Neddy, I once asked Wayne Pearce what it was like to get tackled by Terry Randall. He said if you spot him and brace yourself, it's not that bad. From Junior, that was like saying " if you get hit in the head by a baseball bat but you put your hands on your head, it's not that bad".

Hynes is good but where would we play him? We have a fullback, we have a 5/8 and he's not a halfback.... he'd be an excellent 14 but he's not leaving storm to be a utility.

'Wherever he wants' is not good business - unless we move on Brooks he doesn't really have a spot here and can understand why the club wouldn't be after him.

We need wingers and centres and second rowers a lot more than another spine player. He's good but I don't see him playing as well outside of the Melbourne system either.

He has a spot at 1 in my team - You say we have a FB, we can always do with a FB that is a lot better and Hynes eats Laurie at the moment. Laurie has much to learn and I can see another Brooks scenario coming up, 3 or 4 seasons we'll still be saying, "Oh! he will be a lot better next year." Laurie needs to go back to Reggies like Simpkin and learn his trade - e.g. organise the team line, learn to tackle, improve an almost non existent kicking game, chime into the backline and be part of it. When he can do all that he will be as good as Nico Hynes.

As far as playing outside the Melbourne system - he can do it himself (not like a Blair that had one job to do) but how did players like Kimmorley, Widdup and GI go after they left the Storm. Hynes makes his own breaks, sets up plays for others etc. he does not totally rely on other players. This was no more in evidence than last weekend.

Fatty said broncos have offered him 600k a year for 3 years to play fb. He’s not worth that much to play centre for us. Our biggest problem is playing people out of position. Example Talau on the wing. Hynes would not be effective at centre. Spend that 5-600k on a gun centre or winger who actually plays the position we need him for. I reckon management will keep either Joey or jet if it’s a cheap contract. We got gildart coming over so I doubt we buy anymore backs with the amount of young outside backs we have. Which means we can go hard at big ball playing lock and spend money on him, the rest will go to extending and upgrading contracts. Plus a few more astute signings. Hopefully another backrower.

Agree about gildart, as for our young players they have all played less than 20 games! Talau, Aj, Hoffman, Cooper and maybe even cini. These guys need to play otherwise we lose them and watch them excel elsewhere! We gotta back our young talent and let them grow. They don’t do that by playing reserve grade all year. They are passed that. Best teams have young talent mixed with great players, we can buy that one great outside back, nofa has that second spot and laurie has Fb. which leaves 2 spots for our young talent to try and grab a spot in. I reckon we loose 1 or 2 of the young outside backs in the next 6-12months regardless.
