Wests Tigers pursuit of Josh Hodgson is officially over with the hooker expected to see out the remaining season on his contract.

Talks between the Tigers and the Raiders have formally broken down despite months of negotiations.

The Tigers were keen on bringing the English international to the club for the next two years and Hodgson was keen to link up with coach Michael Maguire.

However the clubs have been unable to find middle ground in how they would split Hodgson’s final year of his contract – worth about $800,000.

The Tigers were keen to pay $500,000 but the Raiders wanted more of a contribution. In the end, talks at this stage have broken down.

Hodgson has already returned to pre-season training with Canberra. The ex-Canberra skipper will act as an insurance policy for Tom Starling who has an ongoing court appearance.

The Tigers have Jacob Liddle, Jake Simpkin and even new recruit Jackson Hastings as potential dummy half options.

Excellent news.Long John Hodgson can stay at the waiders

Interestingly WT issued Raiders with a deadline, could mean they are keen to move to the next target? Joey Manu maybe?

That’s quite a leap in class. The great thing is that we aren’t forking out 500k for Hodgson. Ridiculous money to throw at an ageing player with knee issues. Say what you want about Liddle, but he’s not earning crazy money. Imagine Hodgson going down in round 1 and he’s on our books at 500k for the year.

Things are getting interesting at the Dolphins. They’ve missed out on half a dozen big names, and all that’s left is Brandon Smith and Kalyn Ponga. Who’d have thought three weeks into being free to sign players for 2023, that we’d have made a bigger impact than them.

I reckon Mikaele and Joe O will end up there

Talau I thought only re-signed for 1 year, so maybe he has ambitions of heading to the Dolphins too.

Talau is going into the last year of a 3 year contract.

Its strange that there are no reports of other clubs sounding him out for 2023. Still young so should come back ok from his injury.

Probably cos of his injury. Doubt anyone is in a rush to sign him atm.

We offered Mitchell over $1m apparently? Stranger things have happened. Warriors have apparently offered him those sort of dollars. We have the cap space, but are we ready to sign a marquee?

My point is though, Hodgson is a bandaid solution type signing, whereas Manu is a marquee type signing. Idk, if I’m conveying what i mean, but Hodgson comes across as just a player to make up the numbers and add experience , where Manu would be signed cos he’s a gun, similar to Papali’i. Anyway. I thought Manu re-signed?

Yep..hes got plenty of potential.
But needs to bulk up a bit which will improve his missed tackle count..and need improve his positional play as fb
I think he can do both...but 2022 is pretty critical for him
Same withLiddle...good potential but needs to improve key areas of his game

Our team needs to put some desire into their tackling so we’re not so reliant on a little fella at the back.

Both statements are very valid..but his position is the last line of defence,so he has to deal with that effectively

He dealt with it way better than M'Bye did post Daine's injury.

It's actually slightly weird from Canberra. He isn't in their long-term plans, so effectively throwing away $500k to keep a backup for starling seems like a bad call.

Our offer was more than fair. Glad to see the Tigers hold their line.

It’s your opinion but to say he wouldn’t have improved us is completely deluded. Even during an sub par season with injuries he is better than both dummy half’s at the club.

Not a huge loss that we didn’t get him but it’s not exactly great. More so disappointed I have to watch Jacob Liddle in a year old haircut, throwing every second ball to the floor and running like an asthmatic after 50 minutes. If true I’m very glad he isn’t part of the clubs long term plans

There was speculation he had, which tied into 'deferring the warriors offer', but I have not seen any official article confirming he has resigned from 2023. If I am mistaken, please let me know!
