Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Woods still hasn’t impressed me with his defence. And that is a factor we should be recruiting for.

I feel we need about 3-4 senior experienced players that have a couple of years in the tank and are willing to be part of a young and building set up. Add to the leadership group and really help the side in and around situations on the field.

A Zane Tetavano type that has found his way into the past 3 grandfinals.

I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing if Sue wants to come back for one of these roles. But other guys like Dunamis Lui and Kamikamika at the storm might be good options.

Really wished Takiaho wanted to stay in the league but I don’t think any forward over 30 is worth more than 200-300k.

Alex Glen is another one I would consider. All reports are that Broncos are pushing him to retire.
He still throws everything into a game and has some versatility that is very beneficial. Offer him a 1 + 1 club option.

I think it's convenient that Woods says he wants to come home then an hour later an article says the club is thinking about it... smells like rubbish to me

Prefer we have a chat to Darryn Schonig

I joke about Woods but at the end of the day he easily makes our team. Our forward back is wildly overrated on here.

Our pack is overrated for sure.
But Woods never makes my team again.
Any Tigers fan who knows his history would have to feel the same.
It is a slap in the face to even entertain the idea.

He is more impactful than Tamou imo

I know the history but for some reason I don’t hate him. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, he’s just a massive idiot.

A two year deal for woods on not much makes our team better. Currently Twal is our only forward averaging more metres (121 for Twal & 119 for woods). Means woods can start next year and Tamou can go bench. Then following year Tamou retires/goes to England and woods can go bench. Would also look to get Siro back - risky because of injuries but wouldn’t cost much and a fit siro makes our team better as well. Unfortunately ex players/players with connection to club are about the only ones we get can without playing ridiculous overs

Woods at a 250k price is a good option

Put it this way, I’d rather have Moses, Matterson and 3 Terry Lambs than him.

Moses was so much worse than woods. Tanked games to get an early release, at the very least woodsy finished his contract.

Some great quotes in here from Pascoe in 2017:

We did everything we could to keep James Tedesco and Aaron Woods: Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe
By Michael Chammas
April 21, 2017 — 7.47pm
Wests Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe insists the club did everything in its power to retain James Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

The Tigers are disappointed the superstar duo didn't take up the lucrative four-year contracts offered to them, failing to notify the Tigers of their intention before the Friday, 5pm deadline imposed on the pair during the week. Woods is bound for Canterbury, while Tedesco is set to sign with the Sydney Roosters for next season – leaving Luke Brooks as the sole survivor of the "big four" following Mitchell Moses' decision to sign with Parramatta.

Deadline passed: Wests Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe says he is comfortable with how the Tigers conducted the contract negotiations.

"I'm really comfortable that we afforded them every opportunity to stay here," Pascoe said of Woods and Tedesco. "We can always learn from the way we do things. It's been a challenging time for all involved. These things take time. Throughout any negotiations there's a lot of going back and forth. But we're really comfortable with the fact that we afforded the players every opportunity that we could to stay at the club.

"We respect their decision and they'll continue to play with the heart they've played with for this organisation for some time now for the rest of the season."

The defection of their three biggest names leaves the Tigers with close to a $4 million war chest to spend next year, with Josh Reynolds high on their list after learning Gareth Widdop is set to re-sign at the Dragons.

The club is hopeful Ben Matulino and Russell Packer will add some mongrel to a pack that will be without Woods next year, excited about the prospect of finally overcoming what has seemed like a never-ending battle with salary cap restraints.

"The club is in a really exciting position," Pascoe said. "We've had years and years of salary cap challenges. We believe we've built some really robust processes to make sure that doesn't happen in the future. [In] 2018, there's a lot of freedom around our salary cap.

"For the first time in probably the club's 17-year history, we enter a market that has nearly 200 players on the market with a freed-up salary cap and significant amount of power to help build this club's roster into a strong football team."

The decision to impose a deadline on Woods and Tedesco was designed to give the club more time to move in the player market in the event the pair decided to leave the Tigers.

Pascoe stands by the decision to set a deadline and believes it was made in the interest of both the club and the players.

"The intent and motivation behind that was to place some certainty, not only for the club but for the players as well," Pascoe said. "That deadline passed today at 5pm and as a result of not receiving official confirmation from the players' manager, the club has decided to withdraw the current contract offers in place.

"Both James and Aaron and their manager have been really engaging throughout the process. This has been a really challenging time for all parties. It's gone a long time and certainly with regret that it has gone on for so long. But these are really tough decisions for any player who has been at a club for a long time.

St George Illawarra Dragons set to retain Gareth Widdop as Wests Tigers turn to Josh Reynolds
"Whether we like it or not, it is a business today and the players have been going through the process of making a decision that is in the best interest of themselves and their families.

"We have the utmost respect for that and for them in doing that. Imposing the deadline, that creates certainty so that we can make decisions in the best interest of the club and the club first. We will always act in the best interests of the club.

Didn’t things turn out well for us with all that optimism?

Maybe you could start a retirement home for Rugby League players that are beyond their use by date. The list you have above is a good start.

Maybe someone asked a club official about Woods after he come out and said he’s keen on returning, and they said Madge met with him. I doubt they’d make that stuff up. Hooper has close contacts from the club

Is Woodsy the missing piece of the puzzle to get us to top 4? Possibly

With regards Woods, I would hope the recruitment staff understand peak performance is like a mountain - we need players on the way up, not on the way down.
