Andrew johns want to coach luke Brooks at Newcastle. Will that sway luke Brooks

Andres Johns is trying to offset the calamity at Newcastle when Pearce leaves. He will not succeed because Brooks is staying with Wests Tigers.

Here's an idea Johns. How about we get Ponga and you can give Luke that new start you say he deserves-if he wants to go and if we want to let him go.

I think Ponga is a shoe in for the Dolphins personally. Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s their first signing.

I think you're spot on!

Offering 1.4mill a season he is a shoe in ,the problem with that is he will have all the expectations on his shoulders .. that might not be a good thing in the long run!

That’s what Latrell said about our offer, he didn’t want the pressure of carrying the team?

Latrell didn't carry his team well during the playoffs. Perhaps the pressure was too much and he knocked Manu out to gain a long suspension.

Yeah, he’s turned out to be a bit of a grub, but he is a good player when fit, would have been good for us, but it is what it is??

Can't blame him.. took less money to join a more successful team where he would play better footy. Looked after himself and his career in the long run

Not sure knocking back $1m per season, is looking after himself, but he’s not here, so it matters little.

Daley was better than good.

Daley, Kenny & Fittler all great 6's

Benji too

I am a Benji tragic, but he is just not in Daley, Kenny or Fittler's class.

Though it must be said that Benji was arguably as exciting, if not more exciting, to watch week-to-week. Yes, a champion at both club and rep level and a deserved Golden Boot winner, but I wouldn't put him on their level.

Because beyond pure brilliance, all round game, ability to single-handedly turn contests AND a winning CV; they had the one thing that puts them in the "greatness" discussion - consistency.

He got in their class the day of the Cronulla try in 05.

He surpassed them that day against Parra . That try he set up with the around the back pass , was seriously “how did he do that”. The cameraman missed it , there was a second where he didn’t know where the ball was , and there was near to no space , not to mention the insane dummy before hand to create the space to begin with .

Yep classiest player there was.

Benji, throughout most of his career, unlike Kenny, Daley and Fittler, has not had the benefits of playing in a top quality squad and has often had to carry his team with some out of the box plays and tricks that fans loved to see. If he didn’t pull that off every game people were disappointed.
Kenny was my favourite of the guys being mentioned- loved watching him play.
I think what Benji brought to the game is unlike any other player and his best was better than anything I’ve seen. The length of his career especially through all the turmoil and injuries, ups and downs, and the way he adapted his game - also the high regard most players have of him, is certainly something special.

He’s had all the weight on his shoulders at Newcastle since he got there - the expectations don’t seem to bother him at all…

*“I think he can really add a lot to the club. He can play great. He needs to find that consistency.

“I could help him with when to pass, when to run, when to kick but, also, I think the players around him need to understand his strengths and how to get the best out of him. I think it would be exciting to work with Luke.”*

That's one of the most blatant attempts I've ever seen at enticing a player to break a contract.

I don't think Joey is a "Supercoach" as he would fid it hard to teach what he did so instinctively well. However, Luke has had almost zero development since Cleary left the club and he was Dally M halfback of the year. Looking forward to the move.

Kenny was a magnificent footballer (best 5/8 i have seen),for whats its worth Pawwa still would not have won a premiership without him and Sterling

I'd rate Marshall at least a good light-year-and-a-half behind those other three.

Its a different game now - it is almost impossible to compare players from different eras. In my view with Beni with his skills, ***back then he would have been the GOAT***. In 10-15 years from now his skills will have been surpassed

You just can't make comparisons from different times

Actually I think "back then" Benji would have been smashed out of the game. I dont think many <90kg touch footy players lasted in the game no matter their skill level. As you say, different times.

Anyone who is saying this Brooks story is just media spin is kidding themselves. Johns isn’t going on the record saying he’d like to work with Brooks if the move isn’t in the works

Unfortunately I think you are right. I dont thinks Johns comes out and says that if he doesnt know Brooks wants to leave.

I remember Kenny as a junior playing for Guildford , he spent a lot of time there in the centres , my mate Southy was the 6 and a very good one , however Kenny became a great 6

Well if that's the case i'd take klemmer in a player swap

If Joey is so keen, he could’ve come to us?

Good point and my <90kg point is clearly wrong, but it also raises the point that Kenny was not a small 5/8 and generally all players were smaller and lighter back then with part time players, less weights work and less Pasifika players.

IMO my point remains that Benji would have been to small/slight and would have been bashed out of the game in those days.

EDIT: I realise Im contradicting myself but I know what I mean....

Yeah, I do tend to agree. It's just more about general toughness rather than weight. That said, a smaller player would often have an genuine enforcer to protect them.

Amone needed game time to get to his ability level he is a keeper for back up I believe

I'm pretty sure Pascoe's recent members' letter said Amone had moved on.
