![alt text](Stephen Crichton’s contract standoff costs Penrith a pretty penny
Many thought Stephen Crichton was crazy to walk away from a $500K handshake deal, but the move is about to pay off big time.

The NRL’s next millionaire could be made this week with the Penrith Panthers set to table a deal that will make Stephen Crichton rugby league’s richest centre.

Crichton will be offered a $10,000-a-game upgrade to his existing contract as part of a new deal that is expected to be worth $2.25 million over three years.

Hoping to end the contract saga that began with a revelation that “the next big thing” reneged on a $500,000 handshake deal, the Panthers confirmed that a revised contract had been finalised and would be put to Crichton as early as this week.

“It has been a bit of a process since the grand final but we are almost there,” Penrith coach Ivan Cleary (inset) said.

“It (managing the roster) has been a challenge for us after a successful year that came as a bit of a surprise, but we are confident that he won’t be going anywhere.”

It is understood the $2.25 million will include a $250,000 upgrade to his current contract which is set to expire at the end of this year.

The $750,000-a-year deal will leapfrog Crichton over Roosters powerhouse Joey Manu ($700,000) as the NRL’s highest-paid full-time centre in a stunning achievement for a 20-year-old who has played just 26 NRL games.

The Panthers are confident the new deal will be enough to fend off interest from a long line of rival clubs, led by the cashed-up Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Chuck 800 on the table

And a 4 year deal

Or we could just stay away from him and get ourselves a backrower for the same money ....

Angus will stay at the rorters

Who else is available in the back row that's worth that sought of money?

Lots of them .....none available now

But BJ and Jet are going to make the best centre pairing since Meninga and Rodgers ...why replace them

Lol

Would love a great 2nd rower to rotate with LL and Blore though

And Crichton could be our fullback with Laurie five eight so money not wasted

Although he has proven himself as a fullback

I don't believe second row is a priority in the clubs eyes at the present time.

It should be .....you' have to question the club's motive's if it isn't

They are very impressed with Blore and expect him to have a breakout year in 21, there is also a belief that the club hurt Garners form in 2020.

Nothing against Garner ...but how many other club's sides would he make their Top 17

He isn't a starting backrower

The plan is that he won't be, I'm interested to see if there is an improvement in his form if he is moved back to play along side Brooks.

How many years do we give MCK ...Garner ....Seyfarth

Lets do a comparison Roosters : Flanagan from their last game until he signs with Dogs is 12 days from memory

They identify he isn't what they need and is gone

We have seen the MCK's ,Garner aren't what the club needs ...but they are still here 2-3 seasons later

I'm betting a bloke like Liddle wouldn't still be at the Roosters

We aren't thinking like the champions are ...and it blatantly shows

Clubs will have 30 signed players and only 17 of them will be playing in the NRL at any one time in every team in the comp, you cant afford to not have depth.

On Garner, I think it will his play to lose his NRL position. I agree, we have some great blokes coming up, but they have to knock him off from his starting 17 position, IMO.

I'm actually excited about the potential of these two, more than anything else.
That Jet highlights package someone shared (vs Roosters) was sooo very pretty to watch and we already know how good Leilua can be. Hope we can get both back to their best form.
I'm a fan of young Talau and thought his transition to first grade was good so I'm therefore also a fan of putting our money where it's needed.

I have more faith in Jimmy turning it up than BJ. Don’t get me wrong Leilua can be lethal but he has been rocks and diamonds pretty much his entire Rl career and a 6 month strict diet and training plan will not fix that.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t get baited and fall back into bad habits. Because I reckon every opposition team comes with a game plan to niggle him

He will be a lot better than last year but I reckon he will still fall short of some people’s expectations. I hope I’m wrong and he is consistent all year but it’s just a gut feel

BJ is off-contract at the end of this year though. He has plenty of incentive to have a great season if he still wants to play in the NRL. IMO he will get back to his best this year. Would love to see it.

He did the same thing at Canberra, struggled in his first year then got really fit and was Dally M Centre of the year the year after. Hopefully he can replicate that but not holding my breath either

Also having a playmaker give him early ball without running him out of room will help same with the jet if the blokes inside them are crabbing and not giving them room any centre will have problems

Been happening for the last 3 years now, our centres getting jammed up, shouldn't be an issue this year though

Players like MCK, Garner, Seyfarth are middle of the road, you need a few but a team of them will come 9th to 12th. Yes they need to be replaced but unless you replace them with better players, that are available, for around the same $$$$ then you run the risk of slipping below 12th.

Madge and hartigan have let plenty of dead weight go and will continue to do so.

Madge and hartigan have let plenty of dead weight go and will continue to do so.

Took the Roosters 12 days is my point ....you work out they aren't keepers and flick them

Look at how quick Melbourne got rid of Brodie Croft

Sounds awful ...but thats what the top clubs do

Madge and hartigan have cleared out plenty of dead wood and will continue to do so. No way MCK is kept on after this year same as a few other guys. Plenty of young fellas signed up ready to make their Mark and earn a top 30 spot down the line too. It just takes time

Took the Roosters 12 days is my point ....you work out they aren't keepers and flick them

Look at how quick Melbourne got rid of Brodie Croft

Sounds awful ...but thats what the top clubs do

Croft was at Melbourne for 4 years...:flushed:

When he finally was given his main role of replacing Cronk ....and failed ....gone ...true ??

If they have a contract you can't just flisk them unless someone else wants them. The Dogs wanted Flanagan, no-one wants MCK or Garner.

So your saying don't go to Garage Sales or the Bargain Bin to recruit NRL players in the beginning ??

Manly wanted Garner..

Don't ask we why ,but i think Garner will have an exceptional year, reminds me of Menzies running style.Obviously has to improve though to stay in the squad.

I agree but it's not always easy to flick the duds. Best way is to be ruthless and tell them they won't be playing anymore but then you can't expect much loyalty in return from players either. Only guy we desperately need to boot is Mbye and I'm sure they've let him know he can look around

Took the Roosters 12 days is my point ....you work out they aren't keepers and flick them

Look at how quick Melbourne got rid of Brodie Croft

Sounds awful ...but thats what the top clubs do

Croft was at Melbourne for 4 years...:flushed:

Don't ask we why ,but i think Garner will have an exceptional year, reminds me of Menzies running style.Obviously has to improve though to stay in the squad.

No he won't
