A bit of a whisper from Souths, JAC will sign for next season.

The storm have shut down all negotiations until their season is finished, so how exactly could there be any new developments

Doesn't stop the players from talking. I have a nephew at Souths and he seemed fairly convinced when I spoke to him today.

No offence, but I doubt players are told what’s happening with signings.

I’ve lost all respect for Reynolds. The guy has no integrity and is happy to do nothing for his pay cheque. The club can’t make it any clearer that he isn’t wanted. Yet he is happy to be 18th man , earning $25k a week doing absolutely nothing.

I'd be happy if we could move Josh R along but nothing I've seen from him suggests he's happy being 18th man.

The fact he was signed by the previous coach and doesn't appear to be in the plans of the current coach doesn't mean he's not keen to get on the field. In fact I'd say it's killing him not being able - or picked - to play.

Hopefully there is a reggies comp he can play in next year. That’s usually a motivator to get people to move

If we have lost JAC and Hetherington...Burton is not coming also....it is time to look in the mirror and realise we have an issue.

25 years and never landed a single current Roo or current NSW Origin rep. Only club to never land a current one.

Players use us to drive up their value. Then laugh and leave the table.

Even the Dogs can land them....Hetherington added to the big Pom once he has settled and that is a nice pack. We desperately need mongrel and speed....Hetherington and JAC both would have been great. The Pom said both were almost done a month ago...Lattrel was almost done...:Alex Johnson was almost done....

My question is WHY can't we close out deals?

The answer is why do you believe everything you read on here......?...don’t there are no club “insiders” here, just speculators taking a punt on news...

The Pom seems reliable.

What’s his hit rate....?

Pretty good.

Honestly less than 50% right..

The bloke knows Pascoe. His mail is legit.

I really don’t like either of those ideas.

Any particular reason? At the moment the successful teams have a higher salary cap than the lower teams.

Last year we were after Latrell Mitchell, for arguments sake lets say his market value was $850k. Tigers offered $1.1M which is 30% over the assumed market value and could not get him. Souths offered $600k, 30% under the assumed market cap and he signed.

If nothing changes it is very hard for a bottom 8 team to move to the top 8 because less successful teams have a lower effective salary cap.

There have been no leaks that I can recall about recruitment unless the club wanted it known. I wouldn't imagine any WTs' official would have loose lips which would undermine the professionalism the Club is striving for in its dealings..

I could care less about JR staying now . He’s on his last year , so it’s actually smart cap management to not get it off your books this year , to have it available next year. Realistically thinking about it m you’d really like 1 to 2 mid to top paid players coming off every year . That way you can always refresh the talent and chase a star if it becomes available . The real issue is packer . Mainly because he really is a black hole , and we have a shot at medical retirement . But once again , it’s only 1 more year .

I don't really understand the hate on Reynolds and Packer.

This situation is not their fault, they're not up to standard anymore and will not/should not get picked if we don't need them/they don't improve. Ivan gave them these contracts, they have every right to see it out and work away at trying to come back into grade. If it doesn't happen, sucks for us and them.

Blame Ivan.

No point in blaming Ivan he isn’t here to take the heat. Blame the two lads for not being up to standard.
If you’re a top paid employee at a major firm and you under perform, you get the punt. Simple!

His mail might be legit at the time of negotiations, but when it comes time to actually land the fish it inevitably falls off our hook and gets snagged by someone else! It’s the club’s inability to close a deal with the players we are in negotiations with and this brings the Pom’s strike rate down - I think this is what Ellery is alluding to, correct me if I’m wrong.

Yah but they should never have been top paid employee's to begin with. They could be trying to perform, but they're just not up to it. It's that simple.

Bad signings, blame Ivan.

I don't think you are being fair to The POM.

I don't ever recall him/her coming on here to announce that we have signed a player and it turns out he was wrong.

