Hartigan and Co obviously have a system in place which value players, hence preventing the mistakes of recent past.

HOWEVER, we're not the Roosters and our recruitment valuations need to be modified to reflect where we're at as a club. We're not a destination club.

So, instead of valuing a player as a proportion of the entire cap (EG 10mil), the Tigers need to quarantine a portion of our cap for marquee Signing(s) top ups - say $1mil.

You've got no choice but to pay overs on a few players to turn the tide - and obviously the key is choosing the right player(s) to do so.

Point is, you can still afford to pay overs provided it's part of a concerted effort to manage the entire cap.

Cleary's contract management didn't work but neither is our current approach.

Hartigan and Co obviously have a system in place which value players, hence preventing the mistakes of recent past.

HOWEVER, we're not the Roosters and our recruitment valuation need to be modified to reflect where we're at as a club. We're not a destination club.

So, instead of valuing a player as a proportion of the entire cap (EG 10mil), the Tigers need to quarantine a portion of our cap for marquee Signing(s) - say $1mil.

You've got no choice but to pay overs on a few players to turn the tide - and obviously the key is choosing the right player(s) to do so.

Point is, you can still afford to pay overs provided it's part of a concerted effort to manage the cap.

Cleary's contract management didn't work but neither is our current approach.

That is pretty much the plan atm, by paying the right value for the majority of players, getting a couple on contracts below their value, Laurie is on a deal well below the value he adds to the team. It allows you to go into the market place and pay more for the right marquee player. We haven't got the second part over the line at this point.

Ok but it's always subjective who are the "right players". So if we all agree it's prudent to set values on players, then "splurge" at the right time, who is making the call on when to splurge? It is the people who are already setting values on players. So it's a circular argument.
