club website indicates we have 28 in our top 30 unless I miscounted

Tuki Simpkins is a young backrower 6ft 4in and 105 kgs. I believe that he is almost 20 years old.
