The Mole: International prop James Gavet to boost finals bound NRL club

By The Mole

Journeyman prop James Gavet could be a late X-factor for one of the NRL teams in the finals race.

A fearsome front-rower who played for the Tigers, Bulldogs, Warriors, Knights and Broncos, hard-hitting Gavet has been playing for English club Huddersfield for the past two seasons.
But the 31-year-old has made the snap decision to return home for personal reasons and is hoping to find a club before the August 1 transfer deadline.
A Samoan international with nearly 100 top grade games to his name, Gavet had been in good form in Super League and would be a handy addition to a club that has lost forwards through injury for the finals.

The big prop will have to spend two weeks in quarantine when he returns to Australia, making him an unrealistic proposition for teams out of the finals race.
The Sydney-born prop debuted for the Bulldogs in 2012 but has been unable to find a long-term home throughout his career to date.

I always liked him

Going back a bit, remember when he used to come off the bench with Taupau - we were fearsome!

Yeah, for a few games there one year under Potter they had Gavet and Tapau and Akaralo and woods and even Sue and Seaumanafangi really belting teams through the middle and running off Farah, we were really strong and then Farah hurt his elbow and we lost a couple badly and then potter was axed and then the sook Jason Taylor came in and got rid of every aggressive forward in favour of Lovett and co and on it goes again….. breaks my heart, Gavet and Tapau were set to dominate for years in rotation with Woods and we just let them go…. Taylor even rated Santi over Tapau… ????

I’m not sure how Simpkin is travelling but I don’t think Liddle is the answer at 9, his service isn’t good enough imo (we looked better when Mbye was on)

I agree, he has been given more than enough chances this year, but doesn't look like being the player many thought he was going to be, or already was

I think his injuries have really affected his development sadly. Poor bloke couldn't take a trick. He's worth keeping around, but I'd hope that **Simpkin is our starting #9 in '22.** Liddle will be a handy bench player though as he should be able to play #13 as well.

I think it will be the other way round?
Side note, Lids wasn’t on the whole game against the Bronc’s, but he still topped the tackle count.
But, does need to get fitter to be constant for the game imo.

I have no issues with his effort but I think his service isn’t good enough

There are two types of hookers, those that can follow a coaches instructions ( to varying degrees ) and those that can read the defence and therefore direct the play as they see it. Prime examples of the latter are Cam Smith and Damien Cook, obviously the most valuable players in that position. Those types are dangerous because you can't just watch video to work out their game. I'm not saying Liddle is in the same class as Smith or Cook but he can read the play, hence his capability to make metres from DH and put himself in support to score tries. But it takes time on the field to gel with the rest of the pack so they can understand his play and learn to expect the unexpected.

Huge no to Milford in any role at any money.

Best bet when we can’t attract marquee players is to try poach young Penrith and Melbourne talent. Seems we are probably a quality edge, winger/centre and lock short, taking into account players coming though and our ESL signings.

Off contract Panthers fullback/wing/centre **Sunia Turuva** is a speedy Fijian who I’d imagine would be a cheap signing that probably already knows Laurie and Blore. Doubt he gets a run behind Penriths backline.

I also like what I’ve seen from **Darryn Schonig** in the small sample I’ve seen from him. Coming off a long term injury and probably way down the order at Storm, I know he’s more of a prop is my only concern as I think we have a lot of middles already

Lastly, heard great things about the Roosters duo **E.Butcher and Baker** and again better opportunities to crack firsts here than Roosters.

Turuva is a relation of the Penrith hooker. He's a great talent but I understand the Panthers have identified him as a player to retain.

Good post.

I imagine those are the type of players we'd look at. Good young players that can't get a top 30 spot in their current team.

That's all well and good but his passing sucks. So often we are in attacking position and he's passing to knees and ankles, if he can fix that he'll be pretty good I think.

Six clubs awaiting Finucane decision. Wests tigers not amongst them.

I'm much more disappointed about this than TPJ.

Stefano called out specifically watching him train in origin camp opened his eyes on how you should prepare. The only reason I can think of that we're not one of the six is because we've already been told not to bother.

Correct about the latter point. He's not interested in coming to us.

After the shambolic Pangai negotiation where we made an offer/then pulled it and announced that was because he wasn't a good fit/then he was presumably a good fit (again) and another offer was made/then he picks the Dogs (hardly a surprise considering), it would be surprising if Finucane did not think we were a complete joke!

Demps, you might know...

Heard anything about Jacob Anjoul? Young hooker in SG Ball.

I heard we signed him on a 3 year deal a couple years back but apart from that haven't heard too much since. think he was injured this year because he didn't feature at all this year for Balmain in SG, said on his instagram he was playing for Ryde Hawks after nearly a year off. can certainly play, hopefully he's in the Lebanon squad for the world cup.

That's interesting that he's contracted because there's a bit of interest in him. Few clubs making enquiries. How old is he?

It was said at teh time that he'd re-signed for 3 years, after his first season of sg ball, was due to play ball and possibly flegg this season but did his ACL in the summer break. Just a teen still, lightning fast at hooker. Hopefully on a dev contract for next season or at teh very least a flegg contract in 2022 and dev in 23.

Being a young Lebanese hooker with huge potential i'm sure the Dogs will go after him hard, and with us signing LIddle and Simpkin there's no space for him in NRL currently. But he's still a year or two from first grade having only played Ball as a 17 year old. Some time in Flegg and NSW Cup and he might replace Lidz.

But then there's Mikey Tannous too, another young Lebanese 5/8-hooker. Who more solidly built and skillful, but not as explosive.

I think his debut was sensational. was strong against St George and the Titans I thought, and was poor against the Warriors. if anything I'd like to see M'Bye head for the exits to give him more minutes in firsts. no KOE might stunt his development.

I am talking about Liddle, Simpkin hasn't had too many chances as of now, and yes Mbye needs to go

I think Liddle is keeping the seat warm until Simpkin is ready to play first grade week in week out.

It's important to remember Simpkin doesn't turn 20 until October, he's nearly 18 months younger than Stefano and Talau.

It's a real shame state cup is off again. He was developing well.

We also need to remember this will be his 2nd year in a row with limited gametime.

It’s why if the Tigers are serious about him he should be on the bench ahead of Mbye. He needs miles in the legs and body contact. Hooker is a high demand role and his development has now stopped unless he is getting gametime.

You and I can see this, why can't the coach

Agree covid is Madge fault

I am talking about dropping Mbye and giving Simpkin a run off the bench funny guy, try reading it properly

Dragons still keen on Mbye for this year and next according to Brent Read - if they don't sign him this year the offer will be gone for next year though.

Only reason I can see is if where trying to off load mbye some 1 will be more likely to pick him up if he’s playing first grade

That’s where I see absolute benefit in moving MBye on now. The landscape is likely that all lower grades are cancelled which will mean the only time Simpkin gets a chance is if MBye is injured. Moving MBye on gets Simpkin on the bench sooner than planned but at least he is getting match fitness none the less.

It is 100% going ahead, UK has confirmed it - the question mark is whether Australia will participate.

Yup Oz and NZ out now
