We did everything we could to keep James Tedesco and Aaron Woods: Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe
By Michael Chammas
April 21, 2017 — 7.47pm
Wests Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe insists the club did everything in its power to retain James Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

The Tigers are disappointed the superstar duo didn't take up the lucrative four-year contracts offered to them, failing to notify the Tigers of their intention before the Friday, 5pm deadline imposed on the pair during the week. Woods is bound for Canterbury, while Tedesco is set to sign with the Sydney Roosters for next season – leaving Luke Brooks as the sole survivor of the "big four" following Mitchell Moses' decision to sign with Parramatta.

Deadline passed: Wests Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe says he is comfortable with how the Tigers conducted the contract negotiations.

"I'm really comfortable that we afforded them every opportunity to stay here," Pascoe said of Woods and Tedesco. "We can always learn from the way we do things. It's been a challenging time for all involved. These things take time. Throughout any negotiations there's a lot of going back and forth. But we're really comfortable with the fact that we afforded the players every opportunity that we could to stay at the club.

"We respect their decision and they'll continue to play with the heart they've played with for this organisation for some time now for the rest of the season."

Exit: James Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

The defection of their three biggest names leaves the Tigers with close to a $4 million war chest to spend next year, with Josh Reynolds high on their list after learning Gareth Widdop is set to re-sign at the Dragons.

The club is hopeful Ben Matulino and Russell Packer will add some mongrel to a pack that will be without Woods next year, excited about the prospect of finally overcoming what has seemed like a never-ending battle with salary cap restraints.

"The club is in a really exciting position," Pascoe said. "We've had years and years of salary cap challenges. We believe we've built some really robust processes to make sure that doesn't happen in the future. [In] 2018, there's a lot of freedom around our salary cap.

"For the first time in probably the club's 17-year history, we enter a market that has nearly 200 players on the market with a freed-up salary cap and significant amount of power to help build this club's roster into a strong football team."

The decision to impose a deadline on Woods and Tedesco was designed to give the club more time to move in the player market in the event the pair decided to leave the Tigers.

Pascoe stands by the decision to set a deadline and believes it was made in the interest of both the club and the players.

"The intent and motivation behind that was to place some certainty, not only for the club but for the players as well," Pascoe said. "That deadline passed today at 5pm and as a result of not receiving official confirmation from the players' manager, the club has decided to withdraw the current contract offers in place.

"Both James and Aaron and their manager have been really engaging throughout the process. This has been a really challenging time for all parties. It's gone a long time and certainly with regret that it has gone on for so long. But these are really tough decisions for any player who has been at a club for a long time.

"We have the utmost respect for that and for them in doing that. Imposing the deadline, that creates certainty so that we can make decisions in the best interest of the club and the club first. We will always act in the best interests of the club.

Woods still hasn’t impressed me with his defence. And that is a factor we should be recruiting for.

I feel we need about 3-4 senior experienced players that have a couple of years in the tank and are willing to be part of a young and building set up. Add to the leadership group and really help the side in and around situations on the field.

A Zane Tetavano type that has found his way into the past 3 grandfinals.

I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing if Sue wants to come back for one of these roles. But other guys like Dunamis Lui and Kamikamika at the storm might be good options.

Really wished Takiaho wanted to stay in the league but I don’t think any forward over 30 is worth more than 200-300k.

Alex Glen is another one I would consider. All reports are that Broncos are pushing him to retire.
He still throws everything into a game and has some versatility that is very beneficial. Offer him a 1 + 1 club option.

Maybe you could start a retirement home for Rugby League players that are beyond their use by date. The list you have above is a good start.

Any Tigers fan who knows his history would have to feel the same.
It is a slap in the face to even entertain the idea.

I know the history but for some reason I don’t hate him. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, he’s just a massive idiot.

badly advised by his manager

If that's the case he is even more of a liability. We need culture. Intelligent guys who have the self awareness to lead other players

The guy is a tool and dogged the club. That's all there is to it.

I was saying basically we don't need all these guys you were talking about. I am happy with what we have, if we keep TM and Seyfarth. Maybe a good ball playing lock - where ever you get one of those and would come here. I am happy to stay with and develop my two above, plus Stefano Alphabet, Simpkins, Tuilagi, Blore and Amone + others that are coming through. Need another forward with experience besides Joffa and Tamou, as I mentioned a ball playing lock, would do the trick.

