He kinda does. Still young and hasn't played heaps of first grade and was making the Souths bench regularly before injury. Can't really complain about a dirt cheap depth signing, you've gotta have them at the club

Amone is good he dominated NSW Cup before breaking into a very good Rabbits side before succumbing to injury. Definitely a very astute buy. He’s also 24 whilst inexperienced at NRL level he would have been playing finals if not injured last year.

Wasn’t that the point though ? Have a team that can grow together . Have a handful of experienced guys around the team to lead . Not have an experienced team with a spattering of youth , which had been our modus operandi for a long time . Let’s give the kids a go .

It's two weeks before round 1, there's not exactly any good young players around who have played 50 games of first grade. You're dreaming if you think we could sign someone like that

Amone dominated reserve grade and forced his way into the Souths first grade team before being injured. Not saying he's gonna be a killer signing, but for dirt cheap he's a decent pickup. Who's out there that you think we should sign realistically?

I'd prefer we back a junior who we think has a lot of potential who we snatched from another club ....I just don't see what a 24 year with virtually no experience brings to the squad ......

Pick the right kid (and this is supposedly Hartigan's strength ) and the junior will probably surpass Amone's abilities by seasons end and be much younger ...sorry the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion

They're doing both. Juniors don't just waltz into the top grade squad, they've been big on strengthening our junior teams and if any impress enough they can start playing reserve grade or get a development contract and end up in first grade by the second half of the season.

Our 20's team looks very strong and I'm sure they're keeping a close eye on those guys - in the meantime you can have Amone as depth as well and get the best of both worlds. He's probably only on a 1-2 year deal.

Yea ok . I agree with you. Maybe they think they can have thier cake and eat it too with the development contracts and CC cup later in the year. But I get your point . To me with AD , The jet , and such , they might be players with amone who the coach has a soft spot for.

Yea . I’ve got to say I understand that view point . I can’t say I have an honest take personally . I don’t remember ever seeing Amone play . But I will say this . I cannot remember a single forward who we’ve recruited since Madge , and harty joined that I’ve wondered “huh , I don’t get it” .
And we have had a lot of those guys in recent years . With every single guy in the pack we’ve signed lately I’ve thought , “yep that makes sense “ . So as Amone is a forward , I’ve going to reserve judgement for later I think.

Sign Hastings for this season the club is on its way to a top 8 finish Maybe a top 6... injuries will be the defining factor.

On today he would be a luxury signing. Our halves played well. Albeit against rubbish opposition.

There's a lot of optimism on this forum this preseason but I don't really see it. I like what Madge is doing in well priced athletic young players everywhere but we'd have one of the worst rosters in the league. Not bad players, most would make NRL squads, but no elite talent anywhere. Madge has cleaned the squad out a fair bit and I expect more short term pain for all that. I hope the new players work out and doueihi and mbye moving positions again, but there's really nothing yet to suggest we're competitive this year. I think next year is when I expect us to compete. This year anything above 12th would be a pretty good job by Madge. Again, I think we're doing the right things it is just going to take more time overcoming cleary's squad so I'm hoping the right players show promise this year and we're finally able to recruit quality players with money to spend to start lifting this team. For your own wellbeing, I'd encourage you just to look at the other NRL teams and think objectively about how many of our players would add much to other teams. I only really think brooks, twal, nofo, tamou, Luciano would attract much interest from other clubs. Maybe I'm forgetting 1 or 2 but most teams have better lineups.

Although I agree with this post ..... “worst roster” should not be part of the narrative.
In my assessment We are still a mid table side which will struggle because our spine is not settled, no established goal kicker and we are lacking in back row/ lock quality & experienced player.
There are more questions than answers about this side and that is not a good look.
But saying that I have hopes and am looking for improvement on last years efforts and that eventuates than we are just couple of good players away from the finals.

Idk about worst roster, but the spine is bottom 3.

Just off the top of my head, I’d take our spine over Dragons, Broncos, Bulldogs, and probably Titans and cowboys.
