Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Sounds a bit like Balmain, only difference was that there was no partner for Norths
Except Balmain didnt go broke until many years after the merger.

Manly were obviously the partner for Norths and they signed the merger. Norths went broke immediately, never even got to a game as the beagles. Manly knew it which is why they did it....took the $$$.

Even visually, the Bears never got a look in as the Northern Eagles. Looking back, it was just Manly taking a 3 year get away to the Central Coast for some R&R.

i went to North Sydney oval once when north Sydney put 60 on Balmain and Taylor kicked then from everywhere and they had that big brass band playing in the corner "Mr natural" everything he slotted them over... bloody long day
Also remember when Glenn Morison went to north's and scored the match winner against balmain
good looking ground though

Played both cricket and football at North Sydney oval. Terrible football ground as you had to contend with a rock hard cricket pitch when it was dry and a Bulli mud heap when it was wet.

Good cricket ground because the boundaries were short!!

Best memories of North Sydney oval was Frank Hyde sitting on the sideline at his card table, blowing up at the ball boys for blocking his view

Something a little different. ...

Thinking about Olam. We know this:
Justin Olam can perform and be Dally M Center of the year.
Justin Olam has been totally flat in 2023 for the Storm, maybe injuries, maybe psychology from a bit hit.

In short. Justin Olam could be anything. An utter Gun to Moses Mbye2

Olam's attitude will determine what he will be. But also our coaching staff will determine what he will be.
I reckon John Morris and Benji will do a Taane Milne to him and he will be firing like anything.

Naturally we don't place our hopes on one player, but if our coaching staff are good. We should see improvement in Olam, in Tupou, in Naden and Staines. As these players we know have higher potential and have hit it in the past. If 1x doesn't fire, sack that lazy cap waster. But if they all don't fire, we need to look at Benji&Morris.

Something I was thinking about. Lets stop hiring from bottom of table teams.

Dragons came 16th. Not saying Lomax ain't a good player, he is. But when your 16th you get used to not winning games. Your coach is focused on winning and across the 17... while when your top 4 the expectation is that you play in a way that doesn't concede tries. i.e. if you have a low ball carry, it will be picked up in a top 4 team but a bottom 4, the coach has so many areas to look at.

Olam isn't greater then Lomax based on last years form. Yet I trust Olam to stuff up less, to hold his spot in the line and at least for the opposition to think "dont run at me".

So glad we have hired from Penrith and Melbourne. Sure we got 1x from the saints, lets not get more.
Reynolds/mbye did not work out for us and the dogs at that stage really were a bottom 16 side (and haven't recovered since really). Klemmer came from the Knights, a midway side and seems to have performed in a midway fashon.

When we have pinched people from Easts, like Momo and Ryan M... they went well for us. (and then we gave one away).

Lets try to hire from teams that are top 4-8. Maybe it will cost more, but for our backline we should be thinking Less Depth more will take the field every game talent.
Can someone please tell me when and where Lomax excelled last year from memory he got dropped and the couple of times he actually got in the clear
With 10mtr starts got mowed down very very quickly, people are banging on about our current lack of speed and are suggesting we would benefit from Lomax, just don't see or get it

I have no idea why I thought he was a Kiwi. I thought that was why he’s never been touted for Orign. Turns out he’s just not good enough.

Norths werent shafted. They went broke all by themselves just after merging. The CEO ran off with his compo. They ceased to exist because of their own incompetence.
This.
And their old 'established fan base' is just that. Old!!. I'm not sure there is much to gain, long term, by appeasing their fans whilst the changed demographic I believe will make it difficult to bring in new fans in the area.
It is sad for those associated with the club and whilst I admire the passion of those fighting to revive the club I feel it's best left as a memory.

good call on the locks. ultimately I think we'll leave the door ajar for the youngsters you mentioned. Klemmer's situation is intriguing given he has a mutual option. personally I'd be taking it up and hoping Miller is ready by 2027 and that way we aren't looking for someone externally.

backrow is pretty interesting isn't it. Kepaoa playing for a contract, Bateman not getting any younger and Papali'i non commital. Galvin I think has made it pretty clear he only wants to be considered for the halves, but he may not have a choice once he bulks up. Samuela is also an interesting case. I heard he's been doing a lot of time in the middle thru preseason.

fair enough on hooker. in regards to OBs we definitely need at least one more with Tupou and now Nofoaluma gone. I think they'll probably assess the development of To'a, Naden, Feledy, Alaimalo, Laulili'i and Faataape before going to market, but I just hope the market doesn't dry out if things don't go to plan internally.

any off contract players you'd be looking at that've caught your eye?
No real outside backs that are off contract really excite me. Taylan May and Turuva are probably the pick of the bunch but can't see Penrith losing both. May seems like it would be more likely but he will probably end up at the Dogs with his brother.

I think it should be a wait and see approach. Hopefully at least one of To'a, Naden, Feledy, Alaimalo, Faataape or Saukuru establishes themselves this year. Other than that, our best bet would be waiting to see who is currently under contract and becomes available/squeezed out of their current club. Someone like an Addo-Carr, Xavier Savage or the like.

Simpkin leaving. Did i miss something @jrtiger ?
nothing confirmed or anything mate, just that I doubt we'll hold onto him beyond this year with Tallyn coming thru plus Ashton Large in a couple years. was just trying to see what people were thinking in terms of who or what we try to sign for 2025 and beyond.

He’s off contract. It’s a near certainty. The only way I could see him being retained is if something dramatic happens to TDS.

thing is as well is that there is a dearth of specialist hookers across the league. Simpkin certainly has his flaws but I do think a club will back themselves to get the best out of him and promise him regular first grade, something that I think he almost certainly will be getting less of as time goes on if he were to stay at WT.

He definitely has something to offer another club, I just don’t think it’s us. I’d be interested to see how he’d go in the Panthers system.

He still has a chance to prove himself. TDS still might have another year before he’s considered for selection as a regular first grader. And he’s off contract too. Time for him to step up.

Ivan's always liked him, he initially asked for Simpkin when we tried to get Laurie early in 2021 preseason.

Parramatta have had a sniff here and there. NQ might look at him due to Granville retiring. St George's hookers are hopeless. he'll find a contract for sure.
