Well, yes, obviously - not all potential pans out. Don't you think the Cowboys would like a do-over on the decision to re-sign the proven Coote over the potential of Ponga?

Ponga played semi final footy and proved his worth at NQC

Cowboys were stuck like we were with Tedesco /Canberra situation , a club was prepared to pay marquee money for potential ,

Meaney hasn't played a game of NRL , bit different , don't you think ??

He'd played maybe a couple of games on the wing, nothing you could take to the bank. He also cost a whole lot more for Newcastle than it would cost to get Meaney - the risk was much higher with Ponga. Of course Meaney won't inevitably pan out but at the likely cost he's definitely a risk worth taking.

Guess you have to big risks after 3 wooden spoons , I didn't have many doubts about Ponga making it , bit like watching our ex fullback in NYC

The only doubts I had about him were to do with his durability in first grade - he looked like a freakish talent otherwise and it was a very good recruitment decision by Newcastle (and the Cowboys dropped the ball).

I can see Brisbane offloading bird soon….they need a 7\. If I was them I would have a crack at dce. Manly are broke and hard to see them being competitive with the imbalance on the roster and reduced salary cap in years ahead....easiest solution get rid of dce and start again.

Question is would you take bird at half price? Personally I wouldn’t as I think we have enough slow centres. My priority would be to recruit some pace or some aerial ability (valentine Holmes, barba)

How about Giddy up Giddy up Moseby…came through similarly to Pongo...

Moseby had speed and a lot of it but he didn't have the footwork or ball playing of Ponga. In fairness I thought Moseby was going to be a good winger but it doesn't seem to be panning out…

Happy Tiger, Potential is word alot of people use a fair to describe very good players but some players never live up to the hype, and we have had our fair share of these players over the years. But it also depends on the type player, if he has the hunger to put in or do the extra work. Some the best young players are the ones that don't stand out all the time.

I can see Danny Levi having a similar career trajectory as Cam McInness if he finds the right team, but I don’t think that’s us, especially if he’s upset about being outperformed by a new recruit.

I can see him joining the Eels. Some deluded Eels' fans believe Klemmer will be released to them! Also Kenny Edwards is in trouble again.

At present we have about 28 players on our books and 90% are your standard meat and potato mid range player. Who under Cleary are playing to the best of their ability . Any signings from now have to be "game changers". Players who can turn a game. Basically we do not need any more depth signings. My only exception would be the odd youth signing who are a real chance of making the next step and a big step at that.

Mole warning- Manly Sea Eagles set to sign Trent Hodkinson from Cronulla Sharks

Manly is poised to receive a much-needed mid-season boost by signing former NSW State of Origin hero Trent Hodkinson from Cronulla.

Hodkinson was due to play for the Sharks’ feeder club Newtown in the NSW Cup today but has been withdrawn.

Sources have told WWOS that he is set to be released by Cronulla in coming days to sign with the Sea Eagles.

Manly has been desperate for a halves partner for skipper Daly Cherry-Evans all season.

Their problems intensified when young five-eighth Lachlan Croker tore his ACL recently, putting him out for the season.

Hodkinson is an experienced player with a good kicking game who will help take the pressure off Cherry-Evans.
