Long way from happening’: Sticking point in Souths skipper’s contract talks

Rabbitohs’ captain Adam Reynolds concedes he and the club are a long way from coming to terms on his next contract with both parties not on the same page.

While 23-year-old South Sydney teammate Latrell Mitchell was able to negotiate a shorter deal with the club, Reynolds is 30 and at the other end of his career.

Sporting News reported Reynolds wants a long-term deal to give him security after nearly a decade of service to the Redfern club.

“It would be ideal (to stay at Souths), but in saying that, it’s probably a long way from happening at the moment,” Reynolds told Sporting News.

“We’ve started negotiations but we’re not right on the same page at the moment.

“I’d like to play for another three or four years. I’d like to sign for three years.”

Reynolds has scored 33 tries and 1,636 points for the Rabbitohs since his debut in 2012 and won a premiership in 2014, while guiding Souths to three preliminary finals in the last three seasons.

Despite some injury issues in 2015 and 2016, Reynolds has played over 21 games in all of the last four seasons and believes he has plenty more footy in him.

“I don’t really want to sign a couple of contracts towards the back end of my career,” Reynolds said.

“I’d like that bit of security. It’s something that we’re sorting out at the moment and hopefully we can come to a conclusion.”

Reynolds was made captain of the club by Wayne Bennett last season, which shows the high esteem he is held in by Souths.

It means the chances of both parties working to get a deal done are good, but Reynolds believes he has earned the right to get the deal he wants just as Mitchell has.

Reynolds is the halfback and a key playmaker with No.6 Cody Walker and is a prolific pointscorer who has represented the Blues in Origin back in 2016.

However he said contract negotiations won’t distract him from getting the job done on the field in 2021.

“It’s always on the mind but it won’t affect any sort of footy that’s being played,” Reynolds said.

“Obviously you’ve got worry about your future, it’s in the background, we’re sorting through it at the moment but we’re still a long way from getting it done.

How many development players (contracts) can a club have?

I was all for Fitzgibbon, but his trial game wasn’t a “sign me up” game, still think he is worth keeping, but may need a bit longer imo?

4 Development..

Cheers, we have 3 currently, is that correct?

Yep, Hoffman, Kei and Tuilagi

Who's Yep
?

He's not even the best backup half in the comp. He's the most legendary, yes. I will gladly place a wager if you want to back him to have a better year than any other replacement half, over let's say, six games or more. Takers?

Who will be the judge? Certainly not someone from this forum I hope!

I'd throw an offer at him for sure. 700k for 3 years would be my offer. Having said that I'm not sure what he's on now, but at the very least it would bump up what the rabbits have to pay for him to stay. Guy is a proven winner, and has been coached by madge. He's got a few good years in him yet

Buzz also hammering our recruitment is laughable:

“Recruitment has not been a strong point at the Wests Tigers. Judging by Benji Marshall’s lively performance and leadership in the All Stars, they have made another mistake in sacking the veteran five-eighth. He will be a handy pick up for the Rabbitohs.”

I hate Slothfield but why is that comment wrong?

I do think Benji time is up but considering how he played last year & the experience we have lost from an outside view in many judges would say the same.

Maybe this is why..

In the interview re Adam Reynolds contract signing, Adam says Souths are talking about offering him a job with the club after football... ring a bell?

Why is it one rule for some clubs, and other rules for other clubs? I would have thought after that signing Sammy for a ten year job after football that the NRL have woken up to themselves, but evidently not.

Very injury prone and not getting younger. He'd be looking for a big pay packet - pass IMO.

Great front runner but when the chips are down starts limping. I wouldn't go anywhere near him especially while he is looking for the retirement fund pay cheque Hope we learned our lesson after the last Reynolds we invested in.

The Mole: Bulldogs try to sign Eels gun
By The Mole

Canterbury want to sign Eels star Ryan Matterson for 2022 - and have taken a significant step towards their goal by linking up with NSW Cup team Mounties as their feeder club.

Playing for Mounties is none other than Ryan's younger brother Dean, who starred in a weekend trial against Penrith.

A 23-year-old five-eighth, Dean is extremely close to Ryan, who is three years older, and the pair have a goal of playing together in the NRL.

The duo have played one match together - for the Roosters in a trial in 2018 - before going their separate ways.

Ryan went to the Tigers and now Eels, while Dean moved to Wyong Roos, Blacktown Workers and now Mounties.

The Bulldogs have placed Ryan at the top of their wish list for next year - and having his brother on board may prove a major step to achieving their goal.
