Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

It wont happen overnight?

As i said this discussion has been done time and time again by everyone for the past 15 years

Thanks.for the patronising "it wont happen overnight" quip...thats reaĺy something thats news to someone born this year.

For some reason i get a bit snarky in september watching all the other teams year after year after year

I think the Tigers make the 8 next season.

Richo didn't say 'no more signings'. Just no more 'major' signings.

There really isn't too much in the way of 'major' signings left anyway.

Upgrade the quality of the KOE squad so that guys in that team are pushing the guys in the top squad. Competition will create performance.

Adding KPP strengthens the top squad. Geyer & Roberts adds depth to push the likes of Sukkar & Seyfarth & Charlie Murray etc.

For mine- we need to add body types & attitude. Taller guys, or faster guys, or angry hard men. Add some variety to the squad to change what we throw at the opposition. There's 1 or 2 top spots available & a few KOE spots free. Have to get the right guys filling spots & then develop the guys below them to push those guys.

Pressure creates diamonds.

It’s only been 15 years mate. We can’t wallow.

I went back and watched again to see exactly what he said ..

“The playing squad is now locked in virtually for the next two years.

We won’t be signing any …Don’t get excited fans waiting for the end of next year and we gunna sign…

We are locked in because we think the players we got can take us to the top of the NRL… if we’re wrong then Benji and I will be signing off into the sunset…”

Bizarre given both where and how we finished.
A strong middle or two is critical to progress

That depends on who you want to compare him to ?
If you can believe the recent contract figures that were published for Brisbane Broncos players, it listed players such as Deine Mariner and Jesse Arthurs being paid 150k less than Turuva and others such as Karapani and Shibasaki being paid more tha 250k less than Turuva.
Then factor in that we re-signed To’a for not much less than what we are paying Turuva.
Although I don’t agree, I can see a valid argument as to why some people might believe Turuva is a better player than the Broncos players I have named above, there cannot be a valid argument that To’a is better than any of them.
Why is this relevant?
We over rate and over pay too many of our players which then effects what we have left available in our salary cap spend.
half of them have been in and out of reserve grade and you don’t have any idea what we are paying to’a. turuva was recruited because we had no ability to get out of our own end, his yardage carries have been huge & he can finish tries. that literally what you want from a winger. shibisaki is on a T&T how it is even comparable 🤦🏻‍♀️

I haven’t listened to Richo’s interview yet, but I will.
Let’s be honest who is out there to sign for next year at the moment? There isn’t much high quality that I can think of, maybe nov1 more will be there but that’s for 2027. So who knows what can happen? We have a good handful of juniors coming through as mentioned, let’s hope they are what we need to plug the gaps.

I’m telling everyone Robert’s is a gun ! He will take Sukkar /Seyfarth spot in that 17 .
Assuming you have seen him play abit
What do you see as his position. when we signed him I thought it was second row but later on someone mentioned he could move into the middle.
I missed highlights reel if there was one

Shibisaki is a one in a thousand player that goes from T and T to Origin in one season …so comparing Turuva’s salary to his is a bit disingenuous… Perhaps instead Madge deserves a bit of credit for “unearthing “ him… Im pretty sure Shiba will be paid a lot more than Turuva next contract

I think another aspect that’s annoying outside of us missing the 8 for a 14th straight season, is our last coach is gearing up for a prelim. Meanwhile we have a rookie who basically has to make the 8 next year, or his coaching career is done.

A coach is only as good as the squad he has to work with and all coaches are impacted by things out of their control - injuries, player unrest, off field incidents lack of salary cap.
All the coaches that have come to this club have been behind the eight ball due to the perception and administration of the club even before they looked at the salary cap and the weaknesses in the squad..
Cleary and Maguire are examples of their potential to be successful at successfully run clubs - both who took up positions at organisations with great resources and great systems in place for long term success.
Nothing like the WTs.

Any coach in any sport needs the cattle ..but no coach I see survives consistent results that puts them at the foot of the table ..poor playing squad or not

Maguire is interesting though.. he went from premiership drought breaking coach at Souths to sacked in three years because they had a few seasons with a top ranked team that missed the finals and they essentially quit on him… The Broncos better get the title early with him… because his style doesn’t seem to be one built for longevity with the same playing group

I met Siro when I was a kid and he was in his prime, really good guy, like you said, took time to have a chat and he could tell I was star-struck.

Blocker too. My Dad's uncle was mentally handicapped, mad Balmain fan, hanging around the club and they were super nice to him, always made time to speak to him, give him a pat on the back.

That being said I've met a bunch of the more recent players and they were mostly really polite humble guys as well, you can tell they've had PR training, but some of them are real genuine humble guys like Stefano, Blore. I was actually super impressed with Billy Walters when he was at the club, really well spoken for a bloke who wasn't getting much first grade at the time.

I think really there's only the odd arsehole, or sometimes there are only so many randoms you can cop in one day.
I was really surprised at the time that Sirro was such a nice genuine bloke. Prior I’d only seen what the media portrayed and I was was under the impression that Sirro was one of the newer breed, the “Professional Footballer”, I guess that’s probably why I never forgot that he was a decent bloke. As opposed to Elias.
I went to a game (all 3 grades) with Poppy BF, we sat behind Loz the snoz Daley, he got there mid way through the reggies and was injured this day, he sat in the raiders player section till the end of the main game. Fair dinkum Laurie must’ve signed autographs the entire time he was there. By the time reggies was finished he had a line all the way up the steps, Poppy BF was popping and not in a good way he couldn’t see the ref. Then when Loz sat down for the main game the line started up again and it was longer. Security tried to move a line of 50+ humans, mostly unsupervised children, but every time they did, 5 mins later another line would appear.
Yeah there’s good and bad in every race, colour, culture and football team.

The coach might not survive at a club that has poor results but there is always so much more to that then coach - always the fall guy for the failure of others and their 'style" targeted.
The most successful clubs back their coach and move on their players - and they attract players to that system.
Some here were suggesting that Maguire would never get a professional coaching position again after his stint with us - after two successful rep stints now at arguably one the strongest clubs in the comp.
I remember Adam Reynolds name being bandied around that he would not come to Wests Tigers when Maguire was coach when we were looking for a 7 to compliment Brooks - seems more than content to play under Maguire at a successful club - maybe it had more to do with the club than the coach.
