Why’s everyone complaining?

They lost friend and cordner this year… they’re under the cap..

Yeah, when you consider those losses you'd like to think that they're under the cap. And then you look at the rest of their squad being littered with Origin players and internationals and you start to realise there is no way in hell that they're under the cap. Sure, they lost a few key players but that doesn't account for the fact that nearly every single player in their starting 13 is a rep level player. Can't believe there are people actually trying to vouch for the Roosters being under the cap just because they lost a few players.

Exactly. It’s laughable.

Its never about who they lose its about who they have got. They never lose players to stay under the cap they lose players that they no longer want or retire, and replace them with equally good ones or better.

Lose Pearce gain Cronk. Lose RTS gain Tedesco. Lose Friend gain Cheese. It's like a constant upgrade system but never seems to cost them any extra money.

In a decade or so the Roosters spine will be Jesus, Zeus, Hercules and Superman, and all 4 will claim they are playing for the chance of a premiership and the Roosters professionalism.

Would a draft stop this sort of thing?

Probably, but it has no legs in our sport. Also it's all short-term...you only have to look at the NBA to see that the draft does distribute talent, but soon enough money talks and the big-name players are drawn to whichever franchise is spending the big bucks at that time.

What I don't understand, is why people think a draft has no legs in the nrl?

I love the NBA, and the draft does distribute talent. That's why we see other teams make the play-offs.

Yes, you do get some big name players changing teams, but that's generally at the end of their career when they're chasing championships. But that doesn't always work out, last season was an example.

The Player's Association has time and time again stated they won't and will never agree to a draft in their collective bargaining agreement negotiations with the NRL. They took the game to court in the 90's over a draft proposal and won. The Player's Association claim it is a restriction of trade for their members (the players) and having won the court case previously on that basis, there's little to no chance that a draft would get up due to previous legal precedent.

A draft while evening up where good juniors go, restricts draftees being able to choose where they work and generally what they can earn as draft wages are generally set in stone in other sports.

In the American sports, a draft works due to athletes being developed in the High School and Collegiate sporting organisations. Even the AFL juniors is run over various state league competitions that aren't affiliated directly to the AFL clubs. That's not the case here where players are developed in the club system.

If you installed a draft in the NRL, there's no point in conducting Harold Matt's, SG Ball, Flegg etc as your junior talent aren't yours to keep. Why would you pay junior coaches to develop players? It's just not something that can be introduced for Rugby League.

**it will kill off grassroots football. our high school and tertiary systems aren't strong enough to support the pathways of the sport. football clubs won't see the point in funding junior footy if they're just developing players for poorly run clubs to snap their players up. a draft just won't work in the NRL.**

think of how good it is to see blokes like Doueihi & Stefano come home because they're our junior products. how good is it to see Alex Seyfarth coming through the grades to now becoming a regular starter in firsts who is a local boy. Justin Matamua and Brandon Tumeth are both examples of players that are going to have long careers with us, and we're about to see them come through in the coming years, starting with being in the Emerging Blues squad. a draft kills all of that. that's why I think it has no place in the NRL.

Isn’t that what’s happening already?

I'd have to disagree. we've invested heavily into our pathways these past few years and we're going to reap the benefits in the next couple of years. Penrith's system needs no introduction. Newcastle are in the process of doing something similar with Garth Brennan heading up their pathways department. the Illawarra region has continued to bear fruit for St George. Manly have invested heavily within the north-west which has seen them unearth the likes of Schuster, Sipley & Olakau'atu. Frank Ponnissi is on record saying Melbourne want to improve grassroots footy in Victoria. a draft puts the brakes on all of that.

I think the proof is in the pudding, and there are a handful of clubs that do the heavy lifting in regards to junior development. That is until the next batch of talented juniors get poached by the Roosters or another big club and the junior development strategy goes out the window. It’s happened several times both to us and to other clubs like the Raiders.

There is also a big difference between grassroots footy and elite pathways. Yes almost clubs see the value in pooling the elite juniors, but many of those clubs struggle to fill competitions in their own junior areas.

Regardless I think the NRL should take control of junior league and allocate funds accordingly. Relying on clubs isn’t working.

Cotric rumour. @demps your red hot mate. Called it about a month ago. If we get Lomax your new nick is Nostradamus

**Hooper Warning**

The Wests Tigers have emerged as a left-field contender to sign ex-NSW and Australian flyer Nick Cotric.

Fox Sports has learned Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire and director of football Tim Sheens met with the Canterbury-Bankstown outside back over the weekend and remain in negotiations to orchestrate an immediate release.

Initially the Canberra Raiders were the early favourites for Cotric to return to the national capital but the Tigers interest is now gaining serious momentum.

Tigers director of football Tim Sheens confirmed the club was in negotiations with Cotric’s agent Sam Ayoub.

“It’s certainly nowhere near being done but we’ve met with the lad and Madge likes what he could add to the roster,” Sheens said.

“We’re not the only club at the table so we’ll just have to let it take its course and see how it plays out.”

Tigers recruitment boss Warren McDonnell has spoken to Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould about the prospect of Cotric switching to Concord.

Cotric, 23, joined Canterbury-Bankstown in November of 2020 and has two years remaining on a deal believed to be worth around $650,000-a-season.

But with the Bulldogs looking to reshape the club’s roster for 2023 and beyond the ex-NSW and Australian winger has been given permission to negotiate with rival clubs.

The Canberra Raiders are still in the equation but with the Tigers armed with a $1 million war chest and three spots available in the club’s top 30 for 2022 there’s a view they could blow the Raiders out of the water.

The Tigers are still looking to bolster the club’s outside backs and Sheens confirmed the club likes the appeal of Cotric being able to play in the centres, fullback or wing.

“We’ve obviously got Daine Laurie coming back from injury and the good thing with Nick is he grew up playing fullback, has also played on the wing and can play in the centres,” the Tigers director of football said.

“So from that point of view he could provide us with depth in a number of positions.”

Direct quotes from Sheens about it too. Says they're interested but not close to a deal

A head of the curve.

See what happens.

Cotric is best on the wing though.
