The real issue weve got >$2mill invested in 3 highly paid halves in Hastings Douhi and Brooks...thats one too many when we have so many holes elsewhere in our lineup
Nobody EVER said Madden is a better player than Brooks TODAY...thats ridiculous conflation..Madden has done nothing except demonstrate potential,and he;ll undoubtedly get his chances this year as a backup.
Mind you,he wont have to do a lot to surpass Brooks contributions to out attack in recent years
Of course we can spend Brooks $700k effectively ..that sort $$ of mite buy a classy centre or mite have kept Lucy.or .mite buy Thompson...who knows.The market for players is always evolving

I doubt we're paying hastings much and most teams have a decent chunk of cap tied up in their playmakers.

Agree totally...weve got a whole season of ebbs and flows to work out how we optimise our cap..lets sit back and enjoy
...and from our own polls its obvious Brooks divides the supporter base.
Lets see what he can do with his umpteenth halves partner!

Hastings talked him up after the game and that’s good enough for me leading into the season. Let’s chill and see what happens game 1 isn’t it just great that the season starts in a week!!!

Nikora is solid - I have liked him for the last few years. Big unit, runs good lines, decent D.

Yes, Luc has stepped up with his attack but geez, his defence sorely lacks...

Very impressive with the ball in hand during the trials but certainly was not targeted in defense during the time he was on the field.

He will definitely be targeted by the opposition during the season proper and I can only imagine that will bring him back to the field a little and maybe that 700k price tag may seem a little over valued once again.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Lucy and wish he was staying but even though he has gone to a new level while with us, 700k is a big ask and I was amazed that he got it.

Remember Brad Takairangi telling everyone he was a Tigers player as well.

How good is B Nikora ? Who rates him ? The big question to me is are we better next year compared to this in relation to our edge forwards.

Luciano & Tuilagi vs Papalli and Nikora. Are we better off ?

Luc is a weapon. He is the best edge attacking forward we've had in years. I can only think of Ellis as being at that level. Luc defensively is poor though. Ellis was awesome.

Tuilagi could be anything but would not displace either of those blokes at this stage.

If I was coaching the Sharks I would want want both Luc and Nikora in my 13, but would just give the nod to Luc if pushed.

If I was coaching para Luc would not take papa's spot.

12 months from now, who knows, on form to date next year's potential backrow is stronger, and arguably elite.

Luc was great in attack in the trialsand wasnt really tested in defence when youve got a thousand interchanges.Think we got the more complete player in Pap....and cheaper too!

Talau 22 games missed 51 tackles from 150 made - 11th centers / 23rd backs

AD 20 games missed 60 tackles from only 289 made, 3rd worst 5/8th - 11th worst back
Norman (67) / Clifford (63) worse than him, but AD made 100 less tackles than both.

Brooks 24 games missed 70 tackles and made 426 tackles
Made 100+ more tackles than all but 1 halfback in the comp.
He was also asked to make close to 140 more tackles than AD.
We had 14 players who averaged 2.00 or more missed tackles a game (Brooks 2.97), we had 4 players average over 3+

A halfback should never be isolated and made to defend the way Brooks was put into defensive situations last year. Teams had their way with us on the edges isolating players because our forwards crammed inwards and got found out at marker rather than holding a clean defensive line.

This is something I will be looking at closely during the year is the impact Cayless has on how we hit & control the forwards, hold our line formation without the impacts of edge forwards coming infield & allowing teams to isolate our edge & Brooks.

You might find that's because our back rowers have absolutely sucked for his entire career.....
And no one is scared to run at him.

There's been zero outstanding defensive halves since Joey retired...
Brooks is no worse than the others in the comp ATM.
He's just in a worse team than most and sees more traffic.

Halves or halfbacks? Cam Munster, Jack Whigton are both pretty good defenders. Nathan Cleary is probably the only halfback that immediately comes to mind.

Hastings had a point to prove coming home,which means some sort of discount to the market,but he was one of the most highly rated players in ESL and $600k doesnt buy much in a 7 jersey here(Hunt gets twice that!)
My point is,weve got (and paying for)3 premier halves ,yet have huge gaps elsewhere

Was he perfect last year absolutely not. He does need to lower his missed tackle rate but he needs support. His kicking game was a contributor to our bad positioning and his lack of leading the team around & limited running game also had an impact.

In saying that no doubt doing double the volume of work in defense to most halfbacks would've had its toll. Keep in mind it isn't just the tackles counted often there are subsequent effort activities needed (3rd man, scramble, up/down etc) which was nearly double to most other halfbacks.

But there was absolutely bigger reasons why we sucked which contributed to bad field position and letting in the volume of points we did.

Our kick returns meters was the worst in the comp by close to 500mtrs & we conceded the 2nd worst line breaks despite having the best offload record, this meant teams didn't need to push the pass.

One quote on here (resonating through the media) is brooks is on 900+. Big difference to 700 which I’m more comfortable with.
