Many Wests Tigers fans still loathe former coach Ivan Cleary for the way he left the club to join the Panthers in 2018. But they should be thanking him for one thing: delivering their likely next captain.

James Tamou was promoted to skipper at Penrith by Cleary and the way the front-rower conducted himself before and after the grand final – and how he led by his actions on the field all season – has impressed his new employers.

Brad Fittler has annouced his lineup for the first game of State of Origin 2020.

While Tamou is not officially a Tiger until Sunday, there is every chance he will take the top job from current skipper Moses Mbye in 2021.

Tamou spoke glowingly about his Penrith teammates last Sunday night, but it was a speech he delivered to a devastated Nathan Cleary in the ANZ Stadium sheds after the decider that reminded everybody in the room what the Tigers have got.

Cleary had just blamed himself for the Panthers loss to Melbourne, especially his cut-out pass that led to an intercept try, and listened to Tamou as he presented him with the Rugby League Players' Association Players' Champion award.

The halfback stood up to thank Tamou before he broke down in tears.

Tamou was identified by the Tigers for his leadership qualities, which will come in handy following the departures of favourite sons Benji Marshall and Chris Lawrence. The pair played 577 NRL games between them.

Tamou, an Origin and international representative with 267 games experience, has often spoken about embracing the captaincy and the different ways he can improve his skills in mentoring younger players.

Royce Simmons, the Penrith legend who spent time as Tim Sheens' assistant at the Tigers, including the club's 2005 premiership season, backed Tamou to thrive if appointed captain in his first year at the joint venture.

"I've got no doubts he'd do a really good job," Simmons said. "You either have it or you don't – you're a leader or you're not. And Jimmy is."

Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe told The Sun-Herald: "He's already proven himself as a skipper, but whether he will be the Wests Tigers new skipper is a long way from being decided. We have a lot of young guys at the club who have been around a long time now and are stepping up as leaders.

"We're certainly excited to have Jimmy come on board.

"Jimmy has demonstrated, certainly over the last two years, what sort of influence he can have on an emerging and young group of players, which is what we have here at the Wests Tigers."

Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to wait on Josh Addo-Carr, who is desperate to return to Sydney but remains contracted to Melbourne.

**The Tigers are seen as the front-runners for his signature with a four-year deal on the table**.

The Storm want a like-for-like replacement, but the Tigers have no appetite to release David Nofoaluma, the winger Melbourne are interested in.

**There was talk Addo-Carr could be headed to Belmore** with the Bulldogs prepared to offer up Reimis Smith to the Storm in a swap deal. It is understood Smith has been offered to several clubs, including the Tigers, who were approached a few months ago about taking on the outside back as well as Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

The Tigers have four spots they need to fill on their 30-man roster.

Marshall continues to be linked to the Cowboys, but the North Queensland club are refusing to go anywhere near the $300,000 asking price his camp are pushing for.

Damn I hope that’s true, not sure how likely as JAC’s asking for heaps and Belmore could pull that off with a player swap

I think our only chance is penrith release Mansour and storm pick him up then it becomes a chance for us to grab JAC surely we can offer more than dogs

Benji still thinks he’s worth 300k? Laughable.

That’s the line that made me choke on my beer....

Had to crack open another one. Spilled the last one reading that...

Benchie causing me drama even after he's left:angry:

Rabbitohs have signed Tautau Moga and Taane Milne but can’t keep James Roberts or Corey Allan, go figure?

Money to free up for JAC.... It's LM all over again and the NRL won't care as its Souths or Roosters...

Dallin Watene Zelezniak has popped up a bit here in this thread. I don't know what happened this year and I admit I did not watch many Bulldogs games. However, the bloke can play as seen in his days at Penrith and playing for New Zealand. Could be a good pick up at the right price, considering his connection with Madge. Throw in Meaney and we are starting to get a bit of depth in the backs.

Storm won't pay the money that Mansour is on.

Negative Nelly Alert:

Why haven’t we extended Nofa and Aioli while waiting for JAC to make up his mind?

Who is to say we haven't?
McIntyre has not signed yet! Thats why no announcement.
Unless tigers try a little harder he will not be back.
Only offering 1 year deal on minimum wage.
I would think he will go to someone else who is offering multi year deals and much more than we are offering.

Well not the club.... Apparently McIntyre has resigned too but no announcement...
its like they are keeping a big secret and will announce them once they walk on the finot resigned

Penrith would probably subsidise the money and also don't think storm would worry about the salary as much as the like for like winger

Read an article on Tamou tonight and how he’s good chance of taking the C off Mbye. The same article mentioned we were still the front runners for JAC and/or we could pick up Reimis Smith. We have 4 spots to fill. McIntyre will be one spot when he’s announced. Pretty sure 28 players need to be signed by round 1, so we have at least one more external signing coming.

The guy who wrote that has good info when it comes to tigers as well. Seyfarth might be signed up too so could fill a spot before round 1.

Lol . 1 side are saying the dogs are favourites with next to no quotes , but a vested interest to bag the most popular team in Sydney at least for internet traffic .
The second has a direct quote , very strong mail that is usually extremely accurate , and a reputation for being a reputable rag .

So it wasn’t Benji knocking back the Cowboys at all, it was the other way around, the bloke is still in denial

What if we took Reimis Smith or Dallin Watene-Zelezniak then offered one of them to the Storm? would that be wrong?

That sounds like a very US thing to do.
