Mahe Fonua….

At age 19 in 2012 made his NRL debut round 23 for the Melbourne Storm. He spent the following 2 seasons as a regular in the Storm team, the very team recognised as the best of the last 10 years. (As much as we all hate them). He then moved to super league where in consecutive years he was named in the Super League team of the year. He currently played strongly in a test againat New Zealand. 2 missed tackles while in a retreating defence on Johnson and RTS were his blemishes. Both tackles no one would have made under those circumstances against those to players with brilliant footwork.

Now im not advocating Mahe as a great defender, that is yet to be determined IMO, time will tell, but i wont judge him on those 2 missed tackles against NZ for reasons stated above. However, the above pedigree puts him well in front of Kev as long as he does everything asked of him this preseason.

The difference is, in the past we would say this player cant do this or that but we had no one within the grades that could .
Now we have competition for most positions.

Season hasn't even started and we are already bagging our own.

It's still a good debate.
With positions in the centres and wing up yet to be determined.
So many new players, So many players played there first season in NRL last year. Some still playing League now RLWC after a full NRL season, other back at the club doing pre-season training.
The only common link they all have is, This will be the first Pre-season anyone has done under Cleary at the WestsTigers.

2016 depth options: Nathan Milone, Kyle Lovett, Jack Littlejohn, Jordan Rankin.
2018 depth options: Mahe Fonua, Robbie Rochow, Benji Marshall, Malakai Watene-Zelezniak.

The only reason Kevie boy is still at the club is he could not get a better offer.. the club has been shopping him around for ages ,this puts in perspective where he rates in the pecking order.

Then they should have said Ta Ta,,like Edwards, Lovett, Idris, J Grant etc

Would then make sense to give a younger prospect a go or hunt for another outside back..

I think it's pretty safe to say to say that we won't be seeing the 1 year contract players (Kev and Grant) in Tigers colours next season. Maybe, just filling the roster while we wait for someone better to come onto the market.

I was under the impression he was contracted for next season , did not realise he was given another contract.

No where near my team

1\. Suli a must in the centres
2\. kevvie in NSW cup
3.Aloiai a must in the second row ( 2018 is his year to shine)
4\. We dont need 2 hookers in the 17.
5.Rochow in NSW cup

Agreed on all fronts except #4… Neither of our DH can be effective for the full 80min without a break.

His contract was up - why did they need to shop him. "We are not renewing your contract" is all the Tigers management needed to say.

Therefore they must have thought this guy is a keeper and they did.

That's right his contract was up last year and we offered him a new one year contract

I really think a player like Kev is great to have around the club. He's seems a jovial and inspiring type of bloke and he will be good for team morale. I know he's not the most talented player to have in our backline, but he can sometimes do remarkable things on the field (albeit not often enough) and you know he will always give 100% for the team. His experience from the World Cup will also be a benefit. Defence, his biggest weakness, improved a fair bit under Cleary at the back end of last season, as has the defensive structure of the whole team.

All that said, I don't have Kev in my top 17 for the start of the year, but I am happy that we still have him around. Having a player of Kev's ability come in as a replacement for an injured winger/centre/fullback is a good position for us to be in, certainly compared to previous seasons when second rowers or inexperienced youngsters were all we had to fill when a player went down. I've no doubt he will play some first grade with us next season, even if he isn't there all the time and I'm not upset about that.
