I'm not a fan.
Players don't own numbers in rugby league. In NBA, NHL, EPL etc players select a number and where that all season. In rugby league numbers define positions that a player plays. In the current format i don't like it.
If we scrapped the numbers 1-17 and went to a system like the aforementioned sports of 00-99 then yes players could have their name on the back of a jersey. There are good merchandising opportunities with the latter, but it does change a 100 year old system of jersey numbers the code has had. Is it worth it?
I am sure the number would still be on the players back(1-17).When it has been used in the past the players name is a few inches above the number and it just identifies the player to a larger audience. Not everybody knows the player names to all the teams starters let alone the people on the bench.
I don't think you understand. Say if little Timmy wanted to get an Mbye jersey. What number would you put on the back of his? It would rotate on a weekly basis. You can't offer the name on the back to some but not all players.
The whole point of name and number on the back of the jersey is sales. It's devalued if you are selling a jersey with a certain name and number on the back, only for that number to be worn by half a dozen other players if the first choice gets a serious injury.
The only option if they want to have names on jerseys is to scrap the current numbering system and go to 0-99.
I disagree a players name can go on the back of the position they are playing as it has always done in the past.Players dont own a number just as they dont own a FG position
You're really confused.
Players names have never gone on the back of club jerseys.
Players don't own a number currently, but this would need to be introduced if the NRL wanted to cash in on this global sport trend.
It has been used in representative football
It has been used in rep games, but they are annual games such as SOO,Australian teams...the players could have their names on it as next year someone completely different may be picked in a certain position...
Club level, numbers only as it would be impossible to keep up with the costs of producing jerseys to put names on different positions week to week when the squad can change week to week with injuries, suspensions etc....just my opinion ...
Why not have most of the team with named jerseys and any issues mean a simple numbered jersey needs to be worn. For example if someone were to get injured or suspended their replacement simply puts on an unnamed numbered jersey. Cuts the cost problem down.
Brilliant idea.
