Many thought Stephen Crichton was crazy to walk away from a $500K handshake deal, but the move is about to pay off big time.

The NRL’s next millionaire could be made this week with the Penrith Panthers set to table a deal that will make Stephen Crichton rugby league’s richest centre.

Crichton will be offered a $10,000-a-game upgrade to his existing contract as part of a new deal that is expected to be worth $2.25 million over three years.

Hoping to end the contract saga that began with a revelation that “the next big thing” reneged on a $500,000 handshake deal, the Panthers confirmed that a revised contract had been finalised and would be put to Crichton as early as this week.

“It has been a bit of a process since the grand final but we are almost there,” Penrith coach Ivan Cleary (inset) said.

“It (managing the roster) has been a challenge for us after a successful year that came as a bit of a surprise, but we are confident that he won’t be going anywhere.”

It is understood the $2.25 million will include a $250,000 upgrade to his current contract which is set to expire at the end of this year.

The $750,000-a-year deal will leapfrog Crichton over Roosters powerhouse Joey Manu ($700,000) as the NRL’s highest-paid full-time centre in a stunning achievement for a 20-year-old who has played just 26 NRL games.

The Panthers are confident the new deal will be enough to fend off interest from a long line of rival clubs, led by the cashed-up Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Chuck 800 on the table

Save the money and throw a mill at staggs.
Play him at fb

The bloke did his ACL a few months ago. Huge gamble to do that. Not too keen on that decision just yet given our hideous past of paying massive money for blokes that barely got on the field year after year. Not to mention we supposedly signed Laurie to fill fullback.

MY Thoughts exactly, I think Crichton could be good anywhere in the backline,we have KEI and others who are promising centers.Staggs is too risky, and not needed.

All this talk about Kei, a young kid who might never make the step up, and now choosing him over Staggs?
You're either joking or related to Kei.

It's all about dollars.$7 to 800.000 for Staggs who is a centre. We don't know how JTJ and JL will perform. We have a couple of very promising centres in CC and Kei can play mid year.Is Staggs good,-- yes. With acl injuries is he a risk for the money-- YES.Remember,McQueen,JR,Packer, nearly 2 mil sitting on the sidelines for years.Would a fit Staggs be a gun -- yes, but he is $500,000 dearer then Kei.

We have shown this year we will not pay overs, so it may be pie in the sky, getting anyone on these high numbers?

Would love a great 2nd rower to rotate with LL and Blore though

And Crichton could be our fullback with Laurie five eight so money not wasted

Although he has proven himself as a fullback

I’d like to see the club have a crack at Hudson Young for 2022.

Off contract this year, he was one of the better forwards in the comp during last years finals - as a starting lock, rather than the more accustomed edge.

We’ve got a big pack of forwards for next season and Young could add that athleticism and utility value to play both on an edge or middle just as effectively.

I was appalled by his eye-gauging in 2019, but he seems to have got that out of his game.

The Raiders are stacked with talented forwards and Hudson, a rookie on the rise, could provide value for money.

They are very impressed with Blore and expect him to have a breakout year in 21, there is also a belief that the club hurt Garners form in 2020.

Nothing against Garner ...but how many other club's sides would he make their Top 17

He isn't a starting backrower

The plan is that he won't be, I'm interested to see if there is an improvement in his form if he is moved back to play along side Brooks.

![alt text](Stephen Crichton’s contract standoff costs Penrith a pretty penny

And a 4 year deal

Or we could just stay away from him and get ourselves a backrower for the same money ....

Angus will stay at the rorters

Who else is available in the back row that's worth that sought of money?

Lots of them .....none available now

But BJ and Jet are going to make the best centre pairing since Meninga and Rodgers ...why replace them

I'm actually excited about the potential of these two, more than anything else.
That Jet highlights package someone shared (vs Roosters) was sooo very pretty to watch and we already know how good Leilua can be. Hope we can get both back to their best form.
I'm a fan of young Talau and thought his transition to first grade was good so I'm therefore also a fan of putting our money where it's needed.

I have more faith in Jimmy turning it up than BJ. Don’t get me wrong Leilua can be lethal but he has been rocks and diamonds pretty much his entire Rl career and a 6 month strict diet and training plan will not fix that.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t get baited and fall back into bad habits. Because I reckon every opposition team comes with a game plan to niggle him

He will be a lot better than last year but I reckon he will still fall short of some people’s expectations. I hope I’m wrong and he is consistent all year but it’s just a gut feel

Yeah I understand where ur coming from.
I think its a decent gamble on him though, similar to teddy. I think he can be a superstar

Lots of people saying McInnes would be lock for us but is that what the club thinks? I’m pretty certain he wants to play hooker over lock.

Club definitely see 13 as a priority. Adam Hartigan and coach see the six again rule as drastically changing the way the game is played in the forwards.

I think the theme going forward from all clubs will be a ball player rather than a 3rd prob at 13.

It is our number 1 priority.

Do they see McInnes as the one to fill that roll?

The one bloke who could help BJ was Meninga ...after seeing what happened when the big fella was riled by opposition teams ...remember Wally Lewis talking about riling Meninga ....his eyes started rolling around in his head and he literally ran over the top of the entire Valley's side to score ...and then ran past Lewis laughing at him

Thats what I would like to see BJ do ....lose the plot by all means and run over opposition centres

Chuck 800 on the table

And a 4 year deal

Or we could just stay away from him and get ourselves a backrower for the same money ....

Angus will stay at the rorters

Who else is available in the back row that's worth that sought of money?

Lots of them .....none available now

But BJ and Jet are going to make the best centre pairing since Meninga and Rodgers ...why replace them

Lol

Would love a great 2nd rower to rotate with LL and Blore though

And Crichton could be our fullback with Laurie five eight so money not wasted

Although he has proven himself as a fullback

I don't believe second row is a priority in the clubs eyes at the present time.

It should be .....you' have to question the club's motive's if it isn't

They are very impressed with Blore and expect him to have a breakout year in 21, there is also a belief that the club hurt Garners form in 2020.

Nothing against Garner ...but how many other club's sides would he make their Top 17

He isn't a starting backrower

The plan is that he won't be, I'm interested to see if there is an improvement in his form if he is moved back to play along side Brooks.

How many years do we give MCK ...Garner ....Seyfarth

Lets do a comparison Roosters : Flanagan from their last game until he signs with Dogs is 12 days from memory

They identify he isn't what they need and is gone

We have seen the MCK's ,Garner aren't what the club needs ...but they are still here 2-3 seasons later

I'm betting a bloke like Liddle wouldn't still be at the Roosters

We aren't thinking like the champions are ...and it blatantly shows
