Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

You miss the point.
Richo tried to keep them and lost. That is the worry with the current Bula negotiations. It’s got nothing to do with anything other than that.
I didn’t miss the point… I think it got to point where he decided it went as far as he wanted it to go and that was it.
Our actual offer to Galvin has never been released… it’s only speculation.
Stef, I think they would have liked to have kept but not at the price required to keep him from Melbourne.
Tallyn just wanted too much too early.

you can argue about richo losing them but it proved to be beneficial for the club so why even complain about it
If you follow the train of thought that is being discussed, the concern raised was the ability to negotiate with Moses and retain Bula.
Changing the goalposts is not a fair discussion point.

….and how will Bula be different?
Why are all these young guns who we publicly stated would be the foundation pieces of this club’s rebirth, so keen to get out of here?
We have a lot less problem attracting mature talent than keeping homegrown pathway products.

Just don't think it's about coming up through the juniors anymore or staying loyal.Young players happy to wear any jersey to get their start toward an NRL career. They know if they are good enough they will have options.
Richo is just as hamstrung by the clubs lack of success when negotiating especially when competing with other clubs who sell on the back of success.
Stef, Galvin, made a decision to leave the club and wouldnt have mattered who was doing the negotiating.
The Bula negs a bit different in the sense I think he is happy at the club but the money he is on - via contract value is reasonably questionable - and is favourable to the player. I hope they can work it out.

some1 asked about26 draw a few days ago . Details leaked . Draw due out next week - or its fake news
Released next Thursday likely.

I agree with this and it’s why I have been a vocal opponent to this joint being a development club and I was just as opposed to it being an aboriginal destination club and now a Polynesian destination club.
Trying to pigeonhole ourselves isn’t working. Employ proper recruitment techniques and hold proper trials and assessment criteria across the board.
Our talent scout focus seems too narrow.

lol well spun.
He wanted them and failed.
It’s amazing how much smoke gets blown up his fat arse…..

My take is it's somewhere in between. Richo wanted Galvin and Stef to re-sign that's certain but in both those cases they both rejected the club for reasons that have little to do with Richo and more to do with perception built by over a decade of cumulative incompetence. Yes Richo failed to persuade them in spite of that and in both of those cases wasn't even able to persuade them with the highest offer.

In other cases he has managed to do some good persuading. In the case of May even at a good price. I'd argue he has also had good value wins with the signing of Turuva, KPP (who was the best backrower on the open market) and the extension of Koroisau.

Of course Benji gets all the credit and rightly so for the players who want to stay, and Richo gets most of the blame for the losses. That's how it should be too if leadership is done right.

In Bula's case I think this will be more like the Stef scenario than the Galvin one. Richo is negotiating with a player he wants to keep but is not willing to pull his pants down. I think we will be his biggest suitor and I expect this time we will keep him. I also expect at least a share of the rhetoric to be cynical and question whether we overpaid but those questions are always fair if asked in good faith. They won't always be. Such is life.

If he can't keep Bula despite being the biggest suitor it will be a loss that is for sure. Though I also think it bares mentioning that while Bula and Galvin have Moses in common, Stefano's agent also was Papali'i's agent who left the club in unusually abrupt circumstances too. So I think in all cases the issue seems to be Richo (and possibly the club more generally) having issues with certain player agents. Personality clashes maybe? Maybe Richo plays hardball in ways some agents don't like?

When push comes to shove I feel like so far everyone has come out of the negotiations he has led better for it though. Galvin went to a club he seems happier at. His struggles became theirs and not ours. This opened the door for Latu which makes negotiations with Tartak and the Fainus easier. It also gave us the space to sign other players. Signing May got us both of them. TDS leaving is not the end of the world. Stefano was floundering here and the change of scenery has benefited him. Having him on monster coin at his level would have sucked.

While he doesn't always get plan a across the line I think he tends to have good back up plans from what I've seen so far. He is a proactive operator which is a breath of fresh air imo.

Well written thoughts. I actually agree with a lot of this.

Little bit too much nuance in that one Poopy

I think both sides of the Richo argument have good points. Don't forget to factor in value when talking about keeping or losing players though.

There was a point where Stefano & Galvin stopped being good value. They were not resigned. Previously, I don't think that would have been the case- we would have just about thrown anything at them to stay.

Bula will have a value too. I really like Bula. But you can't sink the salary cap into him at this point.

I'm sure there is a value, regardless of how much someone wants to stay/works with Moses/player expects that the club will draw a line at. I think THIS is where Richo has been very good for the club.
