Nearly.....

On paper, weve got a better lineup than Dragons and Dogs only, who are both destined for long seasons...
BUT,weve got a lot of young(and some not so young) guys who hopefully are now finally fully fit and ready to peak, and primed for a significant lift in their performance from previous years, which maybe get us midfield at the end of the year if the spine unusually doesnt suffer many injury issues
But sadly no superstars with the cllass to continually threaten the opposition like Mitchell in the Charity Shield tonite,or Harry most of last year...or even JAC
But we have to start somewhere, and its Madges team now to get us rising on the ladder to our rightful postion...9th!

There's a lot of optimism on this forum this preseason but I don't really see it. I like what Madge is doing in well priced athletic young players everywhere but we'd have one of the worst rosters in the league. Not bad players, most would make NRL squads, but no elite talent anywhere. Madge has cleaned the squad out a fair bit and I expect more short term pain for all that. I hope the new players work out and doueihi and mbye moving positions again, but there's really nothing yet to suggest we're competitive this year. I think next year is when I expect us to compete. This year anything above 12th would be a pretty good job by Madge. Again, I think we're doing the right things it is just going to take more time overcoming cleary's squad so I'm hoping the right players show promise this year and we're finally able to recruit quality players with money to spend to start lifting this team. For your own wellbeing, I'd encourage you just to look at the other NRL teams and think objectively about how many of our players would add much to other teams. I only really think brooks, twal, nofo, tamou, Luciano would attract much interest from other clubs. Maybe I'm forgetting 1 or 2 but most teams have better lineups.

You're not wrong in your assessment, however there's now an unpredictability with the game's current format - which the hard workers/defenders and most creative and athletic players are reaping the rewards from. But most importantly it's like that old cliche, teamwork makes the dream work. It's a collective effort.
Though there's still no topline signing we've gained certain players who suit us(and where we are in our rebuild) but have the sufficient experience and skills that can help us perform quite capably.

The one thing I've noticed about the current game is that a spine and how they gel with each other and use or work with their teammates is essentially what separates the top performing teams from the bottom. It's the quick thinking of their key players and the cohesiveness and competitiveness of those teams that is the real x factor.
I guess I'm saying that while there are some teams clearly a level above the rest, anyone who plays strongly as a unit or to their strengths also has a chance. It's how they turn up on the day.
I believe as a team that's been down in the dumps for such an extensive period we've always been able to punch above our weight. The overall strength, skill and experience was always uneven and affected the team's consistency. But we've somewhat rectified this.

Most of us are just excited at the prospect that if we play to our strengths, we can give the comp a real shake up. We know where we are realistically but if everyone can fire up and play at their best, there's nothing but ourselves that can stop us from matching it with the top teams.

Dylan Edwards has had one ordinary game in this Eels trial. I reckon we have gotten the better end of the deal in signing Daine Laurie. Panthers have prioritised the wrong bloke.

He looked alright to me. Did his job and grabbed himself a try, when you've got two halves and a Hooker who are attacking weapons he doesn't need to be a flashy fullback but he does his job makes good metres and backs up well

Laurie is probably better for us because he provides more spark but edwards fits that team perfectly. Just my opinion anyway, keen to see how Laurie develops with us

Yeah look agree. It was just my opinion that Laurie will work out to be the better player, more explosive. Could be completely wrong but I think we are on a winner.

I think he could end up being very good for us. Hopefully we can find his feet in first grade and become a star for us

On paper I think it's one of the best looking teams. Their spine is super strong, their forwards are strong and they've got quality in the backline still I think. Johnston scores tries for fun, Graham is a young talent, Mansour is a consistent enough performer, gagai is the one who's a bit hot and cold

Yeh Souths are absolutely stacked this year. A grand final would be their minimum expectation.

But who do you go for in a Souths Penrith grand final
?

NETFLIXS ???

If you look back over the years. Teams with a settled specialist player at fullback have been most successful. Well in fact that applies to most of the spine. But I believe fullback is one of the most influential positions. Tigers haven’t yet survived the loss of Tedesco. Let’s hope Laurie can grow to be a career fullback at our club.

Harry Grant may have played his last game of the 2021 season .. they say its a medial ligament tear but there are fears that it maybe worse than first thought .. scans will reveal the true damage on Monday. Gotta feel for him .. finally gets his chance and maybe over in a trial game.

Geez it’s a trial and you haven’t even seen Laurie at fullback yet. Some people have massive rose colored glasses.

Have a go champ. A dropped ball is a dropped ball. Get back under your rock...

Let me guess .....Laurie is the next Tedesco ...Garry Jack ......Billy Slater .....

Or maybe the next Cody Walker?

Hell play again. MCL injuries don't normally keep you out an entire season, Bellamy said probably 3-4 weeks but could be a little more.

If clubs need 28 contracted players in their top 30 by the 1st of March does that mean we can expect either a signing or someone getting promoted today?

Although I agree with this post ..... “worst roster” should not be part of the narrative.
In my assessment We are still a mid table side which will struggle because our spine is not settled, no established goal kicker and we are lacking in back row/ lock quality & experienced player.
There are more questions than answers about this side and that is not a good look.
But saying that I have hopes and am looking for improvement on last years efforts and that eventuates than we are just couple of good players away from the finals.

Don’t hold your breath on Gebbie. My inside mail is he is really flighty

Care to elaborate? Flighty as in he got homesick during a global pandemic? Hardly makes him 'flighty'.

And, respectfully, your "inside mail" said Hastings was signed / done / complete / 2 year deal...weeks ago now.

He's got more right than most people on this forum. Can't be perfect unfortunately

Yes, I am not doubting him. Just that I think a fair few people have branded Gebbie unfairly. He speaks little English, got caught out like millions by Covvidd, was not part of Souths bubble...and left.

Perhaps Everything WT could update us on Hastings also?

I am not doubting him...but he said "signed". As in it was done.

Now, if you know anything about the super league, players can't simply "sign" elsewhere as transfer fees are a factor over there. So, I am puzzled as to how Hastings has 'signed'.

Gebbie is probably not gonna be a guy that plays a lot of first grade. He's got some talent but unfortunately since he's from PNG he hasn't had the pathways of other players from Australia

As for Hastings we will have to wait and see. Clearly there is some discussions happening between him and the club. No need to be passive aggressive otherwise people won't want to post any rumours they hear

Those discussions have stopped, at least at the present moment.

Rumour on LU that Bulldogs are after MCK. I wouldnt blame him if he left or wanted to leave because he is unlikely to get much game time here, but 2nd row is where we have the least depth and he isnt on much so I dont see what we gain by letting him go?

He definitely wouldn't be let go this season given how thin we are at 2nd row. However if we can upgrade at some point, its cya later....

Of course he’d be let go if he had an opportunity somewhere else. He’ll be low in the pecking order this year. Which he should always have been, but given lack of quality, players like him get a lot of game time.

MCK - Think everyone is forgetting that he is more an impact bench player that can fill many different positions and has won us a few games at the back end, that's his role.

This will also be his 6th season with us, actually is one of the longest WT players along with Brooks. I actually don't mind retaining him if playing as a utility and quality depth.
