We'd have a player over which won't effect 2022. If we release him and we need him then 2022 is gone as well - see the difference?

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding but I think you're saying having Mbye on our books for 2022 wouldn't have any impact? You know we're paying him a reported $950k a year, right? Other players on $950k or less for 2022 include: Jake Trbojevic, Damien Cook, Lattrell Mitchell, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Jahrome Hughes, Jarome Luai...

If we'd had a spare $950k floating around we could in theory have offered Mitchell AND JAC so much money they couldn't possibly have turned us down.

All hope is lost.
We'll have Uncle Charlie forever.

Plus what are you talking about...we've signed Hastings. Locked in replacement.

Hastings becomes direct replacement for Mmbye run with 7 Hastings 6 Brooks
have both hookers on bench I guess

It would also be as crazy as not swapping Talau for JAC

Even that can be justified on the basis of relative salaries. If JAC is ok value at $600k and Talau is a bargain at $200k you're arguably better off with the latter.

Keeping a bench utility on $900k a year that you've been shopping round for months because you think (almost certainly wrongly, and on the basis of the outcome of one game) that he might help you scramble up to eighth would be about the worst roster move in the history of the comp.

I would much prefer JAC at $600k than Talau at $200k

I’d much prefer talau tbh, I think he can cover wing centre and if really desperate he could play in the second row. With JAC he can play wing but wanted fullback and that’s it. Talau offers more IMO. I think the biggest thing with JAC is he offers a big personality which the club is really missing, it seems stupid to say but a big personality can really make a team gel and pick players up when things aren’t going the way they want them too

Fair enough. I think JAC is the best winger in the comp. At this stage I think Talau is an average centre and a below average winger.

I agree, a thing to consider is - What if Talau does not want to go to Melbourne? We are all full of hate for our players that signed elsewhere without our agreement (Tedesdco, Papanhuyzen, N Brown, Woods, Koroibete etc). It is hypocritical that we insist on a player loyalty , and than sell him against his will, when we feel like it.

Tommy Talau has been forced to fill in on the wing due to lack of wingers. Despite that when asked to finish he does, as he did against the Knights. We know right centre is his position but until one or two wingers are promoted he'll have to do his best. I don't believe he deserves the criticism he gets on the forum.

Sorry mate, i like many of your posts, but we hang on to duds for toooo long. We need to be tougher, good sides move on players that don't perform. Both Cini and TT are nice kids, but lack speed and football IQ.

Hating players for improving their game, or their money is the thinking of a fool. Loyalty is now the stuff of dreams.
And i doubt Melbourne would be interested

I'm beginning to worry about Talau as a long term prospect. There's been the odd glimpse but he hasn't done anything where I've been taken aback by his abilities. For a player Marshall said was the best prospect he's seen since Tedesco he hasn't exactly delivered.

Benji also said a while ago that his brother was a far better player than himself......

Benji says every rookie at the club is the best at something or other. Good on him for boosting their confidence but can't take his word too serious in that department ?

Peter Sterling said Hynes could be the buy of the year.
But what does Sterlo know compared to the illuminati on here.

I think it's way to early to write off Cini after 2 games of first grade, he still hasn't played a game at his preferred position of centre either. Talau made some nice runs in the Newcastle game and like Cini is playing in another position.

Sounded like the Broncos would like him.

We should make this happen.

**I urge everyone to watch his sit down / face to face with Matty Johns**

Why?

Why do we all of a sudden decide to buy players based on podcasts or interviews?

It made me appreciate his character a lot more.
It was interesting, insightful and inspiring.

If you're a footy fan like MYSELF, it's one of the good success stories of rugby league.

* Not to mention is as a great player.
Can play anywhere and always looks like likely.
He's better than almost all our backs.
I like him at centre for us.

Tall, fast, safe, creative and good finisher.

I was against him a couple of weeks ago but Im warming to him. The problem for me is that we have bought Laurie for FB. IMO Hynes is too small for centre or 5/8. Would be good at 1

Hynes to small for centre or five eight, you must have him confused with someone else, he is plenty big enough at 188cm and 90kg

These Brooks supporters want no one who might eventually replace him.

Yes Hynes could play 7, said it himself recently.

So this has now turned to a Brooks' thread?

Laurie is better than Hynes at fullback, Doueihi is better than Hynes at centre and 5/8. Both of these players don't have Hughes Munster, JAC, Smith, Papenhuyzen and Grant in their team.

If you think Laurie is better than Hynes at FB you have not been watching the games. Hynes at this stage has it all.

Laurie at this stage has speed and can take a bomb. His defence, putting it mildly is atrocious, does not link up very often, goes himself at every opportunity, does not st up anybody else etc.

And..... I am not convinced he is doing a good job of setting the defensive line.

Hynes eats him as a FB and would be a good centre alongside Gildart.

His defence can improve but that can be taught. He has done well this year considering it is his first full year at a new club with a team which has been badly beaten most weekends. Laurie has been involved in quite a few tries Including the Leilua no try and it was the Deouihi or Nofoaluma try. Hynes lacks what very good fullbacks have and cannot be taught, that is pace. He doesn't appear to be a finisher at all yet Talau who does finish well gets hammered on this forum.

Gildart hasn't played a game yet in the NRL yet you are confident his defence will be adequate?

PS The Storm have had a long line of outstanding fullbacks,- Slater, Munster, Hughes, Papenhuyzen. And guess what, Hynes is not one of them.

Simple question - would Laurie have been slotted into the FB position by Bellamy instead of Slater, Munster and Paps (don't rate Hughes as a FB) ?

If the answer is no ......

Anyone that is a reasonable first grade FB can finish off a try - how many players can set them up on a continuous basis? Hynes can!

How about finishing off a try over long distance? Hynes don't think so. Hughes can of course, but you don't rate him.

Think I would rather have a FB set up 5-6 tries than score a long distance try himself. I said I do not rate Hughes as a FB.

I think most of your opinions are spot on Paws but I do think you place a tad to much importance on speed for just about every player you talk about. Speed is probably a bit more important under these rules unfortunately. V'Landys imo is ruining the game with these 6 agains etc. etc. We are just going to breed speedy squibs and see the game turn into a 13 man 7's style competition.
He has just about taken good defence and good hits out of the game. Oh! well, at my age I won't be watching the game much longer and that is a plus the way the game is going.