Just my thoughts Needa.

Maybe someone asked a club official about Woods after he come out and said he’s keen on returning, and they said Madge met with him. I doubt they’d make that stuff up. Hooper has close contacts from the club

Is Woodsy the missing piece of the puzzle to get us to top 4? Possibly

He couldn't before when he was in his prime, I don't think that he will get us anywhere near the top 4 now.

I always thought they let the wrong prop go when Fifita left but that hasn’t played out well in hindsight. Woods was so predictable but he worked hard. Somewhat over rated as an Origin player. I hated the way he left especially because he was our captain. I read he didn’t have a club for 2022 and I felt nothing for him. If this wasn’t in the news I would not even consider his return. Oddly though I’m not opposed to him coming back. Put him on a 1+1 year option on $250k and make him work for his spot. I reckon he’d make up for his betrayal.

Woods at a 250k price is a good option

I hate Woods and don’t want him.

If any club was integrated in him, I would offer him minimum wage. It’s either that or he gets a real job.

Exactly. There are plenty of 30+ props around looking for a couple of bonus years before retirement. Woods isn’t anything special, he’s 100m and 35 tackles a game. He offers nothing that we don’t already have or could buy and if we bought someone at that point you are buying their experience, leadership and winning culture. Woods, his mates and his manager ripped the heart of this club for their benefit. Taking Farah and Benji back was different, they were winners and leaders. Woods is neither.

There's a lot of heavy duty grudge holding against Woods.
I reserve my grudge holding for those who broke contracts and threw games.

I do not think he is a bad player and is a solid member of a forward pack at the right price.

I think we need some aggression up front. Napa better fits the bill, but he has not played well for 3 years.

Don’t like Woods or Napa. Stick to the youth policy. Heard we are after Franklin Pele from the Sharks. Big, aggressive and mobile. That’s who we need to target.

Yep I got that guy being the next Junior Paulo. Exactly.

I want to win games. It’s unpopular, but I’d take Woods, Matterson, Aloaia, Moses and Teddy in a heartbeat if they came back got us to finals.

IMO signing big names is not our problem, getting the well performed players to want to stay is.

We should trade Stefano to bring Sharon home. We deserve a Tamou/Sharon front row. If we are really lucky we might even get Moses and Teddy back in about ten years time to help Brooks' development to one day become a real halfback. Think of the hat sales. This club is a joke.

Woods is a ? in coming home imo

I was deadset against this. I hated 'it is what it is', and having our captain try and lure our best talent away from the club. But he's a former Origin and Test prop. He is a local junior, who is one of few that would feel anything for that jersey. I'm not saying he is Benji, but Benji wore an Auckland Blues jersey while still playing for us, and then later came out and said he was immature and shouldn't have done what he did. Which is what Woods is saying now. The future of the pack (Stefano, Blore, Tuki) has basically no experience. Could do worse.

He didn't show heart when he was captain and played for us last time. I don't think he's better than when he left.

I don't know if that's true...

I read they're shopping Croft to England.

Croft and Brooks are very similar players in my opinion.

Think they like Staggs to partner Reynolds in the halves. Personally not a fan of this....

Brooks is a far better player than Croft Brooks can tackle

I joke about Woods but at the end of the day he easily makes our team. Our forward back is wildly overrated on here.

Our pack is overrated for sure.
But Woods never makes my team again.
Any Tigers fan who knows his history would have to feel the same.
It is a slap in the face to even entertain the idea.

I know the history but for some reason I don’t hate him. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, he’s just a massive idiot.

I think he’s both.
I absolutely despise him.

Put it this way, I’d rather have Moses, Matterson and 3 Terry Lambs than him.

Terry lamb ?

There's a lot of heavy duty grudge holding against Woods.
I reserve my grudge holding for those who broke contracts and threw games.

I want to win games. It’s unpopular, but I’d take Woods, Matterson, Aloaia, Moses and Teddy in a heartbeat if they came back got us to finals.

IMO signing big names is not our problem, getting the well performed players to want to stay is.

The only one we could ever think of coming back is Teddy unless there was a better option