He does come on here from time to time and let us know who we are interested in and in talks with, and perhaps, to add that things are looking promising. Of course, more often than not we don't land them, but all he is doing is telling us our targets.

So, when you say this lowers his "strike rate", I believe you are misrepresenting his purpose. He is usually pretty careful with his words.

Can you name one player The POM has falsely claimed we had signed ?

Whats the point in blaming anyone everyday, week and year especially if they aren’t here or we can’t do anything about the current situation.

At the end of the day the players are contracted for another year or 2. Unless someone comes along and wants them it will stay that way.

The bigger issue is how do we turn around our image over the next 2yrs to become a destination club.

COE development no doubt will help, gun youngsters & results will change the perception but at the end of the day it will come down to cash & 3rd/4th party deals.

Panthers, Bulldogs, Eels, Roosters, Souths and even Manly can offer more money on/off the park than us.

We are one of the top supported club but struggling to recruit is a massive blight on our mgmt to have cashcows will to fund player deals.

I think we have given up hope on marquee players and banking on youth.

Remember when Raiders couldn't land any big signings either.
They changed tack, look to England and looked to developing their own.

Warriors don't really land big signings either.

Either do bulldogs. I wouldn't say Hetherington is a big signing. They signed cotric but for way others.

Dragons big signings Hunt and Norman are living up to expectations either.

We need to take control into our own hands. Develop from within. Only bring in outside players when they add that level class and value. As we move up the ladder, better players will want to sign.

Need to stop the obsession with signings big name players and start being excited by our junior signings.

Genuine question ....how do 3rd/4th party details work? Are they outside the salary cap? is there any limit to the amount that a coach/player can earn through these deals? How do we know how much each club offers in 3rd/4th party deals?

If the third party has any link to the club there is an overall club limit under the cap. If there is no link between the third party and the club, it’s unlimited

Very good question Ellery!
Interestingly when players we are chasing are asked “are you signing on with the Tigers?” They respond very negatively about the prospect. Mat Moylan and Alx Johnston both angrily denied the option. This gave me the impression that they consider us a last resort, and/or their manager has talked to WT against the players’ instructions to get a favourable price point. I don’t trust anyone posting on here who claims to have inside oil on contract negotiations. Those posts could be made for or by the managers.
To answer your question and given what little information I have. my best guess is we have a real problem with administrative functionality. It would appear, we have worked hard at developing a cultural identity which clings to us like a ball and chain. It’s wrong and shortsighted of us to continually lay blame for our failures toward the coach and players. I often wonder what would have made Ivan lay land mines before leaving? Is it because he is not that intuitive as a coach? Or was he responding negatively to the way he was treated? Sometimes I think some people lie about wanting to win.
Again, very good question Ellery.

Either way, we are stuck with Josh, Packer and Mbye...

The official cap is 9.5 million...those three staying means we are playing with 7 million vs the rest of the NRL plus their 'contribution'. Mbye at least plays most games, but all three combined contribute probably 500 000 worth to the roster.

So, basically, we are playing with a 7.5 million dollar squad vs fully loaded teams.

Its not just us - here is a list the DT put up of unwanted players. Had to laugh at what they put on Flanagan - surely that is a gee up.

BRONCOS

- Jack Bird (2021): $975,000

- Matt Lodge (2022): $650,000

- Brodie Croft (2021): $450,000

- Joe Ofahengaue (2022): $500,000

SHARKS

- Matt Moylan (2021) : $850,000

- Josh Dugan (2021) : $850,000

- Andrew Fifita (2022) : $850,000

TIGERS

- Josh Reynolds (2021): $850,000

- Russell Packer (2021): $750,000

- Moses Mbye (2022): $815,000

COWBOYS

- Josh McGuire (2022): $650,000

- Jake Granville (2021) $400,000

RABBITOHS

- James Roberts (2021) $550,000

DRAGONS

- Corey Norman (2021): $850,000

PANTHERS

- Dean Whare (2022): $460,000
